Abstract The thermal decomposition mechanism of iron(III) hydroxide carbonate prepared through hydrolysis and oxidation of FeCO3 is studied under both static and dynamic conditions. It is established that the precursor is decomposed to α-Fe2O3 forming an intermediate phase, α-FeOOH. Up to 523 K the structural transformations proceed with limited cation diffusion which leads to the pseudomorphic formation of Fe2O3 with large specific area.
