    Notes: A series of dialdehyde cellulose samples with varied aldehyde content were prepared byoxidation of bacterial cellulose with sodium periodate. The X-ray diffractometry profile showed thatthe crystallinity degree of bacterial cellulose was 66%, but that of the dialdehyde cellulose(containing 12% aldehyde ) was 56%. Thermal decomposition of these dialdehyde cellulose samplesand bacterial cellulose were studied by thermogravimetry. The decomposition of bacterial cellulosein nitrogen started at 230[removed info] and rapid weight loss occurred between 300-400[removed info]. The introduction ofdialdehyde group to bacterial cellulose resulted in significant shifts of decomposition to lowertemperature range. The decomposition of dialdehyde cellulose (12% aldehyde ) started at 180[removed info] andrapid weight loss between 200-350[removed info]. The temperature of rapidest weight loss shifted from 340[removed info] ofbacterial cellulose to 290[removed info] of the dialdehyde cellulose(12% aldehyde)

    Notes: The mechanical properties and the phase stability in yttria and ceria stabilized zirconiacontaining 0-20wt% A12O3 during aging in air (300ºC) and in water vapor (150ºC, 180ºC, 200ºC and250ºC) are investigated in this paper. It is found that water can greatly accelerate the degradation ofY-Ce-TZP. The addition of Al2O3 to Y-Ce-TZP prevents the low temperature degradation in air. AlsoAl2O3 particles can restrain the phase transformation of tetragonal to monoclinic in Y-Ce-TZP underwater vapor condition when the temperature is below 200ºC

    Notes: Experimental observations and associated scaling analyses are presented for the flow of a linearly stratified fluid past a sphere for conditions under which the wake is fully turbulent. It is shown that for internal Froude numbers Fi(approximately-less-than)2, the turbulent wake is suppressed by stratification in the immediate lee of the sphere. For Fi(approximately-greater-than)2, the normalized thickness δT/D grows as t1/3 before the wake height reaches its maximum (which takes place at Nt≈2.0), much the same as for wakes of spheres in homogeneous flow; here D is the sphere diameter, N is the buoyancy frequency, and t is the time. The normalized horizontal wake dimension γT/D, on the other hand, grows in the near wake as t1/3 for all Fi but, for Nt(approximately-greater-than)2.0, grows somewhat more rapidly as t1/2. The Strouhal number for the far-wake vortex street is measured and shown to be roughly a constant St≈0.18, independent of the Reynolds and Froude numbers. It is suggested that the frequency of the far-wake, quasi-two-dimensional vortices is established by the eddy shedding frequency of the near wake and thus is independent of stratification effects.

    Notes: The flow past a horizontally translating, streamwise oscillating sphere through a linearly stratified fluid is investigated in a series of laboratory experiments. The pertinent governing parameters are shown to be the internal Froude number Fi, the Reynolds number Re, the Keulegan–Carpenter number KC, and the normalized forcing frequency Sf. A KC against Sf regime diagram for flows at Fi=0.07 and Re=190 is developed; for these parameters the flow is approximately two dimensional in the horizontal zone, −1/2(approximately-less-than)z/D(approximately-less-than)1/2, where z is the vertical coordinate and D is the sphere diameter. Numerous flow regimes are delineated, and it is shown that the regime boundaries approximate the lines of constant u1/u0=2π(KC)(Sf), where u1 is the amplitude of the sphere oscillation and u0 is the magnitude of the mean background flow. Vortex shedding occurs for the entire range of experiments at these Fi, Re values. Lock-on of the shedding frequency to the sphere oscillation frequency occurs for u1/u0(approximately-greater-than)0.1. Flows at large Fi are shown to exhibit three-dimensional motions in the near wake, and, owing to stratification, exhibit vertical collapse at a certain distance downstream. The far wake develops into a horizontal vortex street pattern for all flows when stratification is present. At large Fi, Re combinations, turbulent patches are found in the wake. The inverse normalized streamwise distance between shed vortices (an effective Strouhal number) is shown to scale as Sf, independent of KC. Measurements of the horizontal separation angles and times for the collapse of the vertical structure are also presented.

    Notes: Abstract Internal waves generated by the turbulent wake of a sphere travelling horizontally through a linearly stratified fluid were studied using shadowgraph and particle-streak photography. The Reynolds and internal Froude number ranges considered were 2,000 ≤ Re ≤ 12,900 and 2.0 ≤ Fi ≤ 28.0, respectively. Two quite distinct flow regimes based on the structure of the turbulent wake were identified. In one, the wake is characterized by “large-scale coherent structures”. In the other, the wake, as viewed on a side-view shadowgraph, grows in a roughly symmetric fashion to a maximum height and then collapses slowly; such flows are termed the “smallscale structures” regime. Wave lengths and maximum wave heights of the internal waves were measured as functions of Nt and Fi, where N is the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and t the time. It was found that the wave lengths scale well with the streamwise dimension of the spiralling coherent structures. The maximum amplitude of the internal waves were found to scale with the vertical dimension of the turbulent wake, upon varying the internal Froude number.

    Notes: Plasma-sprayed hydroxyapatite coating on metal substrate has been prepared, two kinds of post-treatment methods have been used: (1) Heating in air at 650°C for 30 min, (2) Heating in water vapor at 125°C, 0.15Mpa for 6 hours. XRD showed that the nanocrystals of HA coating increased after water vapor treated. The interfacial tensiles strength between HA and the substrate were 45.0±1.82MPa, 39.1±1.27MPa and 30.3±1.61MPa for as-received coatings, water vaportreated coatings and heated in air coatings respectively. After 3 months implant in dogs limbs, the push-out strength between implants and bone were 11.27±2.71 MPa, 11.63±3.11MPa, 23.92± 2.01MPa and 18.8±1.82 MPa for pure Ti implants, as-received coating implants, water vapor treated implants and heated in air implants respectively. The results showed that the water vapor post treated HA coating have better mechanical behavior in vitro and in vivo

    Notes: The three different structures of titanium oxide film were prepared: (1) The commercial pure titanium was treated with heating in air at 700°C for half hour and gotten a dense rutile film on titanium (HS Samples); (2) The commercial pure titanium was treated by chemically treating and gotten a layer of amorphous titania gel on the Ti surface (TS Samples); (3) After chemically treating, the samples were heated in air at 700 °C for half hour, and gotten nano-particles coalescedmicroporous titanium oxide (rutile) film on titanium surface (XS sample). The dense rutile and amorphous titania gel did not induce apatite formation on their surfaces in SBF solution for 48 hours, whereas the nano-particles coalesced microporous rutile structure induced apatite formation on their surfaces. Mechanical test and histological examination were investigated after the samples implanted in dogs limbs for 3 months. The results of push-out test are 12.96, 29.48 and 35.83 MPa respectively for HS, TS and XS sample. Histological results showed that TS sample and XS sample contacted the bone directly, without any intervening fibrous tissue, and there was a fibrous tissue layer between the bone and HS samples

    Notes: The initial interactions of plasma-sprayed HA coating surface with osteoblasts wasinvestigated. Two kind of post-treatment methods were been used for HA coating: (1) Heated in air at 650oC for 30 min, (2) Heated in water vapor at 125oC, 0.15Mpa for 6 hours. The third passage rabbit osteoblasts were cultured on the HA coating plates for 24 h. The results showed: The lower dissolution rate and more surface hydroxyl groups (OH-1) group in the HA coating resulted ingreater numbers of adhered osteoblasts and higher cell activity, The post-water vapor treated HA coating have better biological behavior in vitro
