    Notes: Abstract Strontium isotopic studies of kimberlites reveal no significant differences between the respective whole-rock Sr87/Sr86 ratios of fissure and pipe kimberlites. Kimberlites from the Swartruggens fissure (calcareous micaceous kimberlite) have Sr87/Sr86 ratios of from 0.709 to 0.716, whilst those from the Wesselton pipe have Sr87/Sr86 ratios of from 0.708 to 0.715. Other kimberlites range from 0.706 to 0.715. Samples are considered to be late Cretaceous to early Tertiary and thus the ratios are approximately initial ratios. The Sr87/Sr86 ratios bear no relation to the Rb or Sr content of individual kimberlite bodies. The high initial ratios are not due to bulk assimilation of granitic material in either a kimberlite or carbonatitic magma. Rb-Sr data for garnet peridotites and eclogite xenoliths in kimberlite are not compatible with production of kimberlite by eclogite fractionation from a melt derived from garnet lherzolite. The Sr isotopic composition of kimberlite is compatible with partial melting of garnet mica peridotite. The isotopic composition of liquids formed by partial melting of this rock can be modified by (i) gross contamination with material of low Sr87/Sr86 ratio or (ii) selective diffusion of material of high Sr87/Sr86 ratio into kimberlitic fluids.

    Notes: Abstract The Gibeon cluster of Namibian kimberlites is emplaced into the Orange River Belt which has accreted to the Kaapvaal Craton. These “offcraton” kimberlites lack diamonds and are younger than the diamondiferous “on-craton” kimberlites. The Hanaus-I and Louwrensia kimberlites each contain a bimodal suite of upper-mantle-derived garnet lherzolite xenoliths characterized by a coarse granular or mosaic porphyroclastic texture. The Louwrensia pipe in addition contains garnet harzburgites. Deformed lherzolites are not iron-enriched relative to the coarse types. Conditions of equilibration calculated by the Wells-Wood method are 841–1,013° C at 25.6–36.3 kbars, and 869–1,195° C at 23.9–39.4 kbars, for coarse lherzolites from Louwrensia and Hanaus respectively, and from 1,080–1,112° C at 31.6–34.5 kbars, and 983–1,228° C at 24.7–35.2 kbars, for mosaic porphyroclastic types from Louwrensia and Hanaus respectively. The coarse varieties from both localities have similar equilibration conditions to coarse lherzolites from “on-craton” kimberlites and define the lower limb of a perturbed geotherm. The upper high temperature limb of the Namibian geotherm is considered to be an apparent geotherm generated by the deformation and metasomatism of the upper mantle by a rising diapir. Such geotherms, being the result of kimberlite-xenolith interactions, provide no stratigraphic or thermal information concerning the site of kimberlite or diamond formation.

    Notes: Abstract Determination of rare earth element (REE) abundances in rocks of the Fen complex has shown that within rocks of the first magmatic series REE abundances increase in the order urtite〈ijolite〈fine grained søvite 〈coarse grained søvite〈silicocarbonatite. Low pressure differentiation of an ijolitic magma by crystallization of apatite, melanite, pyroxene and nepheline is reflected in the very variable La/Yb ratios (4–100) of the urtites and melteigites. Similar La/Yb ratios (40–60) in ijolite, tinguaite and søvite indicate that the søvites are not the result of extensive differentiation of a carbonated ijolitic magma. Within the second magmatic series REE increase in the order damtjernite〈vibetoite-rauhaugite〈rødberg. La/Yb ratios (30–551) are variable and reflect volatile transport of REE possibly as carbonate complexes. The effects of volatile transport, low and high pressure differentiation and liquid immiscibility on the Fen magmas are discussed and it is considered that parental magmas had relatively high La/Yb ratios (40–60). Utilizing petrological evidence from other alkaline complexes coupled with experimental studies it is considered that the parental magma was a carbonated nephelinite produced by limited (〈10%) partial melting of the mantle. All the Fen rocks are placed in a petrogentic scheme in which a carbonated nephelinite magma undergoes liquid immiscibility, differentiation and volatile transport.

