Beschreibung: The catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of bigeye caught by the Japanese longline fishery in the Indian Ocean was standardized up to 1997 using general linear model (GLM) analysis. Standardized CPUE in the tropical area, which was relatively stable, ranged from 6 to 8 fish per 1,000 hooks in 1979-1987 and decreased continuously to about 4 in 1997. In contrast, CPUE in the southern area did not show the stable trend of the tropical areas, especially after 1990. This unstable CPUE pattern in the southern area in recent years seems to be derived mainly from the shift of targeting in longline operations. If the trend derived from analysis for 1952-1976 is included, current CPUE is estimated to be about 33 % of that in 1954.

Beschreibung: We develop an JAXA algorithm to retrieve aerosol optical properties using data of 355nm high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) with depolarization measurement function “ATLID” onboard EarthCARE satellite. Using the three channel data of the ATLID, the developed algorithm estimates (1) extinction coefficient, backscatter coefficient and depolarization ratio of particles (aerosols and clouds) without assuming a particle lidar ratio, (2) identifies molecule-rich, aerosol-rich, or cloud-rich slab layers, (3) classifies particle type (e.g., dust and maritime), (4) retrieve planetary boundary layer height, and (5) estimate extinction coefficients for several main aerosol components such as dust, sea-salt, carbonaceous, and water-soluble aerosols using difference in depolarization and light absorption properties of the aerosol components. Furthermore, we develop an aerosol retrieval algorithm using both the ATLID and multi-spectral imager “MSI”. This algorithm retrieves vertically mean mode-radii for dust and fine-mode aerosols as well as the extinction coefficients for the four aerosol components using the three channels of the ATLID and radiances at 670nm and 865nm of MSI. The optical properties of aerosols and their global distribution provided by the developed algorithms help clarify the radiative effects of aerosols. The EarthCARE algorithm described above was developed based on our developed algorithm for the CALIOP and MODIS measurements. In the presentation, the EarthCARE algorithm will be described, and as a demonstration, the global aerosol distribution retrieved from CALIOP-MODIS measurements and its radiative properties will be presented.

Beschreibung: Cloud radiative and microphysical properties, aerosols and vertical air motions will be observed by The Earth Clouds Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (JAXA/ESA) with a high-sensitivity W-band Doppler Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) and a 355 nm high spectral resolution Atmospheric Lidar (ATLID). Standard and research algorithms for cloud-precipitation have been developed to make the most of the new observation capabilities of the satellite that will be useful for understanding the interaction between cloud microphysics and in-cloud air motion. Overview of the active sensor-based algorithms prepared for the EarthCARE satellite mission, and applications of the methodologies to investigate the physical processes associated with clouds, precipitation and air-motion are discussed.

Beschreibung: We describe the JAXA algorithms and products from the Earth Clouds Aerosol and Radiation Explorer (EarthCARE). EarthCARE is a joint mission by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and the European Space Agency (ESA) to understand clouds, aerosols and radiation. It will carry Doppler cloud profiling radar (CPR), atmospheric high spectral resolution lidar (ATLID), multi-le spectral imager (MSI) and broad band radiometer (BBR) JAXA EarthCARE algorithms have been extended from the algorithms for CloudSat, CALIPSO and MODIS to produce Kyushu (KU) products and JAXA EarthCARE A-train products. Doppler capability of CPR is expected to provide terminal velocity of cloud/precipitation particles and vertical air motion inside clouds. High spectral resolution lidar ATLID provides true backscattering coefficient, extinction coefficient and depolarization ratio. Theoretical studies have indicated that the two-dimensional diagram of lidar ratio and depolarization ratio is essential not only for aerosol components but for retrieving cloud particle shapes and orientations (Okamoto et al., 2019, 2020). Recently developed physical model (Sato et al., 2018) and vectorized physical model (Sato et al., 2019) can be used to take lidar multiple scattering into account for the interpretation of active sensor signals of optically thick clouds. Synergy of new observations with the theoretical improvements enables better estimation of radiative characteristics of cloud/precipitation/aerosol particles. Synergetic ground-based observation systems have been developed to evaluate the EarthCARE algorithms. It consists of Multi-Field-of-view Multiple Scattering Polarization Lidar, high spectral resolution lidar, direct and coherent Doppler lidars and high-sensitivity-cloud radar.

