    Notes: Amorphous alumina layers are deposited on a single crystal Si substrate by a e-gun evaporation technique. These films are then thermally annealed in oxygen to be crystallized and, further, irradiated with an excimer laser beam. At each stage of the film preparation, an x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis is performed at the film surface and in depth, upon ion beam grinding. Results give evidence for the formation of an aluminosilicate upon thermal annealing of the film in oxygen. At the surface itself, this compound is observed to decompose upon excimer laser irradiation at energy densities exceeding 1.75 J/cm2, giving rise to free Si atoms and SiO2, however with complete disappearance of Al atoms. Model photochemical reactions are proposed to explain such transformations. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Results of a study of laser-induced synthesis of ZnSe from a stack of elemental layers are presented. The process is traced by real-time, simultaneous measurement of both reflectivity and transmission of the irradiated thin films. Numerical solution of the thermal conductivity equation reveals that synthesis may develop at and above a well-defined threshold temperature, which is set by the melting of selenium. Further, it is shown that the whole process comprises three independent successive steps: interlayer mixing (or alloying), chemical reaction (i.e., formation of an amorphous compound), and crystallization of that compound. Among other findings, this analysis shows that large atom transport velocities (in mm/s) are necessary to account for the extremely short duration of the mixing step. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Results are presented on the processing of tin oxide films using an excimer laser. Commercially available films of SnO2 deposited on glass substrates were treated using a KrF excimer laser (248 nm). The results of these treatments were characterized by normal optical absorption, transmittance, and reflectance measurements in the VIS-NIR region along with x-ray diffraction and electrical conductivity measurements and a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) study. These were compared to the nontreated samples. The results inferred a relation between the amount of photoablated material with laser fluence, up to saturation. The optical spectroscopy results and the SEM study evidence modifications of the treated surface. On the other hand, the x-ray analysis indicates that the crystal structure is not altered by the laser treatment but the film morphology is. Furthermore, an increase of 15% and better in the normalized integrated optical transmittance in the visible region was obtained with this treatment, without changing the film electrical conductivity.

    Notes: CuTe thin films are synthesized onto glass substrates by scanning an Ar+ laser beam on vacuum deposited sandwich films of Cu and Te in 1:1 stoichiometric ratio. At a laser power greater than the threshold power for synthesis to occur, laser irradiation results in large synthesized areas (1 cm2) whose optical properties are demonstrated to be highly anisotropic, like CuTe, which is known to be birefringent and pleiochroic. It is demonstrated experimentally that the optical anisotropy of these laser-synthesized CuTe films depends on the wavelength, power, and polarization of the laser beam. The synthesized blade-like crystallites are preferentially oriented. It is argued that their preferential orientation is due to a combination of the high-energy gradient and the relative orientation of the laser beam polarization with respect to the scanning direction.
