Notes: To create a new material with good biocompatibility and high mechanical strength forartificial organs, titanium (Ti) and segmented polyurethane (SPU) were bonded through3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (γ-MPS), and specify causes governing the bonding strengthof Ti/γ-MPS/SPU interface. The number of cross-links of SPU and the concentration of activehydroxyl groups on the surface oxide film of Ti were controlled by UV-irradaiton and hydrogenperoxide immersion. The number of cross-links of SPU was measured by differential scanningcalorimetry (DSC) and the concentration of the active hydroxyl groups was also determined using azinc-complex substitution technique. Consequently, Ti/γ-MPS/SPU shear bonding stress wasincreased with the increase of the number of cross-links of SPU. In addition, the increase ofcross-links in SPU also improved the Ti/γ-MPS/SPU shear bonding stress

Notes: The corrosion behavior of Zr-Ti and Zr-Hf alloys with various concentrations in properlydeaerated Hanks’ solution were investigated by electrochemical techniques. The effects of thethermal treatment with the purpose of homogenization of chemical composition on the pittingpotentials of the Zr-Ti alloys were also examined. The results indicated that sufficient addition of Tito Zr improved its corrosion resistance, especially in terms of the pitting potential and the passivecurrent density. On the other hand, addition of Hf totally lowered the corrosion resistance of the alloy. The thermal treatment improved the pitting corrosion property of Zr-Ti alloys, and Zr alloys withover 5mol% Ti showed much higher pitting potentials than that of pure Zr. The treatment alsoimproved the reproducibility of the measurement and narrowed the data scattering. This phenomenonwas discussed with the model of rapidly-cooled metallographic structure

Notes: Abstract Seed dormancy develops latein embryogenesis after a period of potential prematuregermination and has been associated with levels ofabscisic acid (ABA) in, and sensitivity to, ABA ofembryos. In wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)embryos, there are two peaks in levels of ABA duringdevelopment: the first occurs 25 days afterpollination (DAP) and the second from 35 to 40 DAP. The first peak of ABA appears to be associated withthe development of the embryo's sensitivity to ABAsince such sensitivity was altered in seeds on earsthat were incubated in a solution of ABA from 15 and20 DAP. In the embryos of Kitakei wheat, a line thatexhibits dormancy, the second peak, at around 35 DAP,was more prolonged in comparison to Chihoku, anon-dormant line. The results support the proposedinvolvement of ABA in the formation and maintenance ofseed dormancy during middle and late embryogenesis. When developing embryos were incubated in water, embryonic ABA leaked out from the embryos, inparticular between 30 and 40 DAP. Prematuregermination observed between 30 and 40 DAP might berelated to such leakage of ABA from embryos.
