Notes: Summary It was found that some ciliates,Stentor, Spirostomum andBlepharisma, which can contract rapidly like the stalks of Vorticellidae, have Ca2+-binding proteins that are very similar to spasmins, in the immunological sense. The presence of spasmins in other Protozoa and in some Metazoa was also investigated.

Notes: Abstract We briefly overview the radar observations that have been made for 30 years at Syowa Station, Antarctica for studying small-scale electron-density irregularities in the southern high-latitude E- and F-region ionosphere. Some observational results (i.e., long-term variations of radio aurora, Doppler spectra with narrow spectral widths and low Doppler velocities, and simultaneous observations of radar and optical auroras) from VHP radars capable of detecting 1.3- to 3-m scale irregularities are presented. A new 50-MHz radar system equipped with phased-antenna arrays began operation in February 1995 to observe two-dimensional behaviors of E-region irregularities. An HF radar experiment also began in February 1995 to explore decameter-scale E- and F-region irregularities in the auroral zone and polar cap. These two radars will contribute to a better understanding of the ionospheric irregularities and ionospheric physics at southern high latitudes.

Notes: Abstract An improved resonant fluorescence instrument for measuring atomic oxygen concentration was developed to avoid the Doppler effect and the aerodynamic shock effect due to the supersonic motion of a rocket. The shock effect is reduced by adopting a sharp wedge-shaped housing and by scanning of the detector field of view to change the distance between the scattering volume and the surface of the housing. The scanning enables us to determine absolute values of atomic oxygen concentration from relative variation of the scattered light signal due to the self-absorption. The instrument was calibrated in the laboratory, and the numerical simulation reproduced the calibration result. Using the instrument, the altitude profile of atomic oxygen concentration was observed by a rocket experiment at Uchinoura (31°N) on 28 January 1992. The data obtained from the rocket experiment were not perfectly free from the shock effect, but errors due to the effect were reduced by the data analysis procedure. The observed maximum concentration was 3.8× 1011 cm−3 at altitudes around 94 km. The systematic error is estimated to be less than ±0.7×1011 cm−3 and the relative random error is less than±0.07× 1011 cm−3at the same altitudes. The altitude profile of the OI 557.7-nm airglow was also observed in the same rocket experiment. The maximum volume emission rate was found to be 150 photons cm−3 s−1 at 94 km. The observed altitude profiles are compared with the MSIS model and other in situ observations.

Notes: Subgrain growth in deformed ferrite and incomplete recrystallisation during intercriticalannealing in low carbon (LC) steels was investigated by EBSD and FEGTEM/EDS. It wasconfirmed that fine dual phase (α+γ) microstructures could be obtained even without the addition ofmicroalloying elements such as Nb and Ti, if the steels were heated above Ac1 temperature beforethe completion of primary recrystallisation and then intercritically annealed. The fine microstructurewas found to be mainly due to the inhibition of primary recrystallisation, and also due to theinhibition of subgrain growth in deformed matrix by finely dispersed γ phase formed duringheating. Mn segregation at α/γ interfaces seems to indicate that the kinetics of boundary migrationin the existence of γ is controlled by the volume diffusion of substitutional alloying elements acrossthe α/γ interfaces

Notes: Summary Single crystals of MnIn2S4 were grown by the Bridgman method. By using theR-factor method, the inversion parameterx=0.08 and the deformation parameteru=0.382 are obtained. The fundamental absorption edge is positioned at 1.88 eV at room temperature and at 2.04 eV at liquid-He temperature. The electronic transition for the fundamental absorption edge is discussed in relation to α-MnS and preliminary band calculation by Kambara. Six vibrational modes were observed in the lattice vibration. Dispersion parameters are calculated by using the classical oscillator model. High electrical resistivity was obtained at room temperature.
