Description / Table of Contents: Abstract Experimental determination of the inner wall temperature of a transpiration cooled tube surrounding a plasma arc is very difficult. This temperature, however, can be calculated from simply measurable physical quantities. The method is explained and results are discussed.

Notes: Abstract An analysis is made for the influence of the moving condensate film on the mass transfer rate from the gas-vapor mixture to the condensate. The governing energy and mass conservation equations are solved using the Crank-Nicholson method. The results show that the moving condensate film may have a considerable effect on condensation mass transfer.

Notes: A flow visualization technique which utilized a photochromic dye in solution was introduced by Popovich and Hummel in 1967. The dye was activated along narrow trace lines by passing sharply focused beams from an ultraviolet light source through the solution. The movement of the dye traces were recorded by high-speed cinematography and velocities were found from analysis of the resulting pictures. Two variations to this basic method are described. These permit more accurate velocity measurements to be made in certain liquid systems where test volumes are small or near physical barriers, and where the flow is two dimensional or is time dependent. Manufacture of a suitable dye and construction of an inexpensive pulse laser which may be used as an ultraviolet light source are discussed.

Notes: Conclusion An experimental method for determining the momentum flux on a drop for a nozzle with an arbitrary fluid velocity profile at the exit has been described. I t was observed that the variation of drop volume with flow rate can differ some-what from that conceived in previous drop formation models, in that drop volume does not necessarily vary smoothly with flow rate. High-speed motion pictures of drop formation and detachment show that the drop oscillates as it grows. I t is believed that this oscillation is related to the observed unsteady variation of drop volume with flow rate.

Notes: Abstract The laminar flowfield in a rectangular channel immediately upstream of a hot film gradient probe with two parallel films was investigated in the range of Reynolds number Re pr= 6 to 95, with the Reynolds number based on the probe diameter and the local flow velocity. For this study a photochromic dye flow visualization technique was used. The results show that the smaller the Reynolds number Re prthe larger the influence of the probe is upon the flowfield. No distinct influence of the probe location relative to the channel walls on the flow deceleration process immediately upstream of the probe was observed.

Notes: Abstract The McAllister theory of viscosity for liquid mixtures was modified to account for temperature dependencies other than that proposed by the Eyring model. The resulting equation was tested with numerous experimental data of binary and ternary mixtures, and proved to correlate mixture viscosities very well.

Notes: Abstract The linear stability theory is used to study stability characteristics of laminar condensate film flow down an arbitrarily inclined wall. A critical Reynolds number exists above which disturbances will be amplified. The magnitude of the critical Reynolds number is in all practical situations so small that a laminar gravity-induced condensate film can be expected to be unstable. Several stabilizing effects are acting on the film flow; at an inclined wall these effects are due to surface tension, gravity and condensation mass transfer.

Notes: Abstract Experimentally determined thermal contact resistance (conductance) data are compared with predictions based on two different theories. One of the theories assumes elastic contact, while the other theory is based on the assumption of plastic contact. Even though the high plastic index calculated for the contacting surface suggested that contacting asperities would deform plastically, the experimental data generally agree better with the predictions obtained using the elastic contact model than with the predictions obtained using the plastic contact model.
