    Notes: Summary Allocation strategies in which a limited resource is apportioned among alternative activities are applicable to diverse structural, genetical and behavioral topics, including male versus female investments. In a model of sex allocation strategies, the absolute fitnesses of individuals are calculated by summing the production of male and female gametes or offspring, each weighted by its reproductive value. The ESS is obtained by examining the fitness advantage of one phenotype over another. An analogous method is used to obtain a general model of allocation strategies that incorporates some widespread features. Allocation strategies are affected by the sizes and shapes of the reward curves, stochastic factors, and constraints on the allocations permitted. A number of parallels among diverse types of allocation strategies, including the occurrence of fixed, conditional and mixed strategies, and matching rules, are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Algebraic models of gynodioecy show that the effects on the equilibrium sex ratio of the relative survival and seed production of the sexes and of inbreeding of male-fertile plants are identical for all genic modes of inheritance, provided that different genotypes among male-fertile plants (or among females) do not differ in average fitness. The effects of three modes of inbreeding on equilibrium sex ratios are examined. If there is competition between self- and cross-fertilization of male-fertile individuals, a stable sexual dimorphism can be maintained by an outbreeding advantage of females if both the proportion of cross-fertilized seeds among those borne on male-fertile individuals,t, and the inbreeding depression (fitness inbred/outbred seeds),i, are less than one half. A lower frequency of females is obtained for the same values oft andi if self-fertilization precedes cross-fertilization. If self-fertilization follows cross-fertilization, gynodioecy cannot be maintained by an outbreeding advantage of females. When the sex phenotypes of gynodioecious populations are determined by cytoplasmic inheritance, females need only a slight advantage over males in survival, ovule production or outbreeding to persist at equilibrium. When determined by nuclear genes, androdioecy can be maintained by greater fecundity or a higher survival rate of males than of female-fertile plants, but not by an outbreeding advantage. Androdioecy cannot be maintained with cytoplasmic inheritance of sex. The models suggest explanations for the more frequent occurrence of gynodioecy than of andrdioecy, the high frequency of gynodioecy in Hawaii and New Zealand, and the origin of gynodioecy from hermaphrodite but not from monoecious ancestors.

    Notes: Abstract Six plants of a self-incompatible population ofLeavenworthia çrassa were grown from seed collected in nature and cross-pollinated in all combinations. The incompatibility relationships between sibs were determined in eleven of the F1 families. A one-locus sporophytic incompatibility system was established. None of the parents was homozygous at the S locus. At least five, and possibly all six, of the parents did not share an S allele. Only one pair of alleles was shown to have different interactions in the pollen and stigmata. The identity and expression of the S alleles were determined in six families. Eight pairs of alleles were independently expressed in both the pollen grains and the stigmata. Sixteen pairs of alleles showed dominance of one allele over the other in the pollen grains or the stigmata or both. F1 plants of two crosses between different self-incompatible races were self-incompatible. F1 plants of six crosses between self-incompatible and self-compatible races were self-incompatible; in five of the families, the frequency of pseudo-compatibility was higher than in the self-incompatible parent. Self-incompatible hybrids from a cross between a self-incompatible and a self-compatible population provide a method for rapidly determining allelic interactions in plants with a sporophytic incompatibility system.

    Notes: The ultraviolet spectra of aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol have been examined with a view to identifying the chromophores present. The spectrum may be modified by reduction with hydrogen over Raney nickel at room temperature, which is specific for ethylenic unsaturation, and by reduction with sodium borohydride, which is specific for carbonyl groups. An analysis of the resulting spectra supports the proposal that the ultraviolet absorption of aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solutions arises from polyene-carbonyl chromophores of empirical formulas: —(CH=CH)n—CO—, where n may vary from 0 to 3.

The disputed occurrence of heterostyly in S. African species ofBauhinia (Leguminosae),Cleome (Capparaceae) andAneilema (Commelinaceae), and inAgelaea (Connaraceae) is discussed.
