    Notes: Abstract In this and a companion paper (Lane 1993), I describe a class of models, called artificial worlds (AWs), that are designed to give insight into a process called emergent hierarchical organization (EHO). This paper introduces the ideas of EHO and AWs and discusses some of the interferential problems involved in trying to learn about EHO by constructing and studying the properties of AWs. It concludes by introducing two abstract AWs that address important general problems in EHO: the relation between structure and function, and the dynamics of evolutionary processes. The companion paper will discuss several AWs expressly designed to model particular economic phenomena.

    Notes: Abstract This paper continues the discussion of artificial worlds (AWs) begun in Lane (1993b). Here, the focus is on two kinds of AWs. The first, classifier systems, can be used to represent agents that are capable of generating complex behaviors in response to intermittent rewards from an “environment” of which they are a part. A collection of such agents, engaging in “economic” interactions with one another, produces another kind of AW, in which such interesting aggregate behaviors as the formation of bubbles and crashes and technical trading in an artificial “stock market”, may arise. The second kind of AW considered in this paper is artificial economies. These AWs can provide a dynamic, nonequilibrium, microfounded account of such aggregate-level or macroeconomic phenomena as stable growth paths, business cycles, and Pareto firm-size distributions.

    Notes: Abstract In this essay, we argue that rational choice (RC) provides an inadequate foundation for a theory of economic action. After defining RC sufficiently broadly to encompass much of the bounded rationality literature as well as neoclassical optimization theory, we present three principal arguments against RC. The first is cognitive: economic actors are experts at what they do, and the cognitive processes that underlie experitise are not consistent with RC, descriptively, prescriptively or positively. The second argument begins with the observation that economic action takes place in and through relationships between agents, and these relationships may generate actions that connot be localized to individual agents. We argue that these generative relationships are essential to understanding such fundamental economic phenomena as innovation, and the actions that result from them are not amenable to analysis from a RC perspective. Finally, we argue that most economic agents lack the judgement and execution coherence required by RC. In a companion paper, we propose an alternative foundation for a theory of economic action that builds on the critique of RC presented in this paper.

    Notes: Abstract The immune response to F antigen by a variety of inbred strains and F1 hybrids has been studied. All of the mice responding to appropriate preparations of F antigen share ak allele atH-2K orI-A. In F1 hybrids, however, this permissive gene is sometimes expressed as dominant responsiveness, while in other combinations as dominant nonresponsiveness. There appears to be a hierarchy of responsiveness among the responder strains tested. Finally, some strains produce nonprecipitating antibodies against F antigen which may represent a genetically controlled restriction of the response to this antigen.

    Notes: Abstract The ability to produce an autoimmune response to F antigen in mice is underH-2-linked and non-H- 2-linkedIr-gene control. There is an absolute requirement for ak allele atH-2K orI-A in order to produce anti-F antibodies. Low and high responsiveness is controlled by a non-H-2-linkedIr gene which behaves in a similar fashion toIr-3, in that as the dose of F-antigen is lowered, low responders behave as high responders and vice versa. This conversion from low to high responsiveness also occurs within a month after ATX.— Most F1 hybrids derived from (responder x nonresponder) parents bearing identical F-types behave as dominant nonresponders. As a result of ATX, such F1 mice convert to high responders. This conversion occurs if the animals are not immunized before day 90. If they receive F antigen prior to that time, they remain nonresponders for 7–9 months. One F1 combination — AKD2 — behaves as a dominant high responder. Genetic analysis showed that in the presence of ak allele atH-2K orI-A, a non-H-2-linkedIr gene inherited from the AKR mice determined dominant responsivenss. No manipulation of the immune response or combination of genes converted nonresponders lacking ak allele into responders. Such complex genetic control suggests regulation by a number of independently segregating loci whose function it is to limit the autoimmune response to F antigen.
