Description:
The Nippon Foundation-GEBCO Seabed 2030 project, an officially endorsed action of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, has a vision to inspire the complete mapping of the world’s ocean by 2030 and to compile all bathymetric data into the freely-available GEBCO Ocean Map. By providing free access to high-resolution bathymetric data, the initiative seeks to enhance our understanding of oceanography and the role of the ocean in regulating the Earth's climate and promoting equitable development of a sustainable ocean economy. A better understanding of the ocean floor will also contribute to knowledge about ocean currents, water masses, and the distribution of marine life, critical factors in climate regulation. The ocean is vital to the livelihoods of over 3 billion people, and its economy, which includes shipping, tourism, fishing, and offshore energy production, is estimated to reach USD $3 trillion by 2030. Over the past decade, this initiative has increased mapped ocean floor coverage from 8% to 23.8%, emphasizing the need for cross-sectoral collaboration. This presentation highlights the private sector's role in Seabed 2030, addressing opportunities, benefits, and challenges. By collaborating with Seabed 2030, the private sector can contribute to sustainable development of the ocean economy and promote scientific knowledge. Ultimately, a comprehensive map of the world's seafloor will enhance our ability to protect and sustainably use the ocean's resources, ensuring the ocean's vital role in regulating the Earth's climate and supporting global livelihoods.
