Notizen: Summary New features recorded here for the first time include demonstration of the presence of a covering of tiny diamond shaped scales all over the body of the helical cell of the mature spermatozoids of Chara corallina Klein ex Willd. as well as a covering of slightly larger diamond shaped scales over the surfaces of the two flagella which has previously been seen by other authors in spermatozoids of both Chara and Nitella. The arrangement of microtubules in the anterior end of the spermatozoid, as a layer completely surrounding the anterior row of mitochondria resembles that of Chara fibrosa described by Pickett-Heaps 1968 and differs from that described for Nitella missouriensis by Turner 1968; these details are therefore perhaps phyletically significant. Other features such as the partial degeneration of the anteriorly placed flagellar bases are similar to those previously described for these two species although the distance between the bases and the point of emergence of the flagella from the body surface seems to differ somewhat from species to species. The investigation includes observations on the dehiscence of the antheridia and on the emergence of living cells from the spermatogenous filaments. The possible phyletic significance of some of these observations is discussed in a preliminary way.

Notizen: Summary The flagellar apparatus of 3 isolates ofHeterosigma akashiwo (Hada) Hada has been studied by serial sectioning. The two basal bodies lie at almost right angles to one another, but in a different plane, and are interconnected by an extensive root system. This consists of three roots (i) a massive cross-banded fibrous root (= rhizoplast) which extends from near the proximal ends of both basal bodies to the anterior surface of the nucleus, (ii) a compound microtubular root with a layered structure, associated with the hairy anterior flagellum and extending to the anterior surface and (iii) the rhizostyle which passes between the two basal bodies leading anteriorly to a vesicle in the flagellar groove region and following the nucleus posteriorly terminating deep in the cytoplasm. Both the characteristic arrangement of the basal bodies and the presence of the complex layered structure are characteristic of theRaphidophyceae. The broad microtubular root, however, to which the layered structure is attached, appears to be characteristic of nearly all heterokont algae, fungi and protozoa so far examined. Thus, our findings have important implications on phylogenetic relationships within the heterokonts and lead us to question whether some of the present classes such as theChrysophyceae andXanthophyceae are indeed natural groups.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Abstract An intracellular parasite occurring inCryptomonas rostratiformis and less numerously also inC. erosa andC. phaseolus. The parasite is described. It grows in the dorsal side of the host near the nucleus from which it is optically indistinguishable in young stages. When mature the parasite fills 1/3 to 1/2 the volume of theCryptomonas cell. It is seen as a colourless blister, which pushes back the plastid of the host. Reproduction occurs by separation of the protoplast into a hundred or moreBodo-like swarmers which perhaps represent the infectious phase. Under certain conditions, however, such as during decline of theCryptomonas population, the parasite transforms into thick-walled spindle-shaped cysts. Like the swarmers these cysts are released by rupture of the cryptomonad cells. The fate of the cysts is not known. TheCryptomonas population is destroyed by the infection in the course of a few days. Literature studies have shown that the parasite has been known for a long time, but considered incorrectly by different authors as part of theCryptomonas, or as a result of phagotrophic uptake of theCryptomonas. The parasite is compared with a somewhat similar parasite inMallomonas, and with certain parasitic dinoflagellates. The similarity with the latter is superficial only as it posesses a eucaryotic nucleus. The parasite shows some similarity with the genusParadinium (Mycetozoa) as well as with certainSporozoa.

Notizen: Summary The terminology used to describe the cytoskeleton of protists is sometimes redundant and confusing. The independent origins of protistology from studies on algae, fungi, and protozoans led to these problems. Additionally, recent studies indicate that seemingly unrelated taxa form new, monophyletic groups. However, homologous structures that support monophyly are difficult to identify when the literature is published in journals restricted to specific fields or when the terminology is in duplicate or triplicate. The purpose of this paper is to establish clear definitions, identify synonyms, and indicate homologies where possible.

    Thema: Biologie
Notizen: Summary While green algae usually lack one of the outer dynein arms in the axoneme, flagella of the octoflagellated prasinophytePyramimonas octopus possess dynein arms on all peripheral doublets. The outer dynein arm on doublet no. 1 is modified, and additional structures are associated with doublets no. 2 and 6. The flagellar scales are asymmetrically arranged. Thus the two rows of thick flagellar hairscales are displaced towards doublet no. 6,i.e., in the direction of the effective stroke of each flagellum. The underlayer of small scales includes two nearly opposite double rows scales, arranged in the longitudinal direction of the flagellum. The hairscales emerge from these rows. The double rows are separated on one side by 9, on the other by 11 rows of helically arranged scales. The central pair of microtubules twists, but the axoneme itself (represented by the 9 peripheral doublets), does not seem to rotate. The flagella are arranged in two groups, showing modified 180° rotational symmetry. The effective strokes of the two central flagella are exactly opposite, while the other flagella beat in six intermediate directions.

Notizen: Summary The flagellar apparatus of the octoflagellate prasinophytePyramimonas octopus has been examined in detail. While basal bodies of biflagellate green algae typically are interconnected by a proximal and distal fibre, the eight flagella ofPyramimonas octopus are joined together by at least 60 fibrillar structures, in this respect the most complex algal cell examined so far. The flagellar apparatus is asymmetrical, but part of it shows 180 degress rotational symmetry. We have detected 9 thick connecting fibres, c. 45 thinner fibres, 6 proximal fibres, one of which associates with only one basal body, and a large synistosome. Four 3-stranded microtubular roots are present, one of which associates with a cross-banded fibre leading to the aperture of the scale reservoir. Six rhizoplasts have been seen, but 8 are probably present. The association of each root and connecting fibre to individual (numbered) triplets of the basal bodies is described. The basal body system has been followed during flagellar replication. Newly formed flagella occupy different positions in the cell during 3 cell generations, but finally in the fourth generation end in the same central position near the nucleus. Based on the observed changes in position during successive generations, a numbering system for flagella in general is proposed.

Notizen: Summary The use of a precise terminology is important to the unambiguous exchange of information in the multidisciplinary area of protistology. In this paper we attempt to establish clear definitions, give illustrations, and comment on the different terms used for cell surface structures of protists and related organisms.

Beschreibung: Our understanding of the evolution of life on Earth is limited by the imperfection of the fossil record. One reason for this imperfect record is that organisms without hard parts, such as bones, shells, and wood, have a very low potential to enter the fossil record. Occasionally, however, exceptional fossil...