    Notes: Abstract Garnet lherzolite xenoliths of similar petrography and mineralogy are found in the Elwin Bay, Nanorluk, and Amayersuk kimberlites. The xenoliths are either coarse equant to coarse tabular or porphyroclastic in texture. Compositions of coexisting pyroxenes indicates equilibration at 1000–1270° C at 34–41 kb (Wood-Banno/Wood method) or 865–1200° C at 29–36 kb (Wells/Wood method). No simple correlation exists between textural types and equilibration temperature. A primary spinel-bearing garnet lherzolite has equilibrated at 840° C at 21 kb (Wells/Wood) and provides the only known example of a xenolith with relatively high Cr/Cr+Al which has equilibrated at the spinel to garnet lherzolite transition along the continental geotherm. The pressure and temperature estimates for the xenoliths lie above those of the steady state geotherm and indicate that a perturbed geotherm existed in this region at the time of kimberlite intrusion. The formation of perturbed geotherms is discussed and it is considered that the upper high temperature limbs of inflected geotherms are transient pseudogeotherms generated in response to a thermal aureole about a rising mantle diapir and that the lherzolites which define such a geotherm represent a telescoped section of the mantle and include xenoliths derived from above and below the point of kimberlite liquid segregation. The lower temperature limbs of inflected geotherms are considered to be representative of the steady state geotherm and are sampled by the kimberlite which after segregation from the diapir rises at a much faster rate than the parent diapir and passes through material which is unaffected by the diapir thermal aureole.

    Notes: Abstract Malignites from the Poohbah Lake complex of northwestern Ontario, Canada are melanocratic cumulates. Cumulus pyroxene and apatite are poikilitically enclosed in a groundmass of large plates of intercumulus orthoclase and nepheline. Nepheline-feldspar fingerprint-like intergrowths occur. Nephelines are commonly zeolitized and pyroxenes altered to aggregates of biotite and/or garnet by deuteric alteration. Pyroxenes are weakly zoned from Di71 Hd18Ac11 to Di63Hd22Ac15, and are similar to the least evolved pyroxenes of other alkaline rocks. Nephelines all have compositions within the Morozewicz-Buerger convergence field and feldspars have a limited compositional range from Or88 to Or95. Perthites are absent. Inconsistancies in the usage of the terms malignite and juvite are discussed and it is considered that a non-genetic petrographic classification of nepheline syenites leads to the obscuration of a group of potassic nepheline syenites, characterized by the presence of nepheline plus orthoclase which are typically associated with saturated to over-saturated alkaline rocks, contain pseudo-leucite or nepheline-orthoclase intergrowths, are emplaced in mobile belts and are not associated with rocks of the ijolite-carbonatite suite. A genetic classification of nepheline syenites is suggested and it is proposed that; (1) mafic-rich nepheline syenites be referred to as mela-nepheline syenites (sensu lato) rather than as malignites; (2) the term malignite be used for magmatic potassic nepheline syenites characterised by the presence of nepheline plus a single potassium-rich feldspar (orthoclase or microcline) and devoid of exsolution perthite under subsolvus conditions; (3) the metasomatic malignites and juvites of ijolite-carbonatite complexes be referred to as varieties of fenites.

    Notes: Abstract Phlogopites in the wolgidites, fitzroyites and cedricites (leucite lamproites) of the West Kimberley area range in composition from titaniferous phlogopite to titaniferous tetraferriphlogopite. Two distinct compositional trends are present. In wolgidites micas are characterized by strong total iron enrichment, moderate Al and Mg depletion and little enrichment in tetrahedral ferric iron. Micas in fitzroyites and cedricites are characterized by strong depletion in Al and strong enrichment in tetrahedral ferric iron at approximately constant Mg contents. Individual centers of fitzroyite intrusion are characterized by distinct mica TiO2 contents. The phlogopite compositional trends at low pressures are very different to those of kimberlite micas. An origin of these lamproites involving differentiation of a kimberlitic magma is considered unlikely.

    Notes: Abstract Neutron activation determination of La, Ce, Sm, Eu, Tb, Yb, Lu, Ta, Hf, Sc, Co and Th in potassic lavas from the Birunga and Toro-Ankole regions show that the rocks are characterized by high rare earth element (REE) contents (161–754 ppm) and form two groups based upon differing La/Yb ratios. One group is made up of katungite, ugandite and mafurite with La/Yb =146–312, and the other of rocks of the leucitite and phonolitic tephrite series, La/Yb =30–56. The trace element content of the ugandite group is similar to that of kimberlites. The data do not indicate any trends of differentiation or simple relationships between the two groups of rocks, although katungite is unlikely to be parental to rocks of lower La/Yb ratios. It is unlikely that in terms of La/Yb ratios that partial melting of mica-garnet-lherzolite mantle can form katungite because of the very small amounts of partial melting required (0.2%), although the La/Yb ratios of 150–200 (ugandites, mafurites) and 30–60 (leucitites, phonolitic tephrites) can be accounted for by 0.3–1.5% and 1–9% melting respectively, if the REE are then concentrated without further La and Yb fractionation. Partial melting of mantle which has been metasomatized by alkaline earths and REE bearing fluids or mixing of carbonatite and nephelenite are also compatable with the observed geochemistry of the lavas. It is considered that gas transfer processes which selectively enrich the light REE may have obscured REE evidence pertaining to early partial melting and/or differentiation processes and therefore that REE geochemistry is of little use in determining the petrogenetic processes involved in the formation of potassic lavas.
