    Description: We use observations of ionospheric scintillation at equatorial latitudes from two GPS receivers specially modified for recording, at a sampling rate of 50 Hz, the phase and the amplitude of the L1 signal and the Total Electron Content (TEC) from L1 and L2. The receivers, called GISTM (GPS Ionospheric Scintillation and TEC Monitor), are located in Vietnam (Hue, 16.4 N, 107.6 E; Hoc Mon, 10.9 N, 106.6 E). These experimental observations are analysed together with the tomographic reconstruction of the ionosphere produced by the Multi-Instrument Data Analysis System (MIDAS) for investigating the moderate geomagnetic storm which occurred on early April 2006, under low solar activity. The synergic adoption of the ionospheric imaging and of the GISTM measurements supports the identification of the scale-sizes of the ionospheric irregularities causing scintillations and helps the interpretation of the physical mechanisms generating or inhibiting the appearance of the equatorial F layer irregularities. In particular, our study attributes to the turning of the IMF (Interplanetary Magnetic Field) between northward and southward direction an important role in the inhibition of the generation of spread F irregularities resulting in a lack of scintillation enhancement in the post-sunset hours.

    Description: Bivalve larvae are small (50–400 μ m) and difficult to identify using standard microscopy, thus limiting inferences from samples collected in the field. With the advent of ShellBi, an image analysis technique, accurate identification of bivalve larvae is now possible but rapid image acquisition and processing remains a challenge. The objectives of this research were to (1) develop a benchtop automated image acquisition system for use with ShellBi, (2) evaluate the system, and (3) create a protocol that would maintain high classification accuracies for larvae of the eastern oyster, Crassostrea virginica . The automated system decreased image acquisition time from 2–13 h to 46 min per slide and resulted in the highest classification accuracies at the lowest tested magnification (7X) and shortest image acquisition time (46 min). Quality control tests indicated that classification accuracies were sensitive to camera and light source settings and that measuring changes in light source and color channel intensities over time was an important part of quality control during routine operations. Validation experiments indicated that under proper settings, automated image acquisition coupled with ShellBi could rapidly classify C. virginica larvae with high accuracies (80–93%). Results suggest that this automated image acquisition system coupled with ShellBi can be used to rapidly image plankton samples and classify C. virginica larvae allowing for expanded capability to understand bivalve larval ecology in the field. Additionally, the automated system has application for rapidly imaging other planktonic organisms at high magnification.

    Description: This hierarchical approach to information display forces the development of a set of human oriented system models which will guide the design of the displays. If the appropriate information is provided at the appropriate time, it is likely that less information will be displayed at any given time, and the quality of the displayed information will require less operator effort to integrate into an assimilatable form. A problem with contemporary control rooms is that there is too much information for an operator to be able to assimilate quickly, easily, and accurately. It is suggested that necessary direction for research in the area of automated control room design is to develop displays which provide active decision aiding for the modern controller. Displays are needed which provide information compatible with the operator's current internal model, filter out irrelevant information, and summarize and condense lower level information.

    Description: A model of the PLANT system using the discrete control modeling techniques developed by Miller is described. Discrete control models attempt to represent in a mathematical form how a human operator might decompose a complex system into simpler parts and how the control actions and system configuration are coordinated so that acceptable overall system performance is achieved. Basic questions include knowledge representation, information flow, and decision making in complex systems. The structure of the model is a general hierarchical/heterarchical scheme which structurally accounts for coordination and dynamic focus of attention. Mathematically, the discrete control model is defined in terms of a network of finite state systems. Specifically, the discrete control model accounts for how specific control actions are selected from information about the controlled system, the environment, and the context of the situation. The objective is to provide a plausible and empirically testable accounting and, if possible, explanation of control behavior.
