Notes: Electrofreezing is an effect where an electrostatically charged surface in contact with a supercooled liquid or an externally applied electric field significantly enhances nucleation of the solid phase. The electrofreezing effect has been used as a tool to nucleate ice and heavy ice crystals in free-growth experiments at supercooling greater than 1.5 °C. In order to nucleate ice crystals at smaller supercooling, we describe a device which uses a combination of a thermoelectric cooler and the electrofreezing effect. This system has been used to nucleate crystals at a supercooling down to 0.1 °C, but this figure is only limited by the temperature stability of the growth medium. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We describe a cylindrical acoustic resonator which has been used for the determination of the molar concentration of a binary mixture of gases. We achieved an absolute accuracy better than 0.001 independent of the concentration or the type of gas. The practical factors limiting the accuracy are discussed in detail and their effect on the performance has been evaluated using gas samples prepared by precisely measured partial pressures. The device is routinely used to measure the concentration of 3He–4He mixtures.

Notes: We present a promising optical system and technique for detection, imaging, and visualization of minimal changes, of the order of 10−6 in refractive index, in the near field. The system is based on phase imaging of excited surface plasmons in a conducting layer in contact with a sample. This technique is shown here to be sensitive enough to image the flow of helium and argon gas in a nitrogen atmosphere. Its application to biological and chemical research is suggested. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is pointed out that multiple scattering in the specimen must affect the accuracy of the images produced in electron microscopes. A simple line of reasoning is offered which shows that, even with highly corrected lens systems, resolutions better than about 30 Å are unlikely to be produced for specimens of 1000 Å thickness. For increased resolution, thinner specimens or reflection microscopes should be used.

Notes: [Auszug] Feinberg1, discussing Klein-Gordon particles of imaginary mass (tachyons), has an argument purporting to show that no causality violation is observable. His argument is incomplete, because the "events" which he considers are the emission or absorption of single tachyons. It seems possible to ...

Notes: [Auszug] In an ensemble of volatile liquid drops, either in suspension or on a partially wetted substrate, large drops grow at the expense of smaller ones when the pressure is just above the saturated-vapour pressure. Below this critical pressure, all drops evaporate, with the smallest drops evaporating ...

Notes: Abstract The damping of helicon waves in indium was measured under nonlocal conditions with a variable angle between the wave vectorq and the magnetic field. In contrast to the predictions of the free-electron theory, the damping was not a monotonic function of the angle and exhibits considerable structure, which is attributed to minima in the Landau damping for certain orientations of the magnetic field. Minima in the damping are to be expected for such field directions as give rise to cyclotron orbits having a substantial number of electron states with orbital velocities perpendicular toq. In simple situations the critical orientations of the magnetic field may be deduced from a given Fermi surface by a geometrical construction. The construction has been extended to indium, and the tipping angles found are in reasonable agreement with the experiment.

Notes: Abstract Crystals grown from 2.1% and 9.3% solutions of3 He in4He were observed in a cryostat with optical access from two orthogonal directions (above and from the side). Video films of dynamic processes were recorded at temperatures between 0.5K and 1.8K. Facetted melting of crystals (in contrast with rounded melting which is the general case) was observed below 0.75K. This is in accordance with previous experiments which showed a higher3He concentration along the edges of the crystal. We also recorded morphological growth instabilities of the 9.3% b.c.c. crystals. In the temperature region below about 0.9K where the latent heat is negative no dendritic growth was observed, which we interpret as resulting from opposing effects of temperature and concentration gradients.

Notes: The residual resistance of high-purity copper can be greatly reduced if the metal is annealed in oxygen at a temperature just below its melting point. The effect is well known and has been used in many low-temperature investigations of the electronic properties of pure copper. We have carried out electrical and magnetic measurements which confirm that the effect is due to oxidation of residual Fe impurities in the copper, but in addition the formation of macroscopic particles of Fe3O4 is a necessary condition for success of the method. The macroscopic precipitation was discovered at Fe impurity levels down to 1 ppm. As a result of freezing out the contribution of Fe to the residual resistance, a minimum figure can be deduced for the resistivity contribution of free Fe impurities, and this figure is not in agreement with values deduced in earlier works. Resistance measurements were made with a superconducting galvanometer and magnetic measurements by the Faraday method.

Notes: We describe a new optical interferometric technique which we have applied to 3He-4He liquid mixtures in the phase separation region. The formation and slow propagation of a concentration front is observed when the phase separation equilibrium is disturbed by sudden heating. The phenomenon is analyzed in terms of a concentration-dependent diffusion constant, and the results indicate critical behavior of the diffusion constant on the normal side of the lambda line. The application of the optical method to studies of interphase surface tension and crystallization is also indicated.