Notizen: This article presents a method for investigating the diffusion of photocarriers in semiconductors by the analysis of phase shift between a temporally modulated illumination grating and its inducing photocurrent. Experiments on hydrogenated amorphous silicon prove that an accurate measurement of the diffusion length as well as an identification of ambipolar or nonambipolar diffusion can be acquired by using this technique.

Notizen: Photocurrent multiplication has been observed in a hydrogenated amorphous silicon-based p-i/a-SiN:H/i-n structure junction under a reverse biased condition. A systematic investigation on the photocurrent characteristics in this junction system has been carried out. It has been shown from the analysis of the results that multiplication arises from the interband tunneling injection of valence band "electron'' through the a-SiN:H barrier layer. A device modeling on the basis of the experimental data permits us to design the device structure for achieving better performances. As a preliminary optimization of device structure, an external quantum efficiency exceeding 70 has been obtained under the operation voltage 30 V in the heterojunction photodiode having an a-SiN:H (thickness of 40 nm with optical energy gap 2.1 eV) at the p a-SiC:H/i a-Si:H interface. The proposed highly sensitive photomultiplier device might have a wide variety of application fields such as a solid-state imager for high-definition televisions, etc.

Notizen: A design of a microspectrophotometric system using a synchrotron radiation (SR) source is described. The system covers a wide spectral range of 50–13000 cm−1, being under construction at the UVSOR BL6B beamline in the Institute for Molecular Science. Preliminary experiments in the mid-infrared region (500–5000 cm−1) have qualitatively confirmed the theoretical calculation that the synchrotron radiation is more intense than a blackbody (T=1200 K) when a microspectrophotomeric technique is applied, which is due to natural collimation and high brilliance of SR source. The SR as an infrared source exhibits its advantage on measuring the spectra of small single crystals especially in the far-infrared region.

Notizen: We have developed a longitudinal emittance monitor for a 7 MeV proton beam provided by the 433 MHz linac at the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University. In the present system, the beam first hits a thin gold target on the beam line, and a fraction of the scattered protons comes into a small cavity. After deflected by a rf electric field in the cavity, the protons finally reach a position sensitive detector (PSD). The PSD gives the information of the energy and position of the individual scattered proton, which enables us to reconstruct the longitudinal distribution of the beam before colliding with the target. The phase and energy resolution of the system are estimated to be 13° and 23 keV full width at half-maximum, respectively. The longitudinal rms emittance measured was 0.39±0.07 π deg MeV under the nominal operating condition of the linac. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notizen: A novel spectroscopy technique based on modulated photoconductivity measurements with varying illumination level has been applied to investigate the capture coefficients and the energy distribution of defect states in undoped amorphous silicon. From the experimental data, charged and neutral defect distributions are clearly resolved according to their own capture coefficients. The carrier capture process as well as the defect formation mechanism are both quantitatively discussed.

Notizen: The in-plane diffusion coefficient and lifetime of photogenerated carriers in amorphous silicon have been measured by the transient grating technique in amorphous silicon (a-Si)/silicon carbide (a-SiC) multilayered structures, as a function of the a-Si well layer thickness. As the layer thickness is decreased, the diffusion coefficient gradually decreases, while the lifetime drastically increases by more than one order of magnitude than that in thick unlayered a-Si. These behaviors suggest that the carrier transport is determined both by carrier interaction with shallow traps at a-Si/a-SiC interfaces and by quantum-size effect through weakened carrier coupling with deep states.
