Description / Table of Contents: Summary Cationicly prepared oligostyrene mixtures can be separated into the individual oligomers (dimers to pentamers) by gelchromatography employing a gel of methylmethacrylate and 2 mole-% ethyleneglykoldimethacrylate. The fractionation can be followed qualitatively by UV-spectroscopy and quantitatively by gaschromatographic analysis of the eluates. — Tristyrenes, tetrastyrenes, and pentastyrenes can be isolated in preparative quantities by the gelchromatographic method from the oligomer mixtures obtained from styrene and dilute sulfuric acid; however, the individual fractions thus obtained are not uniform but consist of isomer mixtures.

Notes: Abstract Foods, e.g. chicken, shrimps, frog legs, spices, different dried vegetables, potatoes and fruits are legally irradiated in many countries and are probably also exported into countries, which do not permit irradiation of any food. Therefore all countries need analytical methods to determine whether food has been irradiated or not. Up to now, two physical (ESR-spectroscopy and thermoluminescence) and two chemical methods (o-tyrosine and volatile compounds) are available for routine analysis. Several results of the application of these four mentioned methods on different foods are presented and a short outlook on other methods (chemiluminescence, DNA-changes, biological assays, viscometric method and photostimulated luminescence) will be given.

Notes: Abstract Purpose. Two recombinant IFN-β products have been approved for the treatment of multiple sclerosis, a glycosylated form with the predicted natural amino acid sequence (IFN-β-la) and a non-glycosylated form that has a Met-1 deletion and a Cys-17 to Ser mutation (IFN-β-lb). The structural basis for activity differences between IFN-β-la and IFN-β-lb, is determined. Methods. In vitro antiviral, antiproliferative and immunomodulatory assays were used to directly compare the two IFN-β products. Size exclusion chromatography (SEC), SDS-PAGE, thermal denaturation, and X-ray crystallography were used to examine structural differences. Results. IFN-β- la was 10 times more active than IFN-β- Ib with specific activities in a standard antiviral assay of 20 × 107 lU/mg for IFN-β-la and 2 × 107 lU/mg for IFN-β-lb. Of the known structural differences between IFN-β-la and IFN-β-lb, only glycosylation affected in vitro activity. Deglycosylation of IFN-β-la produced a decrease in total activity that was primarily caused by the formation of an insoluble disulfide-linked IFN precipitate. Deglycosylation also resulted in an increased sensitivity to thermal denaturation. SEC data for IFN-β-lb revealed large, soluble aggregates that had reduced antiviral activity (approximated at 0.7 × 107 lU/mg). Crystallographic data for IFN-β-la revealed that the glycan formed H-bonds with the peptide backbone and shielded an uncharged surface from solvent exposure. Conclusions. Together these results suggest that the greater biological activity of IFN-β-la is due to a stabilizing effect of the carbohydrate on structure.

Description / Table of Contents: Cationicly obtained mixtures of styrene and oligostyrenes having polymerization degrees of 2 to 5 may be separated by temperature programmed gaschromatography. The same method can also be applied to the determination of the contents of styrene and oligostyrenes in commercial polystyrenes prepared by radical polymerization. It is found that the DIN 53719 method for determining styrene in polystyrene includes also unsaturated oligomers. The sum of the monomer and oligomer contents determined by gaschromatography is in agreement with the amount of the methanol-soluble portion determined according to the DIN 53718 method.

Description / Table of Contents: The Behavior of Mono- and Diorganylphosphine Sulfides towards Metal Carbonyl Systems, IXReactions with the SH Group of Pentacarbonyl(mercaptodimethylphosphine)chromium(O)The acidic SH group in the complex (OC)5CrP(CH3)2SH (1) can be methylated with CH2N2 to give 2. The anion in 3a, b is obtained by reaction of N(C2H5)3 or sodium with 1. The binuclear via phosphorus and sulfur linked dichromate anion in 5 Results from 3a and (OC)5CrTHF. The i. r., 1H, and 31P n. m. r. spectra of the new prepared compounds 2, 3a, b, and 5 as well as a correlation between the 31P n. m. r. spectra and v(P-S) are discussed.
