The title compound (-CF2-SF3)2 (2) is prepared from (-CF2-SCl)2 (1) and F2 at -90 °C in 83 % yield. Reaction of 2 with CsF and TASF yields Cs[(-CF2-SF3)2F] (8), TAS [(-CF2SF3)2F] (9) and (TAS)2[(-CF2-SF4)2] (10). Fluoride-ion abstraction yields [(-CF2SF2)2F] [AsF6] (6), BF3-catalysed solvolysis in SO2 gives [-CF2-S(O)F]2 (4), and CsF-catalysed oxidation with F2 leads to the previously reported (-CF2-SF5)2 (11). Ab initio calculations of the molecular structures of 2 and the related methane derivative F2C(SF3)2 are reported.
