Description: Whether or not oocyte regeneration occurs in adult life has been the subject of much debate. In this study, we have traced germ-cell lineages over the life spans of three genetically modified mouse models and provide direct evidence that oogenesis does not originate from any germline stem cells (GSCs) in...

Description: We report on the epitaxial formation of type II In 0.5 Ga 0.5 Sb/InAs and InSb/InAs quantum dot ensembles using metal organic vapor phase epitaxy. Employing scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we determine spatial quantum dot dimensions smaller than the de Broglie wavelength of InGaSb, which strongly indicates a three dimensional hole confinement. Photoluminescence spectroscopy at low temperatures yields an enhanced radiative recombination in the mid-infrared regime at energies of 170–200 meV. This luminescence displays a strong excitation power dependence with a blueshift indicating a filling of excited quantum dot hole states. Furthermore, a rate equation model is used to extract the Auger recombination coefficient from the power dependent intensity at 77 K yielding values of 1.35 × 10 −28 cm 6 /s for In 0.5 Ga 0.5 Sb/InAs quantum dots and 1.47 × 10 −27 cm 6 /s for InSb/InAs quantum dots, which is about one order of magnitude lower as previously obtained values for InGaSb superlattices.

Description: Schizophrenia is a complex disorder, caused by both genetic and environmental factors and their interactions. Research on pathogenesis has traditionally focused on neurotransmitter systems in the brain, particularly those involving dopamine. Schizophrenia has been considered a separate disease for over a century, but in the absence of clear biological markers, diagnosis has historically been based on signs and symptoms. A fundamental message emerging from genome-wide association studies of copy number variations (CNVs) associated with the disease is that its genetic basis does not necessarily conform to classical nosological disease boundaries. Certain CNVs confer not only high relative risk of schizophrenia but also of other psychiatric disorders. The structural variations associated with schizophrenia can involve several genes and the phenotypic syndromes, or the 'genomic disorders', have not yet been characterized. Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP)-based genome-wide association studies with the potential to implicate individual genes in complex diseases may reveal underlying biological pathways. Here we combined SNP data from several large genome-wide scans and followed up the most significant association signals. We found significant association with several markers spanning the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) region on chromosome 6p21.3-22.1, a marker located upstream of the neurogranin gene (NRGN) on 11q24.2 and a marker in intron four of transcription factor 4 (TCF4) on 18q21.2. Our findings implicating the MHC region are consistent with an immune component to schizophrenia risk, whereas the association with NRGN and TCF4 points to perturbation of pathways involved in brain development, memory and cognition.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3077530/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3077530/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Stefansson, Hreinn -- Ophoff, Roel A -- Steinberg, Stacy -- Andreassen, Ole A -- Cichon, Sven -- Rujescu, Dan -- Werge, Thomas -- Pietilainen, Olli P H -- Mors, Ole -- Mortensen, Preben B -- Sigurdsson, Engilbert -- Gustafsson, Omar -- Nyegaard, Mette -- Tuulio-Henriksson, Annamari -- Ingason, Andres -- Hansen, Thomas -- Suvisaari, Jaana -- Lonnqvist, Jouko -- Paunio, Tiina -- Borglum, Anders D -- Hartmann, Annette -- Fink-Jensen, Anders -- Nordentoft, Merete -- Hougaard, David -- Norgaard-Pedersen, Bent -- Bottcher, Yvonne -- Olesen, Jes -- Breuer, Rene -- Moller, Hans-Jurgen -- Giegling, Ina -- Rasmussen, Henrik B -- Timm, Sally -- Mattheisen, Manuel -- Bitter, Istvan -- Rethelyi, Janos M -- Magnusdottir, Brynja B -- Sigmundsson, Thordur -- Olason, Pall -- Masson, Gisli -- Gulcher, Jeffrey R -- Haraldsson, Magnus -- Fossdal, Ragnheidur -- Thorgeirsson, Thorgeir E -- Thorsteinsdottir, Unnur -- Ruggeri, Mirella -- Tosato, Sarah -- Franke, Barbara -- Strengman, Eric -- Kiemeney, Lambertus A -- Genetic Risk and Outcome in Psychosis (GROUP) -- Melle, Ingrid -- Djurovic, Srdjan -- Abramova, Lilia -- Kaleda, Vasily -- Sanjuan, Julio -- de Frutos, Rosa -- Bramon, Elvira -- Vassos, Evangelos -- Fraser, Gillian -- Ettinger, Ulrich -- Picchioni, Marco -- Walker, Nicholas -- Toulopoulou, Timi -- Need, Anna C -- Ge, Dongliang -- Yoon, Joeng Lim -- Shianna, Kevin V -- Freimer, Nelson B -- Cantor, Rita M -- Murray, Robin -- Kong, Augustine -- Golimbet, Vera -- Carracedo, Angel -- Arango, Celso -- Costas, Javier -- Jonsson, Erik G -- Terenius, Lars -- Agartz, Ingrid -- Petursson, Hannes -- Nothen, Markus M -- Rietschel, Marcella -- Matthews, Paul M -- Muglia, Pierandrea -- Peltonen, Leena -- St Clair, David -- Goldstein, David B -- Stefansson, Kari -- Collier, David A -- 089061/Wellcome Trust/United Kingdom -- 1R01HL087679-01/HL/NHLBI NIH HHS/ -- PDA/02/06/016/Department of Health/United Kingdom -- R01 MH078075/MH/NIMH NIH HHS/ -- England -- Nature. 2009 Aug 6;460(7256):744-7. doi: 10.1038/nature08186. Description: Carbonaceous aerosols cause strong atmospheric heating and large surface cooling that is as important to South Asian climate forcing as greenhouse gases, yet the aerosol sources are poorly understood. Emission inventory models suggest that biofuel burning accounts for 50 to 90% of emissions, whereas the elemental composition of ambient aerosols points to fossil fuel combustion. We used radiocarbon measurements of winter monsoon aerosols from western India and the Indian Ocean to determine that biomass combustion produced two-thirds of the bulk carbonaceous aerosols, as well as one-half and two-thirds of two black carbon subfractions, respectively. These constraints show that both biomass combustion (such as residential cooking and agricultural burning) and fossil fuel combustion should be targeted to mitigate climate effects and improve air quality.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Gustafsson, Orjan -- Krusa, Martin -- Zencak, Zdenek -- Sheesley, Rebecca J -- Granat, Lennart -- Engstrom, Erik -- Praveen, P S -- Rao, P S P -- Leck, Caroline -- Rodhe, Henning -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2009 Jan 23;323(5913):495-8. doi: 10.1126/science.1164857.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Applied Environmental Science, Stockholm University, 10691 Stockholm, Sweden. orjan.gustafsson@itm.su.se〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19164746" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Both obesity and being underweight have been associated with increased mortality. Underweight, defined as a body mass index (BMI) 〈/= 18.5 kg per m(2) in adults and 〈/= -2 standard deviations from the mean in children, is the main sign of a series of heterogeneous clinical conditions including failure to thrive, feeding and eating disorder and/or anorexia nervosa. In contrast to obesity, few genetic variants underlying these clinical conditions have been reported. We previously showed that hemizygosity of a approximately 600-kilobase (kb) region on the short arm of chromosome 16 causes a highly penetrant form of obesity that is often associated with hyperphagia and intellectual disabilities. Here we show that the corresponding reciprocal duplication is associated with being underweight. We identified 138 duplication carriers (including 132 novel cases and 108 unrelated carriers) from individuals clinically referred for developmental or intellectual disabilities (DD/ID) or psychiatric disorders, or recruited from population-based cohorts. These carriers show significantly reduced postnatal weight and BMI. Half of the boys younger than five years are underweight with a probable diagnosis of failure to thrive, whereas adult duplication carriers have an 8.3-fold increased risk of being clinically underweight. We observe a trend towards increased severity in males, as well as a depletion of male carriers among non-medically ascertained cases. These features are associated with an unusually high frequency of selective and restrictive eating behaviours and a significant reduction in head circumference. Each of the observed phenotypes is the converse of one reported in carriers of deletions at this locus. The phenotypes correlate with changes in transcript levels for genes mapping within the duplication but not in flanking regions. The reciprocal impact of these 16p11.2 copy-number variants indicates that severe obesity and being underweight could have mirror aetiologies, possibly through contrasting effects on energy balance.