    Notes: Abstract. Sequences from the two ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) were compared among five species of Fucus. Based on the present taxon sampling, parsimony analysis showed that Fucus serratus is the sister-group of the remaining Fucus species when Ascophyllum nodosum was used as an outgroup. The topology of the tree was (Fucus serratus (F. lutarius (F. vesiculosus (F. spiralis+F. ceranoides)))). The extremely low variation observed suggests a very recent radiation of the genus which supports the view widely accepted that the Fucales are among the most evolutionarily advanced of the brown algae. We further note that sequence differences between Fucus and Ascophyllum were 28%: this does not rule out the utility of ITS sequences within the Fucaceae. The very low number of informative positions allows to demonstrate empirically that distance matrix methods group on the basis of symplesiomorphies.

    Notes: Several parameters for serological tests on boar spermatozoa were studied, and a reliable technique was developed and employed. Using SLA (the MHC system in pig) genotyped boars, and specific reagents, SLA and Ia-like antigens were demonstrated on the sperm using both the cytotoxic and the absorption test. No SLA activity was detected in the seminal fluid.

    Notes: Summary High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is widely used in drug development and quality control. The main objective is to obtain dependable results in the shortest time in order to reduce the time taken to develop drugs and to ensure better quality of the final compound. High speed liquid chromatography (HSLC) helps us to reach this objective. In this paper pratical aspects of HSLC are discussed mainly in terms of instrument requirements and the practical needs of users. Comparison between HPLC and HSLC separations of pharmaceutical preparations are given and discussed. The contribution of HSLC to decrease solvent consumption and consequently analysis cost and its role in reducing environmental pollution, are also mentioned.

    Notes: Abstract  The ca. 10,500 years B.P. eruptions at Ruapehu volcano deposited 0.2–0.3 km3 of tephra on the flanks of Ruapehu and the surrounding ring plain and generated the only known pyroclastic flows from this volcano in the late Quaternary. Evidence of the eruptions is recorded in the stratigraphy of the volcanic ring plain and cone, where pyroclastic flow deposits and several lithologically similar tephra deposits are identified. These deposits are grouped into the newly defined Taurewa Formation and two members, Okupata Member (tephra-fall deposits) and Pourahu Member (pyroclastic flow deposits). These eruptions identify a brief (〈ca. 2000-year) but explosive period of volcanism at Ruapehu, which we define as the Taurewa Eruptive Episode. This Episode represents the largest event within Ruapehu's ca. 22,500-year eruptive history and also marks its culmination in activity ca. 10,000 years B.P. Following this episode, Ruapehu volcano entered a ca. 8000-year period of relative quiescence. We propose that the episode began with the eruption of small-volume pyroclastic flows triggered by a magma-mingling event. Flows from this event travelled down valleys east and west of Ruapehu onto the upper volcanic ring plain, where their distal remnants are preserved. The genesis of these deposits is inferred from the remanent magnetisation of pumice and lithic clasts. We envisage contemporaneous eruption and emplacement of distal pumice-rich tephras and proximal welded tuff deposits. The potential for generation of pyroclastic flows during plinian eruptions at Ruapehu has not been previously considered in hazard assessments at this volcano. Recognition of these events in the volcanological record is thus an important new factor in future risk assessments and mitigation of volcanic risk at Tongariro Volcanic Centre.

    Notes: Abstract The notothenioids are an Antarctic suborder of perciform fishes to which increasing interest is being devoted. To investigate their origin, one must address two questions. First, are Bovichtidae (Bovichtus, Cottoperca, Pseudaphritis), the sister-group of the rest of the suborder, monophyletic ? Secondly, what is the sister-group of the Notothenioidei ? These questions were addressed by determining the complete nucleotide sequence of the D2 and D8 domains of 28S rDNA (759 sites, among which 158 informative for parsimony), for 6 notothenioids and a collection of 6 outgroup taxa including the Trachinoidei and Zoarcoidei. Different outgroups (or combinations of outgroups) and different weighting schemes support the inference that Pseudaphritis is closer to the rest of the Notothenioidei than Cottoperca and Bovichtus are. Relationships of Cottoperca and Bovichtus remain unclear with respect to outgroups. Our molecular data therefore clearly show that the Bovichtidae are paraphyletic, but their relationships are not those suggested by Balushkin in 1992. Our data provide no indication of the monophyly of the Notothenioidei in its classical sense. Most of the homoplasy is due to outgroup sequences and interrelationships of outgroups are unresolved. Some morphological synapomorphies shared by Pseudaphritis and the rest of the non-bovichtid Notothenioidei are proposed, including some that were identified by Voskoboynikova in 1993.

    Notes: Abstract The Acipenseriformes (sturgeon and paddlefish)live in the Northern Hemisphere; half of thesespecies live in Europe, mostly in thePonto-Caspian region, one third in NorthAmerica, and the rest in East Asia and Siberia.They reproduce in freshwater and most of themmigrate to the sea, either living in brackishwater (Caspian, Azov, Black and Baltic Seas) orin full seawater on the oceanic continentalshelf. Most species feed on benthic organisms.Puberty usually occurs late in life (5–30 yearsof age) and adult males and females do notspawn on an annual basis. Adults continue togrow and some species such as the beluga (Huso huso) have reached 100 years of age andmore than 1,000 kg weight. Stocks of sturgeonsare dramatically decreasing, particularly inEurasia; the world sturgeon catch was nearly28,000 t in 1982 and less than 2,000 t by 1999.This decline resulted from overfishing andenvironmental degradation such as: accumulationof pollutants in sediments, damming of rivers,and restricting water flows, which becomeunfavorable to migration and reproduction.Several protective measures have beeninstituted; for example, fishing regulation,habitat restoration, juvenile stocking, and theCITES listing of all sturgeon productsincluding caviar. In addition, sturgeon farmingpresently yields more than 2,000 t per year(equivalent to wild sturgeon landings) andabout 15 t of caviar. Hopefully, thisartificial production will contribute to areduction of fishing pressure and lead to therehabilitation of wild stocks.

    Description: The cytoplasmic tyrosine kinase SRC controls cell growth, proliferation, adhesion, and motility. The current view is that SRC acts primarily downstream of cell-surface receptors to control intracellular signaling cascades. Here we reveal that SRC functions in cell-to-cell communication by controlling the biogenesis and the activity of exosomes. Exosomes are viral-like particles from endosomal origin that can reprogram recipient cells. By gain- and loss-of-function studies, we establish that SRC stimulates the secretion of exosomes having promigratory activity on endothelial cells and that syntenin is mandatory for SRC exosomal function. Mechanistically, SRC impacts on syndecan endocytosis and on syntenin–syndecan endosomal budding, upstream of ARF6 small GTPase and its effector phospholipase D2, directly phosphorylating the conserved juxtamembrane DEGSY motif of the syndecan cytosolic domain and syntenin tyrosine 46. Our study uncovers a function of SRC in cell–cell communication, supported by syntenin exosomes, which is likely to contribute to tumor–host interactions.
