    Description: This paper evaluates the impact caused by attaching a personalized pension projection (PPP), to the annually report of pension savings. This PPP shows the revenues obtained by the workers when postponing their retirement three years after the legal age for retirement in the Chilean pension system. The method to correct the endogenous treatment which was used it was a quasi-experimental method using instruments such as geographical and demographical information and the number of post offices by Region. The results show that the PPP's reception once has not significant effect on the retirement decision. However, when the treatment is intensified it begins to be taken into consideration. The PPP's reception during two consecutive years, 2005 and 2006, significantly reduced the probability of retirement decision during the year 2011. Finally, the results show that the treatment has much more effects in individuals with higher pension savings.

    Description: In this study, we present a methodology to generate a tsunami waveform synthetic catalogue (TWSC) for some coastal locations, compatible with geodynamic constraints of the area of interest. We apply it to the assessment of the tsunami hazard related to Gloria Fault a segment of the Nubia-Eurasia plate boundary between Iberia and the Azores. We focus on earthquake generated tsunamis only. To do this, we assume that the time and space distribution of the seismic events is known. Without a formal way to relate earthquake hazard and tsunami hazard statistics, we have to simulate the tsunami impact (tsunami wave height) along the coast from the largest number of possible earthquake scenarios. However, the computational resources required to perform the tsunami simulation make this process time-consuming.We generate a synthetic earthquake catalogue that includes all fault parameters needed to characterise and compute the seafloor deformation. The time and space rupture distribution is kept compatible with global plate kinematic models. We use Tsunami Empirical Green Functions (EGF) to compute extensively a large number of synthetic tsunami waveforms for all sources included in the synthetic catalogue and all coastal locations. We present a TWSC for a time span of 20kyr, and we analyse tsunami impact regarding wave heights.The advantages of the method consist in the fact that while we keep the geodynamic constraints of the study area we allow some variability of all seismic source parameters to reproduce better, the variability observed in real catalogues. On the other hand, the use of EGF to do the forward tsunami modelling proves to be efficient and less time consuming than traditional forward modelling to compute tsunami waveforms from a massive e number of earthquake scenarios.The application of the method to the Gloria fault case proved to be successful. We use the tsunami empirical Green’s functions to efficiently compute the synthetic tsunami waveforms for the dataset of coastal locations, thus providing the basis for tsunami impact characterization. We present the results in the form of offshore wave heights for all coastal points in the dataset. Our results focus on the northeast Atlantic basin, showing that earthquake-induced tsunamis in the transcurrent segment of the Azores–Gibraltar plate boundary pose a minor threat to coastal areas north of Portugal and beyond the Strait of Gibraltar. However, in Morocco, the Azores, and the Madeira islands, we can expect wave heights between 0.6 and 0.8 m, leading to precautionary evacuation of coastal areas. The advantages of the method are its easy application to other regions and the low computation effort needed.

    Description: Population aging and increasing pressure on health systems are two issues that demand solutions. Involving and empowering citizens as active managers of their health represents a desirable shift from the current culture mainly focused on treatment of disease, to one also focused on continuous health management and well-being. Current developments in technological areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT), lead to new technological solutions that can aid this shift in the healthcare sector. This study presents the design, development, implementation and evaluation of a platform called Common Recognition and Identification Platform (CRIP), a part of the CareStore project, which aims at supporting caregivers and citizens to manage health routines in a seamless way. Specifically, the CRIP offers sensor-based support for seamless identification of users and health devices. A set of initial requirements was defined with a focus on usability limitations and current sensor technologies. The CRIP was designed and implemented using several technologies that enable seamless integration and interaction of sensors and people, namely Near Field Communication and fingerprint biometrics for identification and authentication, Bluetooth for communication with health devices and web services for wider integration with other platforms. Two CRIP prototypes were implemented and evaluated in laboratory during a period of eight months. The evaluations consisted of identifying users and devices, as well as seamlessly configure and acquire vital data from the last. Also, the entire Carestore platform was deployed in a nursing home where its usability was evaluated with caregivers. The evaluations helped assess that seamless identification of users and seamless configuration and communication with health devices is feasible and can help enable the IoT on healthcare applications. Therefore, the CRIP and similar platforms could be transformed into a valuable enabling technology for secure and reliable IoT deployments on the healthcare sector.

    Description: Capability for sea surface salinity observation was an important gap in ocean remote sensing in the last few decades of the 20th century. New technological developments during the 1990s at the European Space Agency led to the proposal of SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), an Earth explorer opportunity mission based on the use of a microwave interferometric radiometer, MIRAS (Microwave Imaging Radiometer with Aperture Synthesis). SMOS, the first satellite ever addressing the observation of ocean salinity from space, was successfully launched in November 2009. The determination of salinity from the MIRAS radiometric measurements at 1.4 GHz is a complex procedure that requires high performance from the instrument and accurate modelling of several physical processes that impact on the microwave emission of the ocean’s surface. This paper introduces SMOS in the ocean remote sensing context, and summarizes the MIRAS principles of operation and the SMOS salinity retrieval approach. It describes the Spanish SMOS high-level data processing centre (CP34) and the SMOS Barcelona Expert Centre on Radiometric Calibration and Ocean Salinity (SMOS-BEC), and presents a preliminary validation of global sea surface salinity maps operationally produced by CP34.

    Description: The nature and location of the present EUR/AFR boundary configuration in the Azores region is controversial and, in particular, the pattern of the present day deformation associated with plate boundary processes, is still unknown. We present here GPS data from 10 stations, in a segment of this boundary (Terceira Island), where data at 2 epochs (1999 and 2001) are available. GPS data were processed using GAMIT and FONDA, with horizontal position repeatability circa 3 mm and 2 mm, respectively, for 1999 and 2001 epochs. Stations horizontal displacements range from 0.96 to 4.60 mm/yr. Strain analysis indicates compression for four sub-networks. The rates of local rotation are consistent for three sub-networks on the western part of Terceira, exhibiting a clockwise rotation of about 8° per million years.     Description: The segment of the Africa–Eurasia plate boundary between the Gloria Fault and the Strait of Gibraltar has been the setting of significant tsunamigenic earthquakes. However, their precise location and rupture mechanism remain poorly understood. The investigation of each event contributes to a better understanding of the structure of this diffuse plate boundary and ultimately leads to a better evaluation of the seismic and tsunami hazard. The 31 March 1761 event is one of the few known transatlantic tsunamis. Macroseismic data and tsunami travel times were used in previous studies to assess its source area. However, no one discussed the geological source of this event. In this study, we present a reappraisal of tsunami data to show that the observations data set is compatible with a geological source close to Coral Patch and Ampere seamounts. We constrain the rupture mechanism with plate kinematics and the tectonic setting of the area. This study favours the hypothesis that the 1761 event occurred in the southwest of the likely location of the 1 November 1755 earthquake in a slow deforming compressive regime driven by the dextral transpressive collision between Africa and Eurasia.
