Abstract:
Notes:
Summary A survey is given of the technique for spectrochemical analyses of igneous rocks, sediments, and ores applied in the geochemical department of the geological survey of Sweden. The pulverized samples to be analysed are divided into three parts: one for the determination of the major constituents, one for the minor constituents and one for special analyses. The determination of the major constituents is a combination of a careful chemical preparation in order to homogenize the samples and a subsequent spectrographic analysis by means of methods depending on the elements to be determined: a high tension spark in general and for the alkalies the air-acetylene flame method (Lundegårdh). The minor constituents are usually determined by means of the carbon arc cathode layer method (Mannkopff-Peters), either in its primordial form or somewhat modified. In some cases, for example gold analyses, a solution of the sample is evaporated on a heated carbon rod serving as anode and the spectrum is emitted by means of a d. c. interrupted arc (Pfeilsticker).
