    Notes: Abstract. The performance of several methods for estimating local surface geometry (the principal frame plus the principal quadric) are examined by applying them to a suite of synthetic and real test data which have been corrupted by various amounts of additive Gaussian noise. Methods considered include finite differences, a facet based approach, and quadric surface fitting. The nonlinear quadric fitting method considered was found to perform the best but has the greatest computational cost. The facet based approach works as well as the other quadric fitting methods and has a much smaller computational cost. Hence it is the recommended method to use in practice.

    Notes: Abstract An edgel extraction algorithm is presented that requires only a single pass of the image. This algorithm determines the connectivity of all edgels found and also finds all junctions. Thresholding with hysteresis is used within the routine to improve the connectivity of the found edges.

    Notes: This paper examines the implications of electronic business-to-business intermediaries for the buyer-supplier interface. Innovations in electronic commerce have a key role to play in managing inter-organisational networks of supply chain members. The evidence presented in this paper illustrates that the Internet represents a powerful technology for commerce and communication at the buyer-supplier interface. An overview is provided of the evolution of electronic commerce at the buyer-supplier interface and the typical business models that have been developed. A theoretical framework is proposed, based on the inter-organisational relationships paradigm. A number of case studies are presented which examine the role of electronic intermediaries at the buyer-supplier interface. It is shown how the inter-organisational relationships paradigm is an effective means of evaluating the buyer-supplier interface in an electronic B2B environment. The application of the framework is discussed in relation to the three case studies and the implications for practitioners are highlighted.

    Notes: Discusses a hybrid computer-based system designed to assist companies in the make or buy decision, which is arguably the most fundamental component of manufacturing strategy. The system employs both case-based reasoning (CBR) and decision support system components including multi-attribute analysis (MAA) and sensitivity analysis. As part of the development process, interviews were conducted with managers in ten multinational companies in order to determine current make or buy practice and elicit opinions on how the decision-making process would be enhanced. The consensus was that a formal structure was needed along with computerised support at various stages in the process. The model was developed conceptually from the analysis of these interviews with procurement managers and also through a thorough literature survey. The next stage was to implement the most important components of the system to enable feedback from procurement managers in one of the multinationals first interviewed. The results indicate that the system supports the procurement function in evaluating the make or buy decision and has led to enhanced communication with suppliers as well as within the multi-functional procurement team.

    Notes: Attempts to show that environmental issues are becoming increasingly important as an attribute of the quality of goods and services. However, although firms appreciate the importance of good environmental practices there is a lack of awareness of how this can best be achieved, particularly in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Suggests that one way to enhance understanding among SMEs is to consider environmental responsibility as part of the quality attributes which customers may expect from suppliers. Presents a quality profiling approach which is based on customers' perceptions, which should assist an SME to: establish the importance of environmental factors with respect to other attributes in the purchasing decision; and evaluate the organization's performance on key product/service attributes relative to its main rivals. Discusses the role of governments and other bodies in relation to encouraging a proactive environmental approach among SMEs.

    Notes: Several formal methodologies are proposed for evaluating prospective suppliers. Three popular methods for supplier performance evaluation appear in the literature: categorical, weighted point and cost ratio. However, these techniques have a number of disadvantages associated with them and an alternative approach is suggested which applies dimensional analysis to selecting prospective suppliers. An international purchasing office (IPO), located in Hong Kong, has been applying the dimensional analysis approach to evaluating suppliers based in Hong Kong and China. Using the IPO as a case study, the article discusses the benefits of this approach over the traditional assessment methods and how it can be used to measure not only supplier performance, but also the contribution to the purchasing relationship from the buyer organisation.

    Notes: The objective of this paper is to examine changes in the European car industry and in particular the impact these changes are having on the car makers and their relationships with their suppliers. With excess production capacity and the poor outlook for car sales, the European car industry requires structural changes to balance supply and demand. In an effort to address these problems, the car makers are re-appraising their relations with their suppliers. They are now pursuing more intensive and interactive relationships with their suppliers, collaborating in areas such as new product development, supplier development, and information sharing on a range of issues. However, there is evidence to illustrate that there is a lack of trust between the car makers and their suppliers. It is argued that if the European car makers are to compete globally then there will have to be more trust and co-operation between the car makers and the components industry.
