Abstract The solution of the problem of the stress-strain state (SSS) of a flywheel rotor by numerical methods is considered. An algorithm is presented for finding the SSS of a rotating multilayer ring of variable height as the basic element of the flywheel. Methods and sequence of calculation of design variants of a flywheel rotor at the draft design stage, along with calculation of dynamic characteristics, are presented. The coefficient of subcritical operating conditions of the rotor is introduced. It is shown that calculation for strength of electromagnetic energy storage devices can be carried out at the draft design stage by using analytical formulas for a rotating multilayer ring.
