Notes: Abstract Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired haemolytic disorder caused by the absence of glycosyl phosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored surface proteins resulting from a defect in one step of GPI-anchor biosynthesis. Recent analysis has shown that mutations at the PIG-A (phosphatidylinositoglycan-class A) gene are responsible for GPI-anchor deficiency in all PNH patients. In the current study, we describe three new mutations of the PIG-A gene in Italian patients with PNH. The analysis has been performed by RNA/single-strand conformation polymorphism using genomic DNA purified from nucleated peripheral blood cells. An abnormal pattern of migration of polymerase chain reaction amplified fragments containing exons 2 and 5 was observed. Sequencing analysis led to the identification of three mutations: a transversion C-to-A creating a stop codon (Y98X), an A insertion at position 460 (460insA), and a C deletion (1114delC). All the mutations cause a premature termination of the translation of the PIG-A protein.

Notes: A number of different approaches were used to enhance the toughness of tri- and tetrafunctional epoxies and of unsaturated polyester resins. In the case of epoxies, tough, thermally stable, engineering thermoplastics, namely a bisphenol-A polycarbonate and a thermoplastic poly(ether imide) (Ultem 1000) were employed as modifiers. For unsaturated polyesters a different approach was adopted: two commercial liquid rubbers were chemically modified to enhance their reactivity towards the matrix functionalities. In particular, a hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene and an aminoterminated butadiene-acrylonitrile copolymer were transformed into isocyanate-terminated and maleimide-terminated rubbers, respectively. A further system which is described in the present contribution is aimed at mitigating another deficiency of the polyester matrix, namely its rapidly decreasing rigidity at temperatures above room temperature. In this case, a thermosetting bismaleimide was incorporated into the resin as a co-reactive second component.

Notes: The yielding and the fracture behaviour of an intercrosslinked polymer network obtained by the simultaneous curing of an unsaturated polyester (UP) and a thermosetting bismaleimide resin (BMI) was investigated in a wide range of temperatures and testing rates. The yield stress σy and the Young's modulus E increase by increasing the testing rate and decreasing temperature. Moreover, under the same testing conditions, σy and E increased as the BMI content in the blend was enhanced. On the other hand, it was found that the fracture parameter Kc was not affected by the presence of BMI. The yielding process was analyzed using the theories both of Argon and Bowden and the molecular parameters derived there were related to the molecular structure of the network developed upon curing.

Notes: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra of syndiotactic polystyrene (s-PS) semicrystalline samples have been examined by using the spectral subtraction approach. For the crystalline forms including trans-planar chains (trigonal α and orthorhombic β) a number of conformational and structural order effects, not previously described in the literature, have been identified. A method based on the results of the spectral subtraction analysis has been developed for the determination of the crystallinity degree and compared with the standard method based on the wide-angle X-ray diffraction patterns. The spectral subtraction analysis on FTIR spectra allows also an easy evaluation of the amount of α and β crystalline phases (often simultaneously present in melt-crystallized samples) although both contain chains in a same conformation. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: The effect of the dicumylperoxide (DCPO) concentration on the kinetics of the bulk functionalization of an ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPR) has been studied. It has been found that, enhancing the DCPO initial concentration in the reaction mixture, results in both increased initial reaction rate and grafting process efficiency. DCPO content also affects degradation, which always accompanies the grafting reaction. At high DCPO content, products with a high degree of grafting and intrinsic viscosity close to that of the parent copolymer can be obtained. Furthermore, the influence of the EPR composition and chain microstructure on the functionalization as well as on the degradation processes has been investigated. By increasing the C2 content in EPRs prepared by using vanadium-based conventional catalysts, obtains faster functionalization kinetics and a less pronounced degradation of the products. At fixed experimental conditions, the highest grafting degrees have been obtained by using EPRs prepared by high-yield titanium catalysts and characterized as a block-like microstructure. The experimental results have been interpreted on the basis of a proposed reaction mechanism.

Notes: An ethylene-propylene copolymer (EPR) has been functionalized with dibutyl maleate (DBM) by means of a radical-initiated bulk process. Different degrees of grafting have been obtained by varying the overall composition of the reaction mixture as well as the processing procedures. The influence of the grafting degree on the structural and superreticular (or “long range”) order has been investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared analysis (FTIR), and wide (WAXS) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. The functionalization leads to a decrease of the “residual crystallinity” present in the parent copolymer. Linear relationships between the grafting degree and the crystallinity degree Xc evaluated by both DSC and WAXS have been obtained. The results of the structural investigations, in agreement with previously reported ones, suggest that the grafting preferentially occurs onto the longer or more perfect methylene sequences. SAXS investigations showed that the significant degree of structuration, i.e., crystalline and paracrystalline order, present in the parent elastomer, gradually disappears by increasing the degree of grafting.

Notes: Infrared spectra of syndiotactic polystyrene exhibiting various crystalline forms and modifications, and in the amorphous state, are reported in this contribution. In addition to strong conformational effects, the spectra demonstrate striking effects of chain packing. Several infrared spectral differences also exist between the two crystalline forms which present a trans-planer conformation of the chains. Spectral changes are also reported for solution-crystallized samples, which depend on the solvent present in the clathrate compound formed with the polymers.
