Description: Energy transfer mechanisms between the atmosphere and the deep ocean have been studied for many years. Their importance to the ocean’s energy balance and possible implications on mixing are widely accepted. The slab model by Pollard (Deep-Sea Res Oceanogr Abstr 17(4):795–812, 1970) is a well-established simulation of near-inertial motion and energy inferred through wind-ocean interaction. Such a model is set up with hourly wind forcing from the NCEP-CFSR reanalysis that allows computations up to high latitudes without loss of resonance. Augmenting the one-dimensional model with the horizontal divergence of the near-inertial current field leads to direct estimates of energy transfer spectra of internal wave radiation from the mixed layer base into the ocean interior. Calculations using this hybrid model are carried out for the North Atlantic during the years 1989 and 1996, which are associated with positive and negative North Atlantic Oscillation index, respectively. Results indicate a range of meridional regimes with distinct energy transfer ratios. These are interpreted in terms of the mixed layer depth, the buoyancy frequency at the mixed layer base, and the wind field structure. The average ratio of radiated energy fluxes from the mixed layer to near-inertial wind power for both years is approximately 12%. The dependence on the wind structure is supported by simulations of idealized wind stress fronts with variable width and translation speeds.

Description: St Martin of Tours is one of Christianity’s major saints and his significance reaches far beyond the powerful radiance of his iconic act of charity. While the saint and his cult have been researched comprehensively in Germany and France, his cult in the British Isles proves to be fairly unexplored. Andre Mertens closes this gap for Anglo-Saxon England by editing all the age’s surviving texts on the saint, including a commentary and translations. Moreover, Mertens looks beyond the horizon of the surviving body of literary relics and dedicates an introductory study to an analysis of the saint’s cult in Anglo-Saxon England and his significance for Anglo-Saxon culture.

Description: This third volume of Lage Landen Studies offers a glimpse of recent international and internationalizing trends in Dutch Studies. It presents a comparative view of the virtually synchronic dynamics of the translation, promotion and reception of contemporary Dutch author Arnon Grunberg in five Romance languages between 1996 and 2009. This interdisciplinary approach, which focuses on the crossroads of language, literature and culture, as well as on aspects of the sociologies of literature and translation, is combined with views from translation studies, comparative literature, and bibliology in order to build bridges between theory and practice. The first part is devoted to the seldom-heard perspective of the translator and dissects the circumstances in which works by Arnon Grunberg – and by his heteronym Marek van der Jagt – are translated, promoted and received in five Romance languages. The function and ‘visual translation’ of book covers are also analyzed. Notwithstanding the relative homogeneity of the languages, their cultural background and geographical location, remarkable differences come to light. The first part rounds off by looking at the promotional possibilities of writer’s tours and translation workshops in the target countries.

Description: Dinoflagellate cysts were used as a proxy for reconstructing the salinity variations during the Holocene in the southwestern Black Sea. The aim of this study was to determine the timing of the reconnection between the Black and Marmara seas. Core GeoB 7625-2, located 50 km northeast of the mouth of the Sakarya River, was sampled with a 200-year resolution between 7.42 and 0.52 ka BP. The lower part of the core was sampled with varying resolution. A distinct change in the dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from freshwater/brackish water to saltwater was observed between similar to 8.25 and similar to 7.97 ka BP, which is similar to 0.6 ka earlier than observed in other dinoflagellate cyst studies. This discrepancy may indicate the diachronous salinification of the Black Sea. The freshwater to brackish water assemblage is dominated by Pyxidinopsis psilata and Spiniferites cruciformis, while the most important euryhaline species are Lingulodinium machaerophorum and cysts of Pentapharsodinium dalei. The average process length of Lingulodinium machaerophorum was used as a salinity proxy. Both proxies suggest a gradual reconnection between the Black and Marmara seas, and these findings confirm earlier studies. Peridinium ponticum is restricted to the Black Sea; abundance fluctuations of this species were controlled by salinity variations and changes in nutrient concentrations. Earlier studies have demonstrated that the 800 to 500 year cycles observed in the sedimentary record are related to the intensity of the discharge of the Sakarya River, and linked to the North Atlantic Oscillations. Cysts of Pentapharsodinium dalei and Spiniferites spp. fluctuated synchronously with the clay layer frequency. The poor preservation of these forms may indicate shelfal transport during periods of intense river discharge. The variation in relative abundance of heterotrophic species does not correlate with the clay layer frequency, since upwelling and nutrient supply also influenced their abundances. Lingulodinium machaerophorum shows the highest relative abundances during periods with reduced river input.
