Description / Table of Contents: Summary The conditions for the measurement of the intensity of the solar and sky radiation and the sunshine by the Department of Radiation at Uccle are given. A study of the radiation climate is presented. In connection with a determination of the sunshine, a comparison of observationnal results is made with that calculated from new formulas. The intensity of direct solar radiation and of total solar and sky radiation on a horizontal surface is known by a computation. The limitations of the classical formulas are given.

Notes: Abstract The vertical distribution of the methane concentration in the stratosphere is related to its dissociation by two simultaneous daytime reactions with excited oxygen atoms O(1D) and with OH radicals and depends on the stratospheric eddy diffusion coefficient. Dissociation of CH4 in the lower stratosphere leads to the production of CO molecules while in the upper stratosphere thepphotodissociation of CO2 molecules is an additional process to the CO production. In the upper stratosphere (40±10 km) there is an equilibrium between the formation and destruction processes of carbon monoxide which leads to a minimum of its mixing ratio. There is an increase of the CO mixing ratio in the troposphere and mesosphere compared with that of the stratosphere. The vertical distribution of the CO mixing ratio is closely related to the eddy diffusion coefficient in the whole stratosphere but the absolute values of the hydroxyl radical concentration also determine the values of the CO mixing ratio.

Notes: Abstract Three kinds of samples were used to form Co suicides by thermal annealing: firstly, a Co film of about 370 Å thick, evaporated on a (100) single crystal Si (Si c /Co); secondly, an evaporated boron-containing Si (Si e (B)) layer on the top of the first sample (Si c /Co/Si e (B)). The last sample is in the Co film of the first sample we deposited a Sie(B) layer (Si c /Co/Si e (B)/Co). A laterally uniform CoSi2 layer can be formed from the second and the third samples by annealing at 450 °C. In the first sample, the CoSi2 can be formed only at temperatures above 500 °C and the disilicide is laterally less uniform than in the second and third samples. The Schottky barrier heights of the three samples derived from the forward and reverse I–V characteristics show that the barrier height is 0.01–0.02eV higher in the uniform case than in the nonuniform case.

Notes: Abstract The annealing behaviour of the Cu/Mo/Au metallization system is investigated. Backscattering spectrometry reveals a rapid diffusion of Cu and Au across the Mo film and the formation of AuCu after annealing at 600°C for 30 min in vacuum, but only when no impurity is detected in the as-deposited polycrystalline Mo layer. The Au-Cu interaction is impeded when 5.5 at% of oxygen is introduced in the as-deposited Mo layer. The thin film microstructures are analyzed using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The thermal stability difference between the samples with a pure Mo layer and a contaminated Mo layer is discussed in terms of fast diffusion process inhibited by a grain boundary decoration with oxygen atoms.

Notes: 34 Si23N43 (b3) and Ti35Si13N52 (c3), are synthesized by reactively sputtering a Ti5Si3 or a Ti3Si target, respectively. The silicon-lean film (c3) has a columnar structure closely resembling that of TiN. As a diffusion barrier between a shallow Si n+p junction diode and a Cu overlayer, this material is effective up to 700 °C for 30 min annealing in vacuum, a performance similar to that for TiN. The silicon-rich (b3) film contains nanocrystals of TiN, randomly oriented and embedded in an amorphous matrix. A film of (b3) maintains the stability of the same diode structure up to 850 °C for 30 min in vacuum. This film (b3) is clearly superior to TiN or to (c3). Similar experiments performed with Al instead of Cu overlayers highlight the importance of the thermodynamic stability of a barrier layer and demonstrate convincingly that for stable barriers the microstructure is a parameter that directly determines the barrier performance.
