Notes: Abstract Thermoluminescence data, obtained from majolica pottery after irradiation in the laboratory with gamma rays, were studied using the principal components technique to determine if the places of manufacture of this ceramic are differentiated one from another. A total of ten provenances in Holland, Spain and Italy was established by principal components. Six variables were used for the statistical analysis: the three glow-peaks positions, the relative intensity of the second peak to the first peak, the relative intensity of the third peak to the first peak, and the area under the glow curve. The precision for these parameters was about ± 5%, but the precision of the variables for a suite of standards was much higher. In addition, two groups of sherds collected in Latin America, and previously assigned to the provenances of Cataluna and Sevilla (Spain) by artistic criteria, were investigated in this study. All six samples of Cataluna agreed well with their previous assignment of provenance, but several of the samples assigned previously to Sevilla were not related unambiguously to this provenance, although they were with certainty excluded from other provenances.

Notes: Abstract Two sets of calibration standards for134Cs and137Cs were prepared by small serial dilution of a natural matrix standard reference material, IAEA-154 whey powder. The first set was intended to screen imported milk powders which were suspected to be contaminated with134Cs and137Cs. Therefore the concentration range of the calibration standards were about 40–400 Bq/kg. The precision of the preparation of the standard with about 7 Bq/kg of134Cs and 39 Bq/kg of137Cs at measurement time was 7.4% and 3.2%, respectively. The preparation of a similar standard by spiking the matrix with radioisotope solutions resulted in a poorer precision, about double that of the former technique. The other set of calibration standards was prepared to measure the environmental levels of137Cs in commercial Venezuelan milk powders. Their concentration ranged from 3–10 Bq/kg of137Cs. The accuracy of these calibration curves was checked by using IAEA-152 and A-14 milk powders. Their measured values were in good agreement with their certified values. Finally, it is shown that these preparation techniques by serial dilution of a standard reference material were simple, rapid, precise, accurate and cost-effective.

Notes: Summary A description of the preparation and certification of a second lateritic material (high in SiO2 content) from Venezuela is presented. The certification was based on the results from an intercomparison study of fourteen international laboratories after the bottled samples were considered to be homogeneous. The proposed values (the median) for the main constituents are: Al2O3: 27.03%; Fe2O3: 32.28%; SiO2: 20.24%; TiO2: 3.00% and LOI: 16.26%. The following statistical parameters are also given for each component: the mean, the range of values, the 95% confidence limits of the mean, the geometric mean, the variance, the standard deviation; the coefficient of variation, the standard error of the mean, the standard error of the standard deviation, the coefficient of skewness, the coefficient of kurtosis, the dominant cluster mode, the Gastwirth median, the median and its 95% confidence limits. Finally, the frequency distributions of the results for the various components are shown, which were discriminated by their analytical method.

Notes: Summary A description of the preparation and certification of a third lateritic material, a lateritic bauxite (high in Al2O3 content) from Suriname is presented. The certification was based on the results from an intercomparison run of eight different international laboratories by various analytical techniques after the bottled samples were considered to be homogeneous. The proposed values (the median) for the main constituents are: Al2O3: 45.50%; Fe2O3: 24.03%; SiO2: 1.93%; TiO2: 1.75% and LOI: 26.38%. The following statistical parameters are also given for each component: the mean, the range of values, the 95% confidence limits of the mean, the geometric mean, the variance, the standard deviation, the coefficient of variation, the standard error of the mean, the standard error of the standard deviation, the coefficient of skewness, the coefficient of kurtosis, dominant cluster mode, the Gastwirth median, the median and its 95% confidence limits. Notes: Abstract The description, sample preparation and evaluation of the data from an interlaboratory comparison study of a kaolinite reference material from Argentine is presented. The evaluation compared the mean, the geometric mean, the median, the Gastwirth median and dominant cluster mode parameters for assigning consensus values. The median values were SiO2: 47.68%, Al2O3: 35.25%, Fe2O3(T): 1.00%, MnO: 0.02%, MgO: 0.14%, CaO: 0.23%, Na2O: 0.09%, K2O: 1.21%, TiO2: 0.75%, P2O5: 0.08%, SO3: 0.09% and 12.48% for the LOI (loss on ignition). The following other statistical parameters were also given for each constituent: the number of values, the range of values, the 95% confidence limits for the median, the 95% confidence limits of the mean, the variance, the standard deviation, the coefficient of variation, the standard error of the mean, the standard error of the standard deviation, the coefficient of skewness and the coefficient of kurtosis. Finally, frequency distribution diagrams of values discriminating the different analytical techniques employed are presented and discussed.

Notes: Abstract The original purpose of this investigation started in 1996 was to study the radiological impact on the local population of the village of Chichiviriche de La Costa. But, soon after the major earthquake (Ms=6.8) in the state of Sucre on July 9, 1997, the objective was changed to study the fluctuation of radon (222Rn) to see if it could be correlated to seismic activity and/or if the amonlous change just before the earthquake can be considered a precusor for it. Measurements of222Rn by simply de-gassing about 250 ml of natural thermal water employing a Pylon AB-5 radiation monitor and counting the radiation after it reached equilibrium were performed. The values for four sampling periods in the first half of 1996 were about 17 Bq/l of222Rn, a month before the earthquake they were less than 15 Bq/l and increased about 70% to 25 Bq/l two days before the seismic event. In about two weeks, they returned to about 18 Bq/l. But, surprisingly, they have gradually increased to about 35 Bq/l, before leveling off at about 27 Bq/l.

Notes: Abstract In this study, we have investigated the fluctuations of radon levels in two experimental rooms constructed for secondary standard dosimetric calibration. The values over the short-term (the first two weeks) were in the range of 10–14 pCi/L of radon in air, while those of the long-term were between 6–14 pCi/L of radon. Even though the temperature and humidity was relatively constant during the second half of the rainy season, there was a trend towards lower radon values. It is concluded that ventilation is an important factor in indoor radon levels.

Notes: Abstract The determination of thirteen elements, eleven rare-earth elements (La, Ce, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Tm, Tb and Lu), thorium and uranium were performed by instrumental neutron activation analysis for four geological reference materials (G-2, AGV-1, GSP-1 and SY-2) as well as our laboratory rare-earth standard. The analyses were performed using a low energy photon detector coupled to an Apple IIe microprocessor employed as a multichannel analyzer not only to collect the data but also for data analysis. Finally, based on this work we have proposed a simple, rapid routine method for the determination of eleven rare-earth elements, thorium and uranium in geological materials employing IVIC's RV-1 nuclear reactor.

Notes: Abstract The activity of137Cs was determined in mosses and their surrounding soils in three Venezuelan cloud forests. The concentration of137Cs in both the mosses and their respective soils were correlated with elevation (m.a.s.l.). This relationship was the result of the cloud forest effect, no direct deposition by condensation below the base of the clouds and increasing deposition of137Cs with the density of the clouds. The ratio of the activity of137Cs in the mosses to their surrounding soils was in general the same for sites near the top of the mountains, but the ratio at the Altos de pipe location was 3.5 times higher than that of the La Sierra mountain. This was explained by the difference in the water content of the surface and the top soil layer. It was concluded that the137Cs measured in the mosses was from the soil effect rather than new deposition of137Cs in the last three years.
