    Notes: Abstract Analysis of continuous culture methodology suggests that this potentially powerful tool for kinetic analysis can be improved by minimizing several inherent shortcomings. Medium background substrates — organic carbon, phosphate, and manganese — were shown to dominate kinetic observations at concentrations below chemical detection methods. Reactor wall growth, culture size distribution changes, sample removal-induced steady state perturbations, and limiting substrate leakage from organisms are treated in terms of kinetic measurement errors. Large variations in maximal growth rates and substrate uptake rates found are attributed to experimental protocol-induced transient states. Relationships are presented for correcting limiting substrate concentrations for lability during sampling, contamination with unreacted medium, and background substrate effects. Analytical procedures are discussed for improved measurement of limiting substrate kinetics involving enzymes, isotopes, and material balance manipulation. Relaxation methods as applied to continuous culture are introduced as a means for isolating separate rate constants describing net substrate transport and for evaluating cellular metabolite leakage. Low velocity growth, multiple substrate metabolism, and endogenous metabolism are discussed along with measurements showing that 1-month generation times for aquatic microorganisms can be quite normal and that the kinetics are compatible withμg/liter limiting substrate concentrations. The concept of regarding growth kinetics as the sum of several net accumulation processes is suggested.

    Notes: In addition to using the now widely recognised technique of simultaneously acquiring deep reflection profiles at sea and long-range refraction profiles using three-component land stations, the BABEL seismic experiment also recorded P- and S-wave energy from the large airgun array at four linear 38-component land spreads. The pioneering nature of this work led, in hindsight, to several deficiences in design, but also pointed the way towards substantial advances in analysis and interpretation of integrated seismic observations. The multifold nature of the recordings at offsets providing pre-critical reflections from Moho depths resulted in interleaved receiver gathers with trace spacings of 4–5 m, thus providing some of the most densely spaced deep-seismic wide-angle sections to date. With such a trace density, the signal-to-noise ratio was substantially increased by summation of adjacent traces, without degrading spatial resolution. Stacking the land array data using conventional common midpoint (CMP) gather techniques over source-receiver offsets of 7–78 km doubled the depth range constrained by numerically precise stacking velocity analysis. Offsets 〉 10 km provide normal moveouts 〉 1 s, although the 1.5 km of differential moveout available here limited velocity discrimination and required additional constraints to define zero-offset traveltimes. For one array, stacking velocity errors of ±200 m s−1 imposed a resulting error in zero-offset time of up to ±400 ms without use of any marine data. With receiver response functions matched, stacked sections using data from geophone arrays exhibit similar features to stacks made using hydrophone arrays at 0–3 km offsets in the same area, but also significant differences. The differences in reflection amplitudes cannot be simply attributed to theoretical amplitude-offset variations and probably represent variation in the reflectivity of the crustal rocks of the Baltic shield.

    Notes: A study was conducted to investigate fluctuations in different physical and chemical parameters, and bacterial populations in a tropical marine cage culture farm for one annual cycle. Samples were collected from the centre of the farm (station 1) and away from the cages (station 2). There were no significant differences (P 〉 0.05) in water quality parameters, such as temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and pH between the two stations during the neap and spring tides. Nutrient concentrations and bacterial counts were slightly higher at station 1 than station 2, but the differences were not significant (P 〉 0.05). In general, nutrients and chlorophyll a concentrations in the study area were higher than those reported in the pristine marine environment. There were significant correlations (P 〈 0.05) between some nutrients (soluble reactive phosphorus, nitrite and nitrate) and bacterial counts. There were no significant differences P 〉 0.05) in nutrient levels and bacterial populations between the neap and spring tides, probably because of the large number of farms operating in the shallow channel. The present study indicates that high organic loading from the fish farming activities could cause deterioration of the water quality in the cage-culture system as well as in the surrounding environment.

    Notes: Twelve pelleted diets containing a range of protein and energy levels from 30% protein, 400 kcal gross energy per 100 g diet to 40% protein and 520 kcal gross energy per 100 g diet were formulated. A least-cost linear programming package was applied to determine the optimum inclusion levels of some locally available ingredients. The essential amino acid constraints applied to the diets were based on the essential amino acid content of the eggs of broodstock Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man). The study was undertaken using 13 one-tonne capacity fibreglass tanks, each with a water recycling system. Each tank was partitioned into three equal compartments by nylon netting; each compartment was stocked with six female and one male prawn which were fed with the various diets at 2% body weight daily split into three feedings at 0800, 1200 and 1800 h. The results indicated that prawn fed the 40% protein diet with an energy level of 400 kcal per 100 g diet attained the highest fecundity, producing 1355 eggs per gram body weight, followed by those fed P40 with a gross energy level of 440 kcal 100 g-1 (1354 eggs per gram body weight), and prawns fed control diet (30% protein with an energy level of 442 kcal 100 g diet-1) attained the lowest fecundity (1080 eggs per gram body weight). However, statistically, no significant differences in fecundity were observed among prawn fed 35% protein diet with an energy level of 473 kcal 100 g-1, 40 with energy levels of 400 or 440 kcal 100 g diet-1. The essential amino acids index (EAAI) were calculated and were found to be a possible method of evaluating the broodstock diet of M. rosenbergii as a higher index indicates higher egg production. Therefore, a diet containing 40% protein, with an energy level of 400 kcal 100 g diet-1 is recommended as a broodstock feed for M. rosenbergii in view of its superior performance and cost.
