Notes: Abstract A method for calibration and measurement with a four-wire probe is described. For each of the wires a three dimensional calibration field is determined, thus no assumption like King's law or the cosine law need to be made. The velocity vector can then be detected in a fairly large angular range (± 40°) with a numerical search algorithm. First measurements in a free jet and a confined, strongly swirling flow are presented.

Notes: Abstract A five-wire calibration and measurement technique is presented, which is an extension of the four-wire method developed by Döbbeling et al. (1990a, b). From numerical simulations of the uniqueness domain and the angular resolution it is concluded that the uniqueness domain of the quintuple technique can be expanded to a hemisphere as opposed to the four-wire techniques which are restricted to a conical domain of about 40° half angle. Measurements of the mean velocities and Reynolds stresses in a low-turbulence jet and in grid turbulence confirm and complement the results of the numerical simulations. It is thus shown that the quintuple method achieves increased accuracy in an expanded measurement range.

Notes: Abstract It is the aim of this contribution to continue our investigations on a special family of hyperbolic-type linear operators (here, for compactly supported continuous functions on IR n ) which immediately can be interpreted as concrete real-time realizations of three-layer feedforward neural networks with sigma-pi units in the hidden layer. To indicate how these results are connected with density results we start with some introductory theorems on this topic. Moreover, we take a detailed look at the complexity of the generated neural networks in order to achieve global ε-accuracy.

Notes: Abstract In the following paper, we present a brief and easily accessible introduction to the theory of neural networks under special emphasis on the rôle of pure and applied mathematics in this interesting field of research. In order to allow a quick and direct approach even for nonspecialists, we only consider three-layer feedforward networks with sigmoidal transfer functions and do not cover general multi-layer, recursive or radial-basis-function networks. Moreover, we focus our attention on density and complexity results while construction problems based on operator techniques are not discussed in detail. Especially, in connection with complexity results, we show that neural networks in general have the power to approximate certain function spaces with a minimal number of free parameters. In other words, under this specific point of view neural networks represent one of the best possible approximation devices available. Besides pointing out this remarkable fact, the main motivation for presenting this paper is to give some more mathematicians an idea of what is going on in the theory of neural networks and, perhaps, to encourage, at least a few of them, to start working in this highly interdisciplinary and promising field, too.

Description / Table of Contents: Restoration of a sliding slope of an open-cast-mine could not be accomplished by drainage through vertical wells, because the strata present are very heterogeneous. These strata consist out of tills of Ester and Saale age. Slope movements were brought to a hold already five days after installation of a slightly bent about 400 m long horizontal drainage. Water level in the slope was lowered more than 8 meters within four weeks by gravitational drain only. This deep reaching drainage of the slope is achieved by a hydraulic short-cut established by the installation of an inclined borehole that intersects the slope. The borehole was drilled in a precise manner because of full directional propulsion control. The effective planment of the drainage well was proven by geophysical borehole logging. Compared to the use of pumped vertical wells, gravitational dewatering through the inclined well cuts down the operational costs extensively. Slope drainage water is fed into the dewatering system of the opencast mine without any pumping measures.
