Summary The degree of luminosity of the following pigmented (Ostwald) papers; orange, yellow, green and blue, has been determined for certain Rhopalocera by means of the optomotor reaction. The comparison of numerous species of butterflies has yielded the following results: where as the luminosity values for yellow, red and blue vary independently of each other, those for green and blue, as well as for orange and red, always vary in the same direction. Therefore it seems possible, that three groups of colours: yellow, green-blue, orange-red, are perceived by different perceptors. In each family the order of the degree of brightness of the tested pigment colours is constant.
