    Notes: Abstract. Among the multiplicity of roles suggested for proteins of the annexin family, those implicating these proteins in regulated exocytosis remain among the most convincing. Studies in this area of annexin biology have focused on annexin II, which because of its unusually low Ca2+-requirement for phospholipid-binding has many of the requisite properties of a membrane fusogenic Ca2+ sensor. Other annexins are also good candidates for exocytotic mediators, especially annexins I and VII, which have strong vesicle-aggregating activities. In contrast, annexin VI appears to block vesicle aggregation, perhaps acting as a negative regulator of exocytosis. In this review, we consider the evidence for and against annexins having functions in the secretory pathway.

    Notes: Abstract The use of nucleic acids to estimate crustacean growth is not well documented, and may be complicated by biochemical changes associated with their molt cycle. The objectives of this study were to assess the effects of molt stage on nucleic acid concentrations in abdominal muscle tissue of juvenile white shrimp,Penaeus vannamei, and to examine the relationship between nucleic acid concentrations and growth rates of shrimp exposed to different feeding regimes throughout a 12 d feeding experiment. RNA and DNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were not significantly different among the five major molt stages early postmolt, late postmolt, intermolt, early premolt, and late premolt. In the feeding experiment, RNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios accounted for 〉70% of the variation in shrimp growth on three different sampling days. In addition, RNA concentrations and RNA:DNA ratios were used successfully to discriminate between unfed, moderately-fed, and well-fed shrimp. These variables exhibited significant treatment differences in 〈24 h after the initiation of the different feeding regimes, whereas significant changes in whole-body weight took longer to detect. Rapid detection of significant treatment effects can be useful in ecological studes, especially those concerned with food-web interactions.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) on the standard (SMR) and routine (RMR) metabolic rates of Raja erinacea was estimated from oxygen-consumption measurements. Data were gathered from a computerized, flow-through respirometry system. Individual trials were run for 96 h at 10 °C on anesthetized and untreated fish. The resulting rates, SMR = 20.1 ± 1.99 SE and RMR = 48.3± 2.5 SE mg O2 kg−1 h−1, for an unanesthetized skate of 0.5 kg standardized weight, are the lowest reported for any elasmobranch. Periodogram analysis revealed a significant light-response component to the oxygen consumption of these fish, indicating a pattern of nocturnal and crepuscular activity. This activity pattern was disrupted in skates subjected to anesthesia. The use of low-dosage MS-222 in conjunction with the respirometry trials provides positive preliminary evidence that this technique may be useful in giving quick, accurate estimates of SMR in the more intractable elasmobranch fishes.

    Notes: Abstract Ascospore appendages of 18 marine Ascomycetes, belonging to the genera Amylocarpus, Carbosphaerella, Corollospora, Eiona, Emericellopsis, Haligena, Halosphaeria, Lulworthia, Remispora and Torpedospora, were examined with the scanning electron microscope. A number of basic types of spore appendage development are recognised. The significance of these observations to the taxonomy of marine Ascomycetes, and especially the Halosphaeriaceae, is discussed. Remispora is considered a valid genus and not a synonym of Halosphaeria. Both Corollospora and Halosphaeria are considered to be an assemblage of disparate species. The establishment of new genera is considered premature until material of other species has been re-examined. The ontogeny and structure of spore appendages are considered useful taxonomic criteria at the specific and generic level.

    Notes: Abstract Slow reduction of dissolved oxygen concentrations or slowly increased carbon dioxide (reduced pH) did not cause measurable changes in the density, nearest neighbor orientation, or the swimming speed of experimental schools of the northern anchovy Engraulis mordax, until near-lethal levels were reached. Rapid reductions of oxygen or pH, however, caused significant increases in average swimming velocity. Positive reactions were correlated to rapid reductions of no more than 0.55 mg O2/l or 0.25 pH units. These responses are related to the hypothesis that metabolic reductions of environmental dissolved oxygen and/or pH may influence the internal structure and behavior of fish schools.

    Notes: We have used static and dynamic light scattering to study the dynamics of aggregation of synthetic melanin, an amorphous biopolymeric substance, in low pH aqueous solution. We have found that, depending on the final pH value of the solutions, there existed two regimes of the aggregation kinetics, one corresponding to diffusion limited aggregation (DLA), and the other corresponding to reaction limited aggregation (RLA). The precipitates formed in these two regimes can be characterized by fractal structures. We have found fractal dimensions of df =1.8 for the DLA clusters and df =2.2 for the RLA clusters. These results agree well with the proposed limits of the fractal dimensions of the gold aggregates formed in aqueous solutions by Weitz et al.

    Notes: A detailed X-ray study of HOPG reveals extensive wings on the 00.l Bragg reflections whose width in a scan normal to 00.l is comparable to the mosaic spread. These wings, which are absent in single-crystal profiles, are attributed to rotational or twist (T) defects between perfect substacks of pyrolyzed graphite. Along 11.l, the twists destroy coherence and produce an effective 'particle-size' broadening. The average substack size, or spacing between T defects, is estimated through profile fitting to be about 110 Å. The lateral extent of T defects is comparable to a mosaic-block size.

    Notes: X-ray scattering measurements have been made in situ on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite intercalated with FeCl3 to stage 4 in a sealed glass tube at 620 K. It has been found that the FeCl3 is in a two-dimensional liquid state at this temperature and that the stacking of the sets of ordered graphite layers (ABAB) that bound the intercalant is nearly random. Through a novel modeling of L scans for 10.L, 11.L, 20.L, 21.L, 30.L and 22.L, a good fit has been achieved by using 60% of a preferred (A-A) stacking of sets with a broad lateral distribution about the ordered position. The remaining 40% of the sets are stacked with complete translational randomness, without regard to the normal graphite crystallography. This sliding randomness remains compatible with Daumas-Herold domain formation.

    Notes: X-ray results are presented on the crystallographic parameters in the basal (ab) plane and the short-range-order diffuse scattering from intercalated silver atoms in disordered stage-2 Ag0.18TiS2 at room temperature. The silver atoms in the intercalated plane occupy the octahedral sites and the in-plane temperature parameter of the silver atoms has a value of B = 3.0 ± 0.1 Å2, suggesting both weak bonding and correspondingly rapid diffusion. Rodlike diffuse scattering parallel to c* at .0, .0 and their equivalent positions is observed and reveals the two-dimensional (2D) feature of the disordered state. From analyzing this 2D diffuse intensity by the method of Borie & Sparks [Acta Cryst. (1971), A27, 198-201], the planar short-range-order parameters were determined. A comparison of this planar short-range order with the 2D Ornstein-Zernike correlation function demonstrates the long-range nature of the 2D short-range order with a correlation range κ-1 of 4.88 ± 0.4 Å. Using a linearized mean-field approximation for the correlation functions of a binary Ising system well above Tc developed by Clapp & Moss [Phys. Rev. (1966), 142, 418-427], a set of oscillatory atomic-pair interaction potential ratios was obtained where the direct interactions were significant out to at least four to five neighbors.
