    Notes: Stream functions are dervied for a spherical droplet in creeping flow with an arbitary surface tension gradient at its interface. The stream functions are used to show theoretically that the terminal velocity is reduced and that the interfacial velocity is retarded, especially near the rear of the droplet, when a trace of surfactant is present in the exterior phase and when surface aging is controlled by diffusion.

    Notes: Abstract A thermal shock ΔT was applied to the surface of tube-sheet models of 10 percent and 33 1/3 percent ligament efficiency. By means of a thin slice cemented with a reflective cement, it was posible to obtain photo-elastically the surface-stress variation with time. By extrapolation, maximum stresses of 0.93 and 1.04 $$E_p \alpha _p - \Delta T_p /(1 - v_p )$$ were obtained at zero time for the 10 percent and 33 1/3 percent ligament efficiencies, respectively. Details of the experimental techniques employed are presented, together with the assumptions and calculations required to obtain the variation with time of the stresses at the ligament edges on the tube-shee surface. Using the effective elastic constants and stress-intensification factors for tube sheets subjected to isotropic biaxial-plane stress, thermal stresses of 1.18 and 1.31 $$E_p \alpha _p \Delta _p \Delta T_v /(1 - v_p )$$ were calculated for ligament efficiency of 10 and 33 1/3 percent, respectively. It is felt that these are uppe limits for the thermal stresses.

    Notes: Abstract The increasing number of analytical and numerical solutions for the crack-tip stress-intensity factor has greatly widened the scope of application of linear elastic fracture-mechanics technology. Experimental verification of a particular solution by elastic stress analysis is often a necessary supplement to provide the criteria for proper application to actual design problems. In this paper, it is shown that the photoelastic technique can be used to obtain rather good estimates of the stress-intensity factor for various specimen geometries and loading conditions. Treated are the following cases: wedge-opening load specimen, several notched rotating-disk configurations, and a notched pressure vessel. A sharp crack is simulated by a relatively narrow notch terminating in a root radius of 0.010 in or less. Stress distributions along the section of symmetry ahead of the notch tip are obtained using three-dimensional frozen-stress photoelasticity. The results are used to determine the stress-intensity factor, cK I , by three methods. Two of these are based on Irwin's expressions for the elastic stress field at the tip cf a crack, and the other is a result of Neuber's hyperbolic-notch analysis. Agreement, with available analytical solutions is good.

    Notes: Abstract Using two models, each containing three groups of intersecting or closely approaching holes, 18 different cases were investigated by three-dinensional frozen-stress photoelasticity. In all cases, the coplanar holes were orthogonal to the applied uniaxial tension. Included were three cases of intersecting hoes with square corners and varying hole-diameter ratios. Five cases of intersecting holes with rounded corners were studied for two hole-diameter ratios and varying corner radius. Stresses were determined for two cases where the end of one drilled hole partially penetrated another hole leaving acute corners or feathered edges at the intersection. Three types of closely approaching holes were studied: two cases in which the end of one drilled hole nearly intersected the side of an-other hole, two cases in which the ends of two drilled holes approached each other along a common axis, and four cases (called corner-approach cases) in which the ends of two drilled holes approached each other along orthogonal axes. A stress-concentration factor of 13 was found for one of the partially penetrating drilled-hole cases. The upper limit on stress-concentration factor for a very small hole intersecting a large hole in an infinite body subjected to uniaxial stress is 8.4 for metals. This factor is reduced to 5.2 as the diameters of the intersecting holes become equal. Rounding the corners on intersecting holes reduced the stress concentration by only four to seven percent. Closely approaching drilled holes results in higher stresses than fully intersecting holes when the minimum ligament width is less than ten percent of the hole diameter. Corner approach cases do not result in high stress-concentration factors as long as the ligament width is greater than the percent of the hole diameter.

    Description: One of the main applications of magnetic field measurements in boreholes is the detection of unexploded ordnance or buried utility structures like pipes or tiebacks. Even though the advantage of fully oriented magnetic vector measurements have long been recognized and could significantly reduce costs and risks, the tools used for those purposes typically measure only the total magnetic field, the vertical and horizontal components or gradients thereof. The Göttingen Bohrloch Magnetometer uses three fibre optic gyros to record its orientation and thus enables us to compute high-quality three-component magnetic vector data regardless of borehole orientation. The measurements described in this paper were run in the scientific borehole Cuxhaven Lüdingworth 1/1A, which was drilled as a part of the ‘Coastal Aquifer Test field’ project to study the dynamics of the saltwater/freshwater interface. As the drill string got stuck during drilling of the first borehole, a second hole was drilled in the immediate vicinity. The drill string lies at a depth between 80 and 114 m at a distance of only 2.5 m southeast of the borehole used for the measurements, making it an ideal target to demonstrate the benefits of vector magnetic surveys. Although the theories to calculate magnetic fields of objects with different shapes is well established and do not need to be tested, they almost exclusively include approximations of the geometry. It is not obvious whether these approximations are suited to describe real data, or whether additional effects or refinements have to be considered. We use both a simplified monopole model and a cylinder model to fit the data and are able to determine the position of the drill string within a statistical error of approximately 10 cm. Additionally, we show that the location of the drill string could not have been determined by measurements of the total field or its horizontal and vertical component alone and that those methods would require the drilling of additional boreholes to obtain an unambiguous result.
