Notes: Abstract A Gaussian ensemble of Hermitian matrices depending on a parameter α is considered. When α=0, the ensemble is Gaussian Orthogonal, and when α=1, it is Gaussian Unitary. An analytic expression for then-level correlation and cluster functions is given for anyn and 0≦α≦1. This ensemble is of relevance in the study of time reversal symmetry breaking of nuclear interactions.

Notes: The eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the n×n unitary matrix of finite Fourier transform whose j, k element is (1/(n)1/2)exp[(2πi/n)jk], i=(−1)1/2, is determined. In doing so, a multitude of identities, some of which may be new, are encountered. A conjecture is advanced.

Notes: Abstract High-temperature sulfidation studies have been carried out on Fe-15Cr-4Al with and without 1% Y in the temperature range 700–1000°C in an H 2-H2 S environment over the sulfur pressure range of 10 −9−10−3 atm. Two-layered and three-layered sulfide scales were observed in both alloys at low and high sulfur pressures, respectively. The pegging phenomenon, similar to that occurring in high-temperature oxidation, across the innermost layer and substrate was observed in the case of the yttrium-containing alloy. Yttrium was found to be associated with aluminum and chromium sulfides. The role of yttrium was more evident at low than at high sulfur pressures and was found to reduce the parabolic rate constants by a factor of about one-half to one-seventh, respectively.

Notes: Abstract The effect of small concentrations of zirconium on the cyclic oxidation behavior of Fe-15Cr-4Al was investigated at 1300°C. The zirconium concentrations studied were 0.2, 0.55, and 1 wt.%. Each cycle consisted of a 1-hr isothermal period followed by 30-min cooling of the sample in air. Nodule formation was observed in higher zirconium-containing alloys, 0.55% and 1% zirconium, and the base alloy. The nodules formed at the corners and edges of the specimen and grew with increasing number of cycles. EDAX and line scans of cross section of oxidized samples demonstrated that the nodules were composed of iron oxides. Suggestions are given regarding the mode of nodule formation. Results show that additions of 0.2% zirconium and 1% yttrium to the base alloy suppress the nodule formation and provide the best resistance to cyclic oxidation.

Notes: Abstract Modified force fields have been applied to the hexachlorides and hexabromides anions of technetium. Mean amplitudes of vibration are also calculated at 0 K and 298 K. Trends of calculated data are discussed. The observed frequencies are 100% fitted by both the modified force fields used.

Notes: Abstract Molecular force field studies of hexabromo-thorates(IV) and-uranates(IV) have been carried out using four different force field models. Weighted least square adjustment has been used to fit the observed frequencies. Mean amplitudes of vibration have also been calculated at 0°K and 298°K. The trends of force constants and mean amplitudes have also been discussed.

Notes: Abstract Dyson's method is adopted here for the so called Gaussian ensembles. Incidently this confirms the long cherished belief that the statistical properties of a small number of eigenvalues is the same for the two kinds of ensembles, the circular and the Gaussian ones.
