    Notes: Abstract This paper examines those aspects of reflection seismology which require special consideration when imaging deeper hydrocarbon reservoirs, including the constraints imposed by vertical resolution, lateral resolution, and velocity analysis. We derive quantitative expressions relating the uncertainties in stacking velocities and in interval velocities derived from stacking velocities to acquisition parameters, as well as expressions for the lateral resolution which can theoretically be achieved for migrated seismic images. This analysis shows that the most significant limitations of seismic imaging at depth involve the finite lateral resolution of the seismic method, and the proper lateral positioning of seismic images. These difficulties are overcome in large measure through the proper migration of a seismic dataset, which becomes more critical as deeper horizons are imaged. If these horizons are suspected of having significant 3-D structure, a strong argument may be made for acquiring a 3-D seismic survey over the prospect. Migration of this dataset will then generate an image of the subsurface with good lateral resolution in both the X and Y directions.

    Notes: Abstract  The parasitic barnacles, Rhizocephala, are unique in Crustacea by having an entirely endo-parasitic phase inserted into their lifecycle. A cypris larva, remarkably similar to the cypris of conventional acorn and goose barnacles (Thoracica), settles on the crustacean host and develops an infective stage, the kentrogon, underneath the exuviae of the cypris. The kentrogon penetrates the integument of the host by a hollow cuticle structure, the stylet, and injects the parasitic material into the hemocoelic fluid of the host. Although advanced stages of the internal development have been found and described several times, the nature of the originally injected parasitic material has remained obscure for decades. Recently, however, it was shown that the parasitic material was injected by the kentrogon in the form of a motile, multi-cellular and vermiform body. The present study demonstrates that the vermiform stage is an instar which forms the only and direct link between the kentrogon and the maturing internal parasite. The vermiform instar, or vermigon, is at all times clothed in a cuticle, contains several types of cells, including epidermis and the anlage of the later ovary, and stays intact while growing into the internal parasites with rootlets.

    Notes: Abstract The one-dimensional theory of critical-length scales of phytoplankton patchiness is developed to include phytoplankton growth and herbivore grazing as functions of time and space. The critical-length scale L c for the pathch is then determined by the initial spatial distribution and concentration of the limiting nutrient and herbivores in addition to the daily averaged values of the growth and loss processes. The response of an initial phytoplankton patch to the stresses of turbulent diffusion, nutrient depletion, light periodicity, and nocturnal or continuous herbivore grazing is investigated numerically for several oceanic conditions. Nocturnal grazing, while less stressful on primary production than continous grazing, results in lower phytoplankton standing stocks. Increase in biomass of vertically migrating zooplankton results in a net loss of nutrient which might otherwise be egested, recycled, and utilized in the euphotic zone under continuous grazing conditions. The Ivlev constant is shown via sensitivity analysis to be a significant parameter ultimately influencing phytoplankton production. It is demonstrated numerically that diffusion of phytoplankton cells from areas of high concentration to low concentration prevents the local extinction of the standing stock, thereby rendering a positive herbivore grazing-threshold unnecessary for ecosystem stability.

    Notes: Spatially resolved concentrations of excited atomic hydrogen (n=2), generated from 13.56 MHz RF hydrocarbon discharges, are determined during film formation using intracavity laser spectroscopy. Self-bias voltages and pressures of methane (25 and 100 mTorr) and benzene (25 mTorr) are selected so that diamondlike carbon films are deposited. In all cases, the minimum concentration occurs at the power electrode. Benzene produces the least amount of excited atomic hydrogen overall. The results may have implications concerning the proposed impact induced fragmentation of hydrocarbon molecules during film growth.

    Notes: Absorption spectra of the BH2 radical and atomic B are detected by intracavity laser spectroscopy (ILS) in situ during the plasma dissociation of gaseous diborane (B2H6). Rovibronic absorption transitions of BH2 are observed near 15 469 cm−1 [(0,11,0)2B'1 –(0,0,0)2A(large-closed-square)1@B] and 13 605 cm−1 [(0,9,0)2B'1 –(0,0,0)2A(large-closed-square)1@B]. Absorption corresponding to the 3p (2P0)-5s (2S) transitions of atomic B are observed at 11 534.6 and 11 532.8 cm−1. Although atomic B has been detected previously under experimental conditions used in the plasma-assisted preparation of boron-containing films from B2H6, the ILS data presented here establish, for the first time, the presence of BH2 under chemical vapor deposition conditions.

