Notes: This paper presents new trends in parallel methods used to solve finite element matrix systems: standard iterative and direct solving methods first, and then domain decomposition methods. For example, the current status and properties of two prevailing programming environments (PVM and MPI) are finally given and compared when implemented together with a finite element time domain formulation.

Notes: Purpose - Propose post processing methods for the edge finite element (FE) method on a tetrahedral mesh. They make it possible to deduce vector values on the vertices from scalar values defined on the edges of the tetrahedra. Design/methodology/approach - The new proposed techniques are based on a least squares formulation leading to a sparse matrix system to be solved. They are compared in terms of accuracy and CPU time on a FEs formulation for open boundary - frequency domain problems. Findings - A significant improvement of vector values accuracy on the vertices of the tetrahedra is obtained compared to a classical approach with a very small additional computation time. Originality/value - This work presents techniques: to obtain the values at the initial nodes of the mesh and not inside the tetrahedra; and to take into account the discontinuity to the interface between two media of different electromagnetic properties.

Notes: The purpose of this article is to delineate new convergent similarities and future possible differences between legal systems, using pre-contractual liability and good faith as a focal point of investigation. The first part of the article tries to reframe the ordinary picture of Good Faith in European contract law. Western legal systems differ as to the scope of the good faith principle. In the Civil Law system, the minimalist view is represented by the French courts, who have not relied on the bonne foi to the same extent that their German and Italian counterparts did. An even more minimalist approach is represented by the common law of England does not recognize any general obligation of the parties to a contract to conform to the standard of good faith. The second part of the article focuses the prism of the good faith investigation by concentrating on the pre-contractual duty to inform and by trying to map reciprocal influences, and differences between Europe and United States. The way authors in America and Europe are looking to those issues offer ground to the thesis that European Academia, too keen on the normative analysis, is loosing ground in favor of the, more Law and .. oriented, American Academia.

Notes: Summary The authors have explanted elastic arteries (innominate) and muscular arteries (carotid) from chick embryos. The arteries have been kept from 1–8 days in vitro. Results: (a) the elastic arteries have a medium ability of survival, they never showed degeneration but only loss of differentiation; (b) the muscular arteries have a lesser ability of survival in vitro. They showed loss of differentiation, degeneration and necrosis; (c) the muscular arteries react easily to mechanical stimulation and the lumen may be divided by endothelial cells; (d) when the innominate artery is explanted with the carotid a better survival of the innominate artery is obtained. The innominate artery has a trophic action upon the carotid, in vitro.

Notes: Summary The authors study the number of mastocytes and the percentage of degranulated types in rats treated with potassium perchlorate. This product has an antithyroid activity. An increase in absolute number of mastocytes in the thyroid gland of treated animals is shown. There is also an increase of degranulated types of these cells. In the other organs (skin, liver, lungs) a decrease in absolute number of mastocytes is observed with a concomitant increase of degranulated types. The results are discussed according to the literature.

Notes: Summary The authors studied the arteries of the heart of chick embryos (aorta, anonyma and pulmonary arteries). They describe: (a) the morphogenesis of these arteries; (b) the ability of these arteries to survive and to differentiate when cultivated in vitro; (c) the way the arteries reacted to the presence of a foreign body in the lumen.

Notes: Summary During artificial incubation the chick embryos show a 30% mortality with the above mentioned material (incubator and breed of chicken). The 2 critical periods for the embryos are the first 5 days of incubation and the 2 days of hatching. In the same experience, the author found 4% of malformed embryos. All the values are calculated on the total of 503 fertile eggs. The author believes that the above mentioned figure represents a standard curve for a definite material.

Notes: Summary The authors describe a new method of block staining for semifine sections with various metal salts (ferriammonium-sulphate, osmium tetroxyde, uranyl acetate, chromeosmium) and hematoxylin. They investigated the specificity of iron-alaun-hematoxylin with several extractions and blocking methods. According to their observations the dissociated iron is bounded to the negatively charged tissular groups. The nature of binding is thought to be electrostatic and coordinativ (complex). The last one is probably predominant in nucleic acids containing structures. This method seems to be encouraging for electron-histochemical investigations.

Notes: Summary Various iron salts solutions have been used to contrast blocks of renal tissue prior to their dehydration and embedment. Pure ferric ammonio-sulphate solutions give a strong contrast of the nuclear chromatin, of the mitochondria and of the basement membranes, but the electron microscopical appearance of the tissue is bad, because of the acidity of the solution. At higher pH, obtained in mixtures of ferric ammonio-sulphate and potassium sodium tartrate, the preservation is improved, the contrast of the chromatin, of the mitochondria and of the membranes decreases from a pH of 4.5. On the contrary, the cytoplasmic “matrix” becomes more electron-opaque and takes a granular appearance. The advantages of the block-staining are discussed. Specimens contrasted by this method can be observed in the light microscope, after addition of haematoxylin to the dehydrating ethanol series. In that case, there is a complete similarity between the light-stained and the electron-contrasted areas. Moreover, the understanding of the contrast is easier after block-staining: in the case of iron, the metal is complexed by the phosphate and the sulphate radicals of the tissue, with a contrasting solution at a pH value up to 4.5. For higher pH values, the iron-tartrate complex ions play an important role, possibly even in the cationic sites of the tissue. They can thus be considered as anionic metallic contrasting agents.
