    Description: Height-length relationship in Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) showed an exponential trend and relation in the form, H=ALᴮ. Deviations of actual values from the mean values consequent to the increase in size were noticed. Height and length approximated in oysters of less than 3.5cm in height resulting in orbicular shape. In oyster of shell height 3.5cm to 8cm, increase in height is faster leading to an oval shape. Above 8cm in height, the oysters become further elongated. Height-length relation is non-linear with an index (B value) of 1.1156. A linear relationship also holds good as the B value is not very much different from unity (H=-2.5424+2.0036L).

    Description: Settlement pattern of Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) at five different habitats in and around Cochin Harbour is reported. The settlement pattern is found to be considerably influenced by the distribution of salinity at the various locations. Peak settlement occurred when salinity ranged between 22.4‰ to 33‰.

    Description: A study of the height-depth relation in the Indian backwater oyster Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) was carried out. The plot of height against depth showed an exponential trend and a relationship of the form H = ADB. Plot of height against depth also showed larger deviations in height for oysters with greater depth. Analysis showed that variations in height do not result in corresponding variations in depth, particularly in oysters with increased height.

    Description: Monthly variations in condition index and percentage edibility of the population of oysters, namely, Crassostrea madrasensis (Preston) is reported for males, females and indeterminates for the period October 1981 to September 1982. Condition index and percentage edibility showed more or less similar trend for the total population and also for males, females and indeterminates. The condition index and percentage edibility were maximum during October 1981 which declined progressively and reached the lowest in February-March, 1982. From April it showed steady increase and reached the maximum again in October 1982 and this coincided with the gonadal cycle in oysters.

    Notes: Abstract The fluctuations in biochemical constituents such as water, nitrogen, non-protein nitrogen, protein, lipid and glycogen in gonad, muscle and hepatopancreas have been followed in 3 decapod crustaceans, Uca annulipes (Latreille), Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus) and Metapenaeus affinis (Milne-Edwards). The water and ash content of the entire body show no systematic fluctuation in relation to the annual reproductive cycle. The water content of the ovary diminishes as it matures. In the ovary of these crustaceans, the lipid fluctuated greatly in relation to the reproductive cycle. The maturing ovary contains more lipid than an immature or spent ovary per unit tissue weight. The changes in the biochemical constituents in the testis are not so pronounced as in the ovary, since the testicular cycle is often drawn-out and almost continuous in these crustaceans. There is an inverse relationship between water content and lipid content of the hepatopancreas; the greater the fat content, the lesser the water content. The hepatopancreas in these crustaceans is apparently a storage organ and contains much lipid and glycogen. At the height of the breeding season, when gonad production is intense, there is an indication of the mobilisation of at least a part of the lipid from hepatopancreas to gonad.

    Notes: Abstract An extensive study was conducted on the settlement and seasonal succession of fouling bryozoans in and around Cochin Harbour during the period 1965 to 1966; it was the first study of its kind performed in Indian waters. A total of 14 species was recorded from localities which were ecologically dissimilar. A distinct succession of species, mainly of a seasonal character, was observed. Seasonal succession usually occurs in localities where seasons are well marked, and where different species of animals with short life spans settle during particular times of the year. The study has shown that a distinct seasonal succession of bryozoans occurs in this locality; out of the 14 species which appeared on the panels not one species settled throughout the year. This was due to seasonal differences in the ecological conditions which prevailed in the area investigated. The significant seasonal influences on the incidence of bryozoans led to a categorisation of the species into the following patterns (a) typical brackish-water forms not encountered in purely marine localities; (b) typical brackish-water forms which may occur in marine localities; (c) typical marine forms never found in localities where low salinity conditions prevail.

    Notes: Abstract Employing the gonad index method, the reproductive cycles of three decapod crustaceans, Uca annulipes (Latreille), Portunus pelagicus (Linnaeus) and Metapenaeus affinis (Milne-Edwards) have been studied. In these crustaceans breeding is not continuous all the year round, but extends over several months of the year with distinct peak periods of gonadal activity. The male and female reproductive cycles are not concurrent. The peak of the reproductive cycle of males occurs slightly earlier in the breeding season than that of females. These studies indicate the possibility of production of successive broods of eggs during the same breeding season. In these species, the low saline conditions of the monsoon period are unfavourable for breeding. The medium and high saline conditions during the post-monsoon and pre-monsoon months, respectively, with plenty of planktonic food for the larvae, seem to be the favourable periods for breeding activity.
