Notes: In coeliac disease (CD) there is an inflammatory status of the intestinal mucosa because of a high expression of proinflammatory mediators. The nuclear protein poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP-1) has been implicated in the initial inflammatory response by modulating transcription of inflammation-related genes. The aim of this work was to investigate the role of PARP-1 gene promoter region haplotypes in relation to coeliac disease susceptibility. We analysed a coeliac population consisting of a case-control panel with 120 CD patients and 311 healthy blood donors. A CA microsatellite, as haplotype-defining variant of the whole PARP-1 promoter, was typed using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method combined with fluorescence technology. We considered two promoter haplotypes: A defined by short CA alleles (83–87 bp) and B defined by long CA alleles (89–101 bp). Haplotype A was significantly increased within the coeliac patients group (P = 0.007 OR 1.6 95%CI 1.12–2.35). Additionally, we observed a significant dose effect, showing homozygous individuals for haplotype A higher risk for CD susceptibility (P = 0.007, OR 1.79 95%CI 1.14–2.82). Our results provide the first evidence that PARP-1 haplotypes are related with coeliac disease susceptibility.

Notes: We measured the conversion efficiency of laser pulse energy into keV x rays from a variety of solid planar targets and a Xe gas puff target irradiated using a high average power Nd:glass slab laser capable of delivering 13 ns full width at half-maximum pulses at up to 20 J at 1.053 μm and 12 J at 0.53 μm. Targets were chosen to optimize emission in the 10–15 A(ring) wavelength band, including L-shell emission from materials with atomic numbers in the range Z=24–30 and M-shell emission from Xe (Z=54). With 1.053 μm a maximum conversion of 11% into 2π sr was measured from solid Xe targets. At 0.527 μm efficiencies of 12%–18%/(2π sr) were measured for all of the solid targets in the same wavelength band. The x-ray conversion efficiency from the Xe gas puff target was considerably lower, at about 3%/(2π sr) when irradiated with 1.053 μm. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The generation and annealing of fixed positive and fixed negative charges are discussed in the context of neutral hole and neutral electron traps. The analyses are based on the results of experimental studies involving hydrogen ambient atmosphere annealing and/or electron injection of gate insulators in insulated gate field-effect transistors which have been damaged by 1.5-keV x rays. It is found, for example, that annihilation of fixed positive charge either by hydrogen annealing, or by electron injection results in indistinguishable "repair'' of this defect, indicating that such repair probably involves loss of an electron by the hydrogen to an E'γ center. It is postulated that a new electron spin resonance (ESR) center representing fixed negative charge, Nn, which is derived from a large cross-section neutral electron trap might be detected under the proper conditions. Since large cross-section neutral traps (10−15 cm2) are known to exist in significant concentrations in insulators damaged with ionizing radiation, but have not been correlated to any structural defect detected using ESR, it would appear that they are not paramagnetic.

Notes: We report on the photorefractive properties of thermally stable polymer composites based on the dye 2, N, N-dihexylamino-7-dicyanomethylidenyl-3,4,5,6,10-pentahydronaphthalene. At an applied field of 50 V/μm, we have achieved a dynamic range of Δn=8.5×10−3 and a net two-beam coupling gain of 202 cm−1. The diffraction efficiency peaks at an applied field of 28 V/μm, giving an external diffraction efficiency of 71%. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report on light scattering measurements in guest/host photorefractive polymers doped with different polar dyes as a function of temperature and sample composition. Crystallization processes of the polar dye are found to follow a nucleation and growth mechanism. The structure and melting point of the polar dye, the storage temperature, and the amount of plasticizer are shown to exert a major influence on the shelf lifetime of the samples. New composites with high efficiency and long shelf lifetime are presented. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.
