Notes: Summary. Collective choice problems on sets in ${\frak R}_+^n$ arise naturally in economics. Such problems have been extensively studied both in the theory of revealed preferences (Peters and Wakker, 1991) and in axiomatic bargaining theory under the assumption of convexity. However, our knowledge of collective choice functions on non-convex problems is still patchy. In this paper I study the existence and characterisation of continuous choice functions on the domain $\Gamma$ of comprehensive problems. The main result completely characterises rational choice functions that are continuous and satisfy Weak Pareto Optimality: they form the class of Monotone Path Choice Functions on $\Gamma$ . I also show that any discontinuous rational and weakly Pareto optimal choice function must be non- anonymous.

Notes: We propose a new theory of choice between lotteries, which combines an 'economic' view of decision making - based on a rational, though incomplete, ordering - with a 'psychological' view - based on heuristics. This theory can explain observed violations of EU theory, namely all cyclical patterns of choice as well as violations of independence.

Notes: We propose a novel approach to modelling time preferences, based on a cognitive shortcoming of human decision makers: the perception of future events becomes increasingly `blurred' as the events are pushed further in time. Our model explains behavioural `anomalies' such as preference reversal and cyclical choice.

Notes: The objective of this study was to determine the differences between maize (Zea mays L.) and sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) in the pattern of leaf chlorophyll content and spectral properties occurring with leaf ageing and senescence.Chlorophyll accumulation and leaf spectral properties were determined in growing and senescing leaves of field-grown maize and sunflower hybrids. Measurements were taken at intervals of 3–4 days during the rapid stem elongation phase on leaf 11 for maize and leaf 17 for sunflower. Reflectance (R) and transmittance (T) spectra of adaxial surfaces of attached leaves were measured using a LI-COR 1800 hand-held spectroradiometer with an external integrating sphere, over the wavelength range from 400 to 100 nm. Absorptance (A) was computed as: A = 100-(R + T).In the growing leaf, chlorophyll content increased until full leaf expansion, while no changes in A and T were recorded. After full leaf expansion was reached, chlorophyll dropped from 514.3 to 328.0 μmol m−2 in maize and from 527.2 to 164.1 μmol m−2 in sunflower. Absorptance in the PAR region declined about 5% in maize and about 11% in sunflower and T increased about 1% in maize and 7% in sunflower. Within the PAR region, variations in A and T were recorded only in the green band (520–600 nm) for maize and in the green and red (630–690 nm) bands for sunflower. There were differences between maize and sunflower in the relative timing of the decrease in chlorophyll content and A in senescing leaves: maize retained chlorophyll longer than sunflower and A declined more slowly in maize as a result of the different length of leaf maturity and senescing stages.

Notes: Abstract In this paper we deal with the extension of Nash bargaining theory to nonconvex problems. By focussing on the Social Welfare Ordering associated with a bargaining solution, we characterize the symmetric Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS). Moreover, we obtain a unified method of proof of recent characterization results for the asymmetric single-valued NBS and the symmetric multivalued NBS, as well as their extensions to different domains.

Notes: Abstract. Nash (1950) considered a domain of convex bargaining problems. We analyse domains including, or even consisting of, finite problems and provide various characterisations of the Nash Bargaining Solution (NBS). In particular, we extend Kaneko's (1980) results.

Notes: Abstract. The Nash Bargaining Solution is characterised by using the new axiom of Maximal Symmetry in place of Nash's Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives and Symmetry. This axiom expresses the idea that a fair arbitrator should treat symmetric alternatives in the same way, subject to the feasibility constraint. An advantage of the proposed characterisations is that they are valid on a wide set of domains, in particular domains including, or consisting of, non-convex problems.

Notes: Abstract This paper provides an ethical intepretation of the Nash choice rule. In a setting in which (cardinal) utilities are interpersonally comparable, this procedure is characterised by an impartiality requirement and by the assumption that choices are not responsive to the agents' relative ability to convert resources into utility.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary This investigation considers the effects of free convection on the laminar flow of water through a circular duct having essentially constant wall heat transfer rate per unit length of the duct and circumferentially uniform wall temperature. The effect of the Reynolds and Rayleigh number variations on heat transfer results has been analysed for both horizontal and inclined pipe. The experiment has covered the range of the inlet Reynolds number from 200 to 2300, and of the Rayleigh number from 6,000 to 70,000. The effect of pipe inclination has been investigated for slope angle values up to 60°, with laminar ascending flow.

Description: Oxidation of cysteine thiols by physiological reactive oxygen species (ROS) initiates thermogenesis in brown and beige adipose tissues. Cellular selenocysteines, where sulfur is replaced with selenium, exhibit enhanced reactivity with ROS. Despite their critical roles in physiology, methods for broad and direct detection of proteogenic selenocysteines are limited. Here we developed a mass spectrometric method to interrogate incorporation of selenium into proteins. Unexpectedly, this approach revealed facultative incorporation of selenium as selenocysteine or selenomethionine into proteins that lack canonical encoding for selenocysteine. Selenium was selectively incorporated into regulatory sites on key metabolic proteins, including as selenocysteine-replacing cysteine at position 253 in uncoupling protein 1 (UCP1). This facultative utilization of selenium was initiated by increasing cellular levels of organic, but not inorganic, forms of selenium. Remarkably, dietary selenium supplementation elevated facultative incorporation into UCP1, elevated energy expenditure through thermogenic adipose tissue, and protected against obesity. Together, these findings reveal the existence of facultative protein selenation, which correlates with impacts on thermogenic adipocyte function and presumably other biological processes as well.
