Notes: Abstract Elemental composition and excretion rates of ammonium-nitrogen of zooplankton, ranging over more than five orders of magnitude in body size, were measured in mid-winter in coastal waters west of the Antarctic Peninsula. Excretion rates were constant for the initial 12 h of incubation in the four species tested, and experimental stocking densities of up to 126 mg dry wt l-1 did not cause variability in the rate of ammonium production. Weight-specific excretion rates of freshly caught Euchaeta antarctica, Conchoecia sp., Thysanoessa macrura, Euphausia superba, and early stage copepodites of Metridia gerlachei were not significantly different from those reported in summer. However, adult copepods of M. gerlachei and Calanoides acutus appear to have reduced their nitrogen metabolism during winter. Turnover rates of body nitrogen increased with diminishing size, ranging from 〈0.5% body N d-1 for large E. superba to 〉7% body N d-1 for CII and CIII copepodites of M. gerlachei. Only the nitrogen turnover rates of C. acutus were sufficiently low as to suggest that it could survive the entire austral winter without feeding. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton were virtually absent in both the water column and the sea-ice. We conclude that carnivory is the dominant trophic mode of the pelagic zooplankton community in Antarctica during winter. Production of ammonium-nitrogen by the zooplankton community probably accounts for M10% of the total ammonium regenerated prior to the annual spring bloom.

Notes: Abstract In this article we present a framework that integrates three aspects of empirical discovery—the formation of taxonomies, the generation of qualitative laws, and the detection of numeric relations. We specify a control structure that integrates these component processes, embedding qualitative discovery within taxonomy formation, and embedding numeric discovery within both of these activities. We also describe the framework's basic representation and organization of knowledge, which combines elements from recent work in machine discovery and qualitative physics. In addition, we describe IDS, a running system that instantiates this framework, and report its behavior on problems from the history of science. Finally, we discuss some limitations of the system as revealed by experimental studies, and propose some directions for future research.

Notes: Abstract Thysanoessa macrura was found throughout Gerlache Strait, Antarctica, during four surveys carried out from 30 October to 23 November 1989, with the highest abundance being 332 individuals m−2 (0–290 m). Reproduction had begun just before the surveys took place, as indicated by the presence of females with attached spermatophores and of larvae. Thirteen-month old females were reproductive. Larvae in 9 depth strata between 0–290 m were dominated by calyptopis stages, and developed from calyptopis 1 to furcilia 1 during November. Larval abundance was not correlated to chlorophyll a concentration, which showed a consistent east-west gradient in Gerlache Strait with highest concentrations (〉30 mg chlorophyll a m−3) in bays of the Antarctic Peninsula. Survival of larvae appeared to not be affected by phytoplankton abundance. Older T. macrura showed strong diel vertical migration between the surface at night and depths to 120 m during mid-day. Larvae were consistently found in the chlorophyll a-rich upper 50 m during night (90%) and day (81%), while adults and juveniles were found in the upper 50m at night (83%), but only 16% remained there during the day.

Notes: Abstract Interactions of the predator Lineus viridis (O. F. Muller 1774) with infaunal polychaetes were investigated in the German Wadden Sea. L. viridis is the dominant heteronemertean in this intertidal area with a mean abundance of 14 individuals per square meter. Predator enclosure experiments in the field revealed that L. viridis preyed on predatory polychaetes. The preferred prey species was Nereis diversicolor; others were Anaitides maculata. Nephtys hombergii and Harmothoe sarsi. These results were supported by a series of feeding experiments in the laboratory. The rate of consumption was estimated by laboratory and field experiments. The feeding rate of Lineus viridis was estimated by laboratory enclosure experiments to 5.6 g ashfree dry weight (AFDW) per square meter annually.

Notes: Abstract The development of a rodent model for the study of Sarcocystisneurona encephalitis is described. Animal models have been developed for a number of protozoal parasites; however, no such model exists for S. neurona. The approach used in this study is similar to that employed for other closely related protozoal parasites such as Neosporacaninum and Toxoplasmagondii. A time course of infection was examined, and histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and parasite isolation were used to examine the pathogenesis and follow the infection from 1 to 6 weeks postinoculation. S.neurona was associated with the development of encephalitis in these mice, and the immune status determined the susceptibility of these mice to S. neurona-associated encephalitis.