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3637175/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3637175/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - Description: The future trajectory of greenhouse gas concentrations depends on interactions between climate and the biogeosphere. Thawing of Arctic permafrost could release significant amounts of carbon into the atmosphere in this century. Ancient Ice Complex deposits outcropping along the ~7,000-kilometre-long coastline of the East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS), and associated shallow subsea permafrost, are two large pools of permafrost carbon, yet their vulnerabilities towards thawing and decomposition are largely unknown. Recent Arctic warming is stronger than has been predicted by several degrees, and is particularly pronounced over the coastal ESAS region. There is thus a pressing need to improve our understanding of the links between permafrost carbon and climate in this relatively inaccessible region. Here we show that extensive release of carbon from these Ice Complex deposits dominates (57 +/- 2 per cent) the sedimentary carbon budget of the ESAS, the world's largest continental shelf, overwhelming the marine and topsoil terrestrial components. Inverse modelling of the dual-carbon isotope composition of organic carbon accumulating in ESAS surface sediments, using Monte Carlo simulations to account for uncertainties, suggests that 44 +/- 10 teragrams of old carbon is activated annually from Ice Complex permafrost, an order of magnitude more than has been suggested by previous studies. We estimate that about two-thirds (66 +/- 16 per cent) of this old carbon escapes to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide, with the remainder being re-buried in shelf sediments. Thermal collapse and erosion of these carbon-rich Pleistocene coastline and seafloor deposits may accelerate with Arctic amplification of climate warming.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Vonk, J E -- Sanchez-Garcia, L -- van Dongen, B E -- Alling, V -- Kosmach, D -- Charkin, A -- Semiletov, I P -- Dudarev, O V -- Shakhova, N -- Roos, P -- Eglinton, T I -- Andersson, A -- Gustafsson, O -- England -- Nature. 2012 Sep 6;489(7414):137-40. doi: 10.1038/nature11392.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Applied Environmental Science (ITM) and the Bert Bolin Centre for Climate Research, Stockholm University, SE-11418, Stockholm, Sweden.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22932271" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Remobilization to the atmosphere of only a small fraction of the methane held in East Siberian Arctic Shelf (ESAS) sediments could trigger abrupt climate warming, yet it is believed that sub-sea permafrost acts as a lid to keep this shallow methane reservoir in place. Here, we show that more than 5000 at-sea observations of dissolved methane demonstrates that greater than 80% of ESAS bottom waters and greater than 50% of surface waters are supersaturated with methane regarding to the atmosphere. The current atmospheric venting flux, which is composed of a diffusive component and a gradual ebullition component, is on par with previous estimates of methane venting from the entire World Ocean. Leakage of methane through shallow ESAS waters needs to be considered in interactions between the biogeosphere and a warming Arctic climate.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Shakhova, Natalia -- Semiletov, Igor -- Salyuk, Anatoly -- Yusupov, Vladimir -- Kosmach, Denis -- Gustafsson, Orjan -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2010 Mar 5;327(5970):1246-50. doi: 10.1126/science.1182221.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉International Arctic Research Centre, University of Alaska, Fairbanks, AK 99709, USA. nshakhov@iarc.uaf.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20203047" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
