Notes: Cutting tests had been done on the Austempered Ductile Iron (ADI) with ceramic cuttingtools. The wear shape of the cutting tool’s surface was observed by the Scanning ElectronMicroscope (SEM). The micro-wear area of the tools was analyzed with energy spectrum. Study onwear shape and wear mechanisms were done when infeed cutting ADI. The result shows that: thecutting speed is an important factor to the tool wear when infeed cutting ADI with CC650 tool, andwith the increase of the cutting speed, the wear value of cutting tool increases obviously. The flankof cutting tool (CC650) has wear land of definite width during cutting, and shows obvious abrasivewear. The crate wear shape of rake face is almost joined to major cutting edge, it is different fromthe typical crate shape of rake face. Elements Fe, Si and Mg in ADI material diffuses to the surfaceof cutting tools (CC650) after cutting, the diffusion exacerbates the wear of cutting tools, and thediffusion degree of rake face is larger than that of flank, abrasive wear, adhesive wear and diffusivewear is chief reasons for tools wear

Notes: Water contaminated by heavy metals remains a serious environmental and public healthproblem. The toxic effects of heavy metals on the biosphere have been demonstrated by a number ofstudies. Since the main sources of heavy metals for humans are water and food, the monitoring of theheavy metals content in natural water is of paramount importance. Diverse technologies have beenused to reduce the contents of heavy metals in water. Recently, adsorption methods have been widelyused because of their low cost. The novel nano-water-purifying material used in our work iscomposed of AlO(OH) nanoparticles loaded onto glass fibre and supported by active carbon felt. TheAl nano-powder starting material, was prepared using an electric explosive technique. The productswere characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope, transmission electronmicroscope, and BET techniques. It was found that the particles consisted of AlO(OH) nanofibres ofpure boehmite structure. They exhibited a surface area of 431.7 m2 / g. The composite material wasfound to be effective in removing cadmium from dilute aqueous solutions and could find broadapplication in heavy metal removal

Notes: In this paper, Al2O3/TiO2 coatings via thermal spray approach using three differentfeedstock powders, i.e., (a) reconstituted nanosized Al2O3/TiO2 feedstock powders, (b)reconstituted nanosized Al2O3/TiO2/ZrO2/CeO2 feedstock powders and (c) conventionalAl2O3/TiO2 feedstock powders are described. Effects of different powder types and variousplasma spray conditions on the density, microhardness and crack resistance, especially on theabrasive wear behavior of the coatings have been evaluated. The result showed that the coatingssprayed using different feedstock powders exhibit different abrasive wear behavior withchanging the plasma spray conditions. The coatings sprayed using the reconstituted nanosizedAl2O3/TiO2/ZrO2/CeO2 feedstock powders showed a significantly improved wear resistancecompared to the coatings sprayed using reconstituted nanosized Al2O3/TiO2 feedstock powdersor conventional Al2O3/TiO2 feedstock powders. The wear mechanisms of the coatings werediscussed

Notes: Using synchrotron radiation as a continuum light source, the absolute photoabsorption and direct dissociation cross sections of C2 H2 in the 1530–1930 A(ring) region have been measured at 295 and 155 K. In comparison with cross sections obtained at room temperature, the cross sections at absorption peaks typically increase by 10%–40% while those at absorption valleys decrease by as much as 30% at 155 K. Further, the absorption band profiles become narrower as the gas temperature decreases. In the presently studied wavelength region, there are at least three electronic states, namely, the A˜ 1 Au , the B˜ 1 Bu , and a continuum. Using the present low temperature data we have constructed the repulsive potential energy curve of the direct dissociation state according to the Franck–Condon principle. The potential energy curve thus constructed can be more accurate than that constructed by using room temperature cross section data because only the absorption cross section from the ν'=0 level contributes. The present cross section data have also been used in the analysis of oscillator strength distribution.

Notes: The effects of geometrical confinement on the molecular dynamics of liquid toluene in porous sol–gel silica glasses have been studied by the NMR method. The NMR deuteron spin–lattice relaxation times for toluene-d8, ortho-toluene-d1, and para-toluene-d1 were measured as a function of temperature for bulk and confined liquids. The rotational diffusion tensors for overall, internal, and anisotropic rotational diffusion have been determined. The effect of geometrical confinement results in a considerable decrease of the rotational diffusion constants and leads to a lowering of the symmetry of the anisotropic rotational diffusion tensor.

Notes: A method of analyzing inhomogeneous line broadening with crystal-field theory is presented. For actinide ions with unfilled f-shells in solids, the most important contribution to line broadening of f-electron transitions is from short-range interactions with distorted lattice. Optically active curium ions are used to measure the degree of radiation damage in the vicinity of their lattice site. The radiation damage was produced by decay of distant 244Cm3+ ions. Fluorescence line narrowing (FLN) spectra show that inhomogeneous line broadening induced by α-decay of the actinide ion 244Cm3+ in single crystals of LuPO4 and YPO4 has a microscopic nature. Namely, correlation is absent between energy levels of the Cm3+ ions at different local environments. Monte Carlo simulation of lattice distortion and crystal-field calculation of Cm3+ energy levels have been conducted to provide a quantitative interpretation of the experimental results. This method should be applicable to 4f- and 3d-ions in crystalline materials with lattice distortion.

Notes: The local environment of Cm3+ in a borosilicate glass has been probed by a combination of laser spectroscopy, structural modeling, and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. The Stark splitting for the Cm f–f state transitions is significantly larger than the inhomogeneous line broadening that results from the disordered environment. As a result, the Cm optical spectrum can be fit using an effective operator Hamiltonian to obtain a set of crystal-field parameters. The fitting procedure, which requires the use of a descent-in-symmetry approach, provides a set of parameters for a best fit within tetragonal symmetry. These parameters are then linked to the local environment of Cm through exchange-charge modeling (ECM) of crystal field interactions. Cm in our borosilicate glass is best modeled with six oxygen ions with approximately tetragonal symmetry, and at an average distance of 2.31 (3) Å. The results of crystal-field modeling are supported by EXAFS results. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Myofibrils, oxidized with FeCl3/H2O2/ascorbate, exhibited an increase in carbonyls and amines, SH→SS conversion, peptide scission, myosin polymerization, and a decrease in thermal stability and gel-formation ability. Amino-acid side chains of whey-protein isolates (WPI) and soy-protein isolates (SPI) were also modified during oxidation, but the thermal stability of WPI or SPI was not significantly altered. Oxidation increased elasticity of SPI gel but not that of WPI gel. Similarly, oxidation promoted interactions of myofibrils with SPI but not with WPI, resulting in 〉 30% increases in elasticity of the myofibril/SPI composite gel over its nonoxidized control. Hence, in processed meats where oxidation occurs, the presence of soy proteins may enhance the functionality of myofibrillar proteins.
