Notes: The title compound, (C3H5N2)4[β-Mo8O26], has been prepared from imidazole octamolybdate, (C3H5N2)4[(C3H4N2)2(γ-Mo8O26)], which was described previously. The γ→β conversion is produced in the presence of Cu(NO3)2·3H2O and is reported for the first time in this work. The X-ray structure analysis confirmed the presence of the [Mo8O26]4− anion. The structure consists of β-Mo8O26 polyanions and imidazolium cations. These cations are linked to the terminal and bridging O atoms of the anion by hydrogen bonds.

Description / Table of Contents: Sr3GdRhO6 - die erste RhIII-Verbindung vom K4CdCl6-Strukturtyp: Synthese, Kristallstruktur und magnetische EigenschaftenSr3GdRhO6 wurde dargestellt und mittels Rietveld Verfeinerung von Röntgen-Pulverdaten (Raumgruppe R3c; Z = 6; a = 9,7840(5) Å; c = 11,4196(7) Å) charakterisiert. Gadolinium.
Notes: The compound Sr3GdRhO6 has been synthesized and structurally characterized by Rietveld refinement of powder X-ray diffraction data. (space group R3c; Z = 6; a = 9.7840(5) Å; c = 11.4196(7) Å) This compound is isostructural with K4CdCl6. The structure consists of infinite one-dimensional chains of alternating face-shared RhO6 octahedra and GdO6 trigonal prisms. The strontium cations are located in a distorted square antiprismatic environment. Magnetic susceptibility data show that Sr3GdRhO6 obeys the Curie law with ηeff = 7.80 B.M., consistent with an oxidation state of +3 for both rhodium and gadolinium.

Description: A tool for predicting the occurrence of Ground Level Enhancement (GLE) events using the UMASEP scheme [Núñez, 2011, 2015] is presented. This real-time tool, called HESPERIA UMASEP-500, is based on the detection of the magnetic connection, along which protons arrive in the near-Earth environment, by estimating the lag-correlation between the time derivatives of 1-minute soft X-ray flux (SXR) and 1-minute near-Earth proton fluxes observed by the GOES satellites. Unlike current GLE warning systems, this tool can predict GLE events before the detection by any neutron monitor (NM) station. The prediction performance measured for the period from 1986 to 2016 is presented for two consecutive periods, because of their notable difference in performance. For the 2000-2016 period, this prediction tool obtained a probability of detection (POD) of 53.8% (7 of 13 GLE events), a false alarm ratio (FAR) of 30.0%, and average warning times (AWT) of 8 min with respect to the first NM station's alert and 15 min to the GLE Alert Plus's warning. We have tested the model by replacing the GOES proton data with SOHO/EPHIN proton data, and the results are similar in terms of POD, FAR and AWT for the same period. The paper also presents a comparison with a GLE warning system. This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under agreement No 637324.

Description: Entropy, Vol. 19, Pages 639: Magnetic Engine for the Single-Particle Landau Problem Entropy doi: 10.3390/e19120639 Authors: Francisco Peña Alejandro González Alvaro Nunez Pedro Orellana René Rojas Patricio Vargas We study the effect of the degeneracy factor in the energy levels of the well-known Landau problem for a magnetic engine. The scheme of the cycle is composed of two adiabatic processes and two isomagnetic processes, driven by a quasi-static modulation of external magnetic field intensity. We derive the analytical expression of the relation between the magnetic field and temperature along the adiabatic process and, in particular, reproduce the expression for the efficiency as a function of the compression ratio.

Description: We studied the performance of classical and quantum magnetic Otto cycle with a working substance composed of a single quantum dot using the Fock–Darwin model with the inclusion of the Zeeman interaction. Modulating an external/perpendicular magnetic field, in the classical approach, we found an oscillating behavior in the total work extracted that was not present in the quantum formulation. We found that, in the classical approach, the engine yielded a greater performance in terms of total work extracted and efficiency than when compared with the quantum approach. This is because, in the classical case, the working substance can be in thermal equilibrium at each point of the cycle, which maximizes the energy extracted in the adiabatic strokes.
