Description: Data archived here are the external iron input data and model output data discussed in a paper entitled "Slowly sinking particles underlie dissolved iron transport across the Pacific Ocean" submitted to Global Biogeochemical Cycles. The model used in this study was developed by coupling Regional Ocean Modeling System (Shchepetkin and McWilliams, 2005) and Biogeochemical Elemental Cycling model (Moore et al., 2013). The model covers the whole North Pacific Ocean. The model horizontal resolution was set to 1/4° mesh. The external iron input data are iron fluxes due to atmospheric deposition and dissolution from seabed sediments. The model output data are dissolved iron concentrations simulated by the model and were only presented for the data in the intermediate layer (26.6-27.4 sigma-theta divided by 0.02 sigma-theta). The simulated data were regridded 1° mesh to reduce the size of the data. The model was calculated for 100 years and the simulated dissolved iron concentration are in quasi-steady state. For more details about the individual archived data, please refer to README.pdf included in the data. Reference Shchepetkin, A. F., & McWilliams, J. C. (2005). Notes: Abstract Applications of the theory of energy stability to problems in nonlinear convection are presented. Many topics are reviewed and examples of thermal, thermohaline and bio-convection are included. Specific sections address generalised energy methods, convection in a half-space, electrodynamic convection, surface tension driven convection, time-dependent flows such as gravity modulated convection and other topics.

Notes: Summary This paper discusses the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability for the interface between a visous and an inviscid fluid. The incipient boundary layer is modelled as a two dimensional viscous interface.

Notes: Abstract The propagation of acceleration-temperature waves in a rigid heat conductor is investigated. The theory employed allows temperature to travel with a finite wavespeed, and the full nonlinear theory is analysed. It is shown that various types of behaviour are possible for the amplitude of the wave, including one for which the amplitude becomes infinite in a finite time. Higher order temperature waves are also briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract This work applies the theory of small deformations superposed on an exact finite solution (see Green/Zerna [2], Graham [7]) to discuss the plane strain deformation of a plate of incompressible Mooney-Rivlin material containing an almost circular hole and which is expanded by a radial pressure at this hole and uniaxial tension at infinity. As a specific example, we consider the theory as it applies to an elliptic hole of small eccentricity. The resulting differential equations are solved using Colsys [12, 13], a recent numerical technique for handling boundary value problems for families of ordinary differential equations, and graphs of hoop stress are drawn against finite extension for various values of eccentricity and uniaxial tension.

Notes: Abstract This paper discusses the propagation of discontinuities in a perfectly conducting magnetohydrodynamic fluid, the model having been proposed by P. H. Roberts [1] in the context of neutron stars. P. H. Roberts [1] obtained a stability criterion which was subsequently reproduced by B. Straughan [3] using a discontinuity analysis but in the process the resulting sixth order secular equation decomposed into a product of quadratic and quartic polynomial factors. The first section of this paper investigates the reason for this factorization and the latter sections examine the nature of the equations governing the behaviour of the discontinuity amplitudes. The presence of the magnetic field effectively makes the fluid non-isotropic and so the determination of amplitude equations is non standard although they finally prove to be of Bernoulli type.

Notes: Abstract This work explores an integral equation formulation of a generalised bowing problem incorporating air resistance and bow width. The Keller/Friedlander results are obtained as a special case. Some illustrative results are presented for a lightly damped string bowed at a point. The related integral equations are solved using Filon's method, a clever but relatively unknown algorithm for the numerical evaluation of integrals with rapidly oscillating trignometric kernels.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of acceleration waves in the nonlinear theory of thermoelasticity of Green and Lindsay [1] is investigated systematically. It is shown that two coupled waves may propagate with different finite wavespeeds. For waves entering isothermal homogeneously strained regions, explicit results are obtained for the wavespeeds and wave amplitudes, and the possibility of shock-wave formation is discussed.
