Notes: Summary This study presents the results of a set of tests for the determination of the thermal conductivity coefficient of samples extracted from boards of Insulation Corkboard (ICB) withdrawn from the usual production of the seven portuguese factories. These tests were carried out as a part of an interlaboratorial study integrated in the standardization program for cork of the sub-comission 4 of The National Technical Committee of Standardization (CT 16), in which participated the Cork Technological Centre (CTCOR), the National Laboratory of Civil Enginneering (LNEC) and the National Institute of Engineering and Industrial Technology (INETI). The purpose of this study aimed to contribute to the definition of the “declared value” of this thermal property to be included in the future European Standard (EN) specifying the characteristics of ICB for thermal insulating of buildings which is in preparation in the 88Th Technical Committee of The European Committee of Standardization CEN/TC-88 (CEN 1995). In view of the results, the declared value of thermal conductivity proposed was 0.045 W/m. °C.

Notes: Abstract The studies of Azores seismicity generally show shocks with either normal faulting or right-lateral strike-slip along the ESE direction, compatible with a eastward relative motion of the Eurasian (EU) relative to the African (AF) plate. However, the 1 January 1980 earthquake was interpreted as a clear left-lateral strike-slip shock along the N150E direction. This pattern is difficult to explain in terms of the relative motion between the EU, AF and North American (NA) plates: all available models for the present day movement of this triple junction fail to explain the regional variability in the stress conditions of the area. Here we present data from a 34-day long Ocean Bottom Seismograph array deployment. We show that the seismicity is distributed along a band aligned with the island chain itself, and is concentrated along several faults with an approximate N150E strike, cutting the Azores plateau in all the area covered by the OBS network. The combination of these new results with other geophysical data permits us to conclude that the tectonic setting of the Azores plateau is characterised by the existence of two sets of faults, in the N120E and N150E directions, defining several crustal blocks, whose relative motion accommodates the interaction of the three megaplates. The deformation of these tectonic blocks is probably driven by the shear between the EU and AF plates. This model explains well the spatial variability of the stress conditions in the Azores domain, the combination of dextral and sinistral strike slip mechanisms and the observed seismotectonics of the Azores islands.

Notes: The structure of peregrine (1), a norditerpenoid alkaloid isolated from Delphinium peregrinum var. elongatum BOISS., was revised on the basis of the 1H-COSY, HMQC, HMBC, and ROESY NMR spectra and of the X-ray analysis of its parent alcohol 2. Some of the 13C-NMR resonances of 1 and the related alkaloids peregrine alcohol (2), 14-O-acetylperegrine (3), bicoloridine (4), bicoloridine alcohol (5), 6-O-acetylbicolorine (6), bicolorine (7), and 14-O-acetylbicolorine (8), were also reassigned.

Description: An edited version of this paper was published by AGU. Copyright (2010) American Geophysical Union.
Description: An eleven‐month deployment of 25 ocean bottom seismometers provides an unprecedented opportunity to study low‐magnitude local earthquakes in the complex transpressive plate boundary setting of the Gulf of Cadiz, known for the 1755 Lisbon earthquake and tsunami. 36 relocated earthquakes (ML 2.2 to 4.8) concentrate at 40– 60 km depth, near the base of the seismogenic layer in ∼140 Ma old oceanic mantle lithosphere, and roughly align along two perpendicular, NNE‐SSW and WNWESE striking structures. First motion focal mechanisms indicate compressive stress for the cluster close to the northern Horseshoe fault termination which trends perpendicular to plate convergence. Focal mechanisms for the second cluster near the southern termination of the Horseshoe fault indicate a strike‐slip regime, providing evidence for present‐day activity of a dextral shear zone proposed to represent the Eurasia‐Africa plate contact. We hypothesize that regional tectonics is characterized by slip partitioning.
