    Notes: The seismogenesis of a double seismic zone, in particular the lower layer of a double seismic zone, has not been adequately explained in the literature. On the basis of seismic data and geothermal structures along three well-studied cross-sections in the Kuril-Kamchatka and Japan subduction zones, we investigate the temperature/pressure conditions associated with seismogenic structures of the double seismic zones. the corresponding T/P loci seem to suggest that earthquakes observed in the lower layer and in the lower part (below approximately 130 ± 20 km) of the top layer of a double seismic zone were caused by metastable phase transition-a mechanism similar to that responsible for deep-focus earthquakes only at lower temperature/pressure conditions. Under this hypothesis, the wedge-shaped configuration of a double seismic zone is interpreted to represent the loci of the kinetic boundary of the phase transition. According to theoretical/experimental studies and the constraints imposed by our observations, a likely candidate for such a phase transition is the metastable Al-rich enstatite decomposing into the assemblage of Al-poor enstatite plus garnet. Earthquakes in the upper part of the top layer were most probably due to conventional mechanisms such as dehydration of subducted materials and/or facies change from basalt to eclogite. That the top layer involves more than one seismogenic mechanism is also implied by the distinct behaviour of seismicity in the vicinity of 130 ± 20 km. Because the presence of deviatoric stress is critical to the reaction rate of a metastable phase transition, it is inferred that single seismic zones are also caused by the same mechanisms, except that the implicit layer of a supposed double seismic zone is missing, due to the insufficient amount of appropriate metastable minerals or to the lack of appropriate deviatoric stresses in the source region.

    Notes: By modifying Uffen's approach, the relative melting-temperature gradients in the vicinity of the transition zone have been estimated. There is a thermodynamic relationship between the melting-temperature gradients at the triple point at which the melting curve is intercepted by a solid-solid phase transition. On the basis of the results of these studies, it is concluded that the 400 km seismic discontinuity in the transition zone is consistent with a phase transition possessing a positive dT/dP slope, whereas the 670 km discontinuity is found to be consistent with either a phase transition having a negative slope or a chemical change. These conclusions have been reached independently of all previous studies that used elastic and thermal properties of the mantle and of the predicted compositions for the various parts of the mantle.

    Notes: Abstract In an attempt to better define the depths of formation of eclogitic-paragenesis diamonds from the Argyle lamproite pipe, we have employed a Laser Raman microprobe to determine the Raman peak shift of a garnet inclusion (extracted from diamond) with pressure in a diamond-anvil pressure cell. On the basis of these data, we further found that the in situ garnet inclusions record near-atmospheric pressures within the limits of experimental uncertainty. Data on the compressibility and thermal expansivity of both diamond and garnet were used to define a P-T curve for the entrapment of garnet in diamond. A window within the range 47 kbar at 1100° C (150 km) to 93 kbar at 1500° C (280 km) for the formation of syngenetic garnet inclusions in diamond is defined by the intersection of the continental geotherm with the diamond-graphite boundary and the entrapment curve determined in the present study. This P-T window is consistent with the constraints imposed by other petrological studies of co-existing inclusions. Most of eclogitic-paragenesis diamonds from Argyle are estimated to have formed at a depth less than 250 km, if temperature estimates from petrological study are used.
