Optical Stark measurements were performed on the (1,0) C 3Δ–X 3Δ band system of titanium monosulfide, 48TiS, and the (0,0) C 1Σ+–X 1Σ+ band system of isovalent zirconium monosulfide, 90ZrS. The molecules were produced by ablating a metal rod in the presence of a CS2/argon supersonic expansion. The field-free spectrum for (1,0) C 3Δ1–X 3Δ1 and (1,0) C 3Δ2–X 3Δ2 sub-bands of 48TiS were analyzed and an improved set of fine structure parameters was determined. The permanent electric dipole moments, μ, for TiS were determined to be 5.75(10) D and 4.41(9) D for the X 3Δ1(v=0) and C 3Δ1(v=1) states, respectively, and for ZrS to be 3.86(6) D and 4.71(6) D for the X 1Σ+(v=0) and C 1Σ+(v=0) states, respectively. A comparison of the transition metal sulfides to their respective oxides is presented. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
