Notes: Abstract After solution treatment and quenching a fast increase in hardness takes place in Al-Zn-Mg alloys in the first few minutes of ageing at or near room temperature. The kinetics of this process have been studied on a number of different compostition alloys by microhardness measurements between 246 and 295 K and by resistivity measurements between 263 and 323 K. On the basis of the observed microhardness and resistivity kinetics the activation energy of the process was determined. According to this the ageing process starts with the diffusion of zinc atoms to magnesium atoms and Guinier-Preston zones develop from the so formed Mg-Zn clusters. The average Mg/Zn ratio in the clusters is 1/4. In the alloys investigated the microhardness after 15 min ageing at room temperature can be composed simply of the contributions to the hardness of pure aluminium, MgZn4 clusters and of magnesium atoms remaining in solid solution.

Notes: Abstract The precipitation of cobalt and silicon atoms from supersaturated solid solutions of Cu-Co-Si alloys was studied during ageing between 400 and 600° C by electrical resistivity, thermoelectric power and calorimetric measurements, by mechanical testing and by transmission electron microscopy investigations. It has been found that the decomposition begins with the appearance of concentration fluctuations from which cobalt precipitates first. The clustering of cobalt atoms initiates the precipitation of silicon, and so particles with the stoichiometric Co2Si composition are finally formed. The silicon that is in excess with respect to the stoichiometry of Co2Si is retained in the solid solution but its increase in the initial supersaturated solid solution strongly enhances the nucleation of the particles and, therefore, results in a finer precipitate structure. On the basis of calorimetric measurements the effective activation energy of both the cobalt and silicon precipitation was determined to be around 1.5 eV.

Notes: Abstract The decomposition processes taking place in the Al-4.5 at % Zn-2 to 3 at % Mg alloys were studied during continuous heating by means of electrical resistivity, XSAS and DSC measurements and by TEM investigations. It was found that the room temperature pre-ageing has no significant influence on the processes taking place above 230° C. Several temperature ranges were determined in which the decomposition of the solid solution and/or the transformation of the different particles of the second phases take place by different mechanisms.

Notes: Abstract The influence of Mg concentrations on the dissolution of Guinier-Preston (GP) zones formed at room temperature (RT) and on the formation of more stable phases has been investigated during continuous heating of Al-4.5 at % Zn-xMg alloys. The Mg content was varied from 0.05 to 3 at %. After different aging periods at RT, calorimetric investigations were carried out at heating rates of 40 and 80° C min−1. In the case of alloys with a lower Mg content (x ⩽ 0.5 at %) only the dissolution of GP zones could be observed during the heating, whereas in the case of alloys with a higher Mg content the formation of theη′-phase started before the total dissolution of GP zones and at higher temperatures the formation of theη-phase also took place. These phases were identified by transmission electron microscopy. The heat-of-solution of GP zones shows saturation as a function of RT aging time. The time needed for the saturation increased monotonously with increasing Mg content. The reversion of zones was followed byin situ X-ray small angle scattering measurements. The change of the total scattered intensity was measured during continuous heating at a rate of 40° C min−1. These investigations have confirmed the results of the calorimetric measurements which indicate that the total dissolution of zones takes place only in the case of the alloys with a Mg content lower than 0.5 at %. In the case of alloys with a Zn concentration of 4.5 at % studied here, 1 at % Mg is sufficient to initiate the formation of more stable phases during the reversion of zones.

Notes: Abstract The mechanical properties of an internally oxidized Cu-Co-Si alloy of wire form was studied by torsional deformation. It is found that as a result of the internal oxidation the ageing heat-treatments lead to the formation of regions with cylindrical symmetry which have significantly different mechanical properties.

Notes: Abstract The decomposition of the supersaturated solid solution of an Al-3.2wt% Zn-2.2 wt% Mg alloy has been investigated in the temperature of 20 to 200° C, by small-angle X-ray scattering, electrical resistivity and mechanical measurements. On the basis of the results obtained, three subsequent stages of the decomposition process can be distinguished. Between 20 and 70° the basic process is the nucleation and growth of G.P. zones, the volume fraction of which increases logarithmically with time. A transition stage is observed between 80 and 100° in which the volume fraction increases linearly with time. Above 90° C, the growth kinetics of the volume fraction shows a definite incubation period at the beginning of ageing, while the yield stress increases monotonically. In the temperature range 100 to 160° C, the formation of theη′ phase takes place. Below 100° a linear connection between the yield stress and (fR)1/2 is found from which the specific surface energy to cut a G.P. zone is calculated to be Γ0= 0.21 Nm m−2.

Notes: Abstract 〈100〉 textured Cu-0.64 at % Co-0.48 at % Si alloy wires were studied by simultaneous torsion and extension as well as by metallographic and X-ray investigations. The yield function due to the 〈100〉 texture was computed for the case of simultaneous torsion and extension. The computed yield function is in good agreement with the experimental results.

Notes: Abstract This review surveys the present knowledge of the mechanisms of decomposition processes in Al-Zn-Mg alloys. The various experimental observations connected with the formation and properties of the different second phase particles are described and critically analysed. The effect of different heat treatments, compositions, impurities, etc on the different stages of the decomposition process is discussed in detail.
