    Notes: Abstract The gut morphology is described for seven species of Thalassinidea; Callianassasubterranea (Montagu), Jaxea nocturna Nardo, Axius stirhynchus Leach, Calocaris macandreae Bell, Upogebia pusilla (Petagna), U. deltaura (Leach) and U. stellata (Montagu). Differences were observed in the structure of the dorsal and lateral teeth of the gastric mill. Callianassa subterranea and A. stirhynchus had simple robust dorsal teeth and proportionally larger lateral teeth with flexible spines. The three upogebiids had complex dorsal teeth that were highly ridged and proportionally smaller lateral teeth with inflexible spines. The dorsal and lateral teeth of J. nocturna were intermediate in form. The dorsal tooth of Calocaris macandreae, although relatively simple in design, possessed accessory projections, or “wings”, on either side of the main structure. The lateral teeth were proportionally quite large, but lacked ridges and spines. The epithelia surfaces of the digestive gland, midgut and posterior diverticulum were similar for all seven species. Differences were observed in the morphology of the hindgut. The hindgut lining was completely smooth for the three upogebiid species. The other thalassinidean species had four distinct rows of cuticular projections situated on top of the ridges formed by the longitudinal convolutions of the hindgut. The arrangement of these projections varied between species. A gut flora was observed for six of the seven species, the exception being C. macandreae. The differences observed in the structure of the gut are discussed in relation to feeding and thalassinidean phylogeny.

    Notes: A chemically defined medium is desirable for nutritional studies and is frequently necessary for biochemical investigations. Several defined media are available for use with tissue and cell cultures from dicotyledonous plants. A fully defined medium has now been developed for cell suspension cultures from sugarcane. Prior to this, the only medium successfully used for cell cultures of monocotyledonous plants was a modification of Straus' synthetic medium (used to grow cell suspensions of corn).Cell suspension cultures from sugarcane stalk parenchyma, originally established in complex media containing coconut milk or yeast extract, can be grown in this synthetic medium, which consists of inorganic salts, vitamins, sucrose, 2.4-dicliloropheuoxyacetic acid, and a mixture of 13 amino acids. The most important of the amino acids are arginine aspartic acid, and glutamic acid. This simplified medium wilt aid in the investigation of the unusual and important role of arginine in sugar-cane growth and metabolism.

    Notes: The growth of sugarcane cell cultures derived from parenchyma tissues of three different varieties of sugarcane showed a marked dependence on the presence of arginine when the cells were cultured in a synthetic liquid medium containing a mixture of amino acids. The cells appeared lo have access to n normal biosynthetic pathway of arginine biosynthesis but took up exogenously supplied arginine rapidly and efficiently. Arginine was not limiting for protein formation, nor were proteins with AN unusually high number of arginine residues evident. The low level of arginine effective in bringing about the growth response is suggestive of a regulatory function for this amino acid in sugarcane cells.

    Notes: Summary Sugarcane tissues subcultured for over 4 years had lost the capability to differentiate shoots. In freshly isolated tissues from 3 cultivars, we readily obtained shoot differentiation on Murashige-Skoog medium, but shoot differentiation was lost, apparently irreversibly, after more than one subculture on a modified White's medium. Tissue from a fourth cultivar produced only roots. The tissue cultures of all cultivars studied have the capability to form roots regardless of the length of time in culture; root formation was enhanced by treatment with dalapon (2,2-dichloropropionic acid).
