    Notes: Abstract The quantification of stochastic substructures seen propagating away from the centers of emission lines of Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars is extended using the powerful, objective technique of wavelet analysis. Results for the substructures in one WR star so far show that the scaling laws between (a) flux and velocity dispersion and (b) lifetime and flux, combined with (c) their mass spectrum, strongly support the hypothesis that we are seeing the high mass tail-end distribution of full-scale supersonic compressible turbulence in the winds. This turbulence sets in beyond a critical radius from the star and shows remarkable similarity to the hierarchy of cloudlets seen in giant molecular clouds and other components of the ISM. The velocity dispersion is larger on average for substructures (interpreted as density enhanced turbulent eddies) propagating towards or away from the observer, suggesting that the turbulence is anisotropic. This is not surprising, since the most likely force which drives the windand the ensuing turbulence alike, radiation pressure, is directed outwards in all directions from the star. It is likely that a similar kind of turbulence prevails in the winds of all hot stars, of which those of WR stars are the most extreme. The consequences of clumping in winds are numerous. One of the most important is the necessary reduction in the estimate of the mass-loss rates compared to smooth outflow models.

    Notes: Summary The development of a computer-aided rapid-scanning detector for HPLC based on the linear photodiode array UV-visible spectrophotometer is described. Chomatograms monitored at up to three wavelengths, with automatic capture of spectra for eluted peaks and post-run processing of spectral data to generate log10 (A) spectra, second derivative and fourth derivative spectra, are described. Methods are reported for the analysis of forensic samples of diacetylmorphine (heroin) in the presence of the degradation products and potential contaminants caffeine, papaverine, 6-acetylcodeine, thebaine, 6-acetyl-morphine, procaine and morphine separated by HPLC. The novel use of second and higher derivative spectra for the qualitative characterisation of drugs and contaminants separated by HPLC is described.

    Notes: Abstract The physical and chemical processes operating in the River Tamar Estuary (south-west England) have been comprehensively described and reported in the literature. There are well-established gradients of salinity, suspended sediment and oxygen which vary both on short-term (tidal) and long-term (seasonal) cycles. Freshwater runoff, the main factor determining salinity distribution, is also the cause of the high variability in suspended sediment concentrations. The biological processes are less well studied and information on the link between the benthic and pelagic systems is particularly lacking. Mysids, through their role as detritivores and as a major component in the diet of some fish, provide this link. Of the four species of mysid distributed longitudinally in the Tamar Estuary, the most abundant isMesopodopsis slabberi which occurs between 5 and 25 km from the estuary head. Observations over an annual cycle have shown marked seasonal changes in both abundance and distribution in the estuary. During winter and spring, densities remained generally low (〈50 m−3) but, as water temperatures increased, the density increased and reachedca 1200 individuals m−3 in July. There was a shift in the longitudinal distribution ofM. slabberi in response to changes in the position of the salinity gradient. Adults comprised the majority of the population in salinities less than 10‰ whereas juveniles and immature animals were distributed over a wider area than the adults and occurred in water of higher salinity than the main adult distribution.M. slabberi appears to utilise the two-layered estuarine circulation to maintain its position in the estuary.