    Notes: The complete OH vibrational distribution created by the reaction of O(1D2) with CH4 has been recorded directly, using low pressure infrared emission spectroscopy. The result shows that the energy is partitioned nonstatistically into this degree of freedom. The population of OH(v'=2) is approximately equal to or slightly greater than that of OH(v'=1) under the conditions of this experiment and substantial populations are recorded from all levels up to OH(v'=4), the maximum allowed by the exoergicity of the reaction.

    Notes: In order to quantify and characterize the variance in rainforest tree physiology, whole tree sap flow responses to local environmental conditions were investigated in 10 species of trees with diverse traits at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica. A simple model was developed to predict tree sap flow responses to a synthetic environmental variable generated by a principle components analysis. The best fit was obtained with a sigmoid function which explained between 74 and 93% of the variation in sap flux of individual trees. Sap flow reached an asymptote where higher light and evaporative demand did not cause sap flux to increase further. Soil moisture had little influence on sap flux. The morphological characteristics of the trees significantly affected sap flow; taller trees responded to changes in environmental variables sooner than shorter trees and high liana cover buffered tree sap flow responses to weather. The effect of species-specific differences on the model was small; the mean effectiveness of the model was reduced by 6% when parameters were estimated from a single pool of measurements taken from all individuals. The results indicate that sap flow response could be effectively estimated using a simple general model and composite environmental index for these 10 diverse tree species.

Das von Cornu verwendete Verhältnis zwischen der mittleren Abweichung und der Streuung ist stark negativ mit dem Exzeßkoeffizienten korreliert.
    Abstract: Résumé On démontre ici que le test de Cornu et celui du coefficient d'obliquité est préférable à tout autre lorsqu'il s'agit d'examiner si de petits échantillons de moins de 100 observations proviennent d'une répartition normale. Le rapport utilisé par Cornu entre l'écart moyen et l'écart quadratique moyen est corélé d'une manière fortement négative avec le coefficient de l'excès.
    Notes: Summary The Cornu criterion and the coefficient of skewness test are shown to be preferable to other tests when testing the hypothesis that small samples, less than 100, have been obtained from a normal population. The Cornu ratio of mean deviation to standard deviation is highly negatively correlated with the coefficient of kurtosis.

    Notes: Summary The interannual variability of the monthly mean upper layer thickness for the central Arabian Sea (5°N-15° N and 60° E-70° E) from a numerical model of the Indian Ocean during the period 1954–1976 is investigated in relation to Indian monsoon rainfall variability. The variability in the surface structure of the Somali Current in the western Arabian Sea is also briefly discussed. It is found that these fields show a great deal of interannual variability that is correlated with variability in Indian monsoon rainfall. Model upper layer thickness (H) is taken as a surrogate variable for thermocline depth, which is assumed to be correlated with sea surface temperature. In general, during the period 1967 to 1974, which is a period of lower than normal monsoon rainfall, the upper ocean warm water sphere is thicker (deeper thermocline which implies warmer surface water); in contrast, during the period 1954–1966, which is a period of higher than normal monsoon rainfall, the upper warm water sphere is thinner (shallower thermocline which implies cooler surface water). The filtered time series of uppper layer thickness indieates the presence of a quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO) during the wet monsoon period, but this QBO signal is conspicuously absent during the dry monsoon period. Since model H primarily responds to wind stress curl, the interannual variability of the stress curl is investigated by means of an empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis. The first three EOF modes represent more than 72% of the curl variance. The spatial patterns for these modes exhibit many elements of central Arabian Sea climatology. Features observed include the annual variation in the intensity of the summer monsoon ridge in the Arabian Sea and the annual zonal oscillation of the ridge during pre- and post-monsoon seasons. The time coefficients for the first EOF amplitude indicate the presence of a QBO during the wet monsoon period only, as seen in the ocean upper layer thickness. The variability in the model upper layer thickness is a passive response to variability in the wind field, or more specifically to variability in the Findlater Jet. When the winds are stronger, they drive stronger currents in the ocean and have stronger curl fields associated with them, driving stronger Ekman pumping. They transport more moisture from the southern hemisphere toward the Indian subcontinent, and they also drive a greater evaporative heat flux beneath the Findlater Jet in the Arabian Sea. It has been suggested that variability in the heat content of the Arabian Sea drives variability in Indian monsoon rainfall. The results of this study suggest that the opposite is true, that the northern Arabian Sea responds passively to variability in the monsoon system.
