    Notes: The chemical structure of an aliphatic epoxy resin was studied by using gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), FTIR-TGA (thermogravimetric analysis), mass spectrometry in fast atom bombardment (FAB) mode, and wet analysis. We found that when trimethylolpropane is used as starting monomer, only two OH groups are epoxidized. The resin and its different fractions have a functionality of two. Under the conditions of synthesis used by the supplier, three main products were found with masses of 246,339, and 430. No trifunctional product was detected. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: A study of cure of an epoxy resin based on trimethilolpropane (TMP) used as supplied and in purified form and m-xylylenediamine (m-XDA), as curing agent has been carried out. Thermodynamic functions such as activation energy, activation entropy, activation enthalpy, and free energy of activation were determinated. From kinetic study we have observed that there are two competitive mechanisms; autocatalyzed and n order, with the values of activation energy ranging between 52.9 and 64.6 kJ/mol. The overall order of reaction is found to be 2.5, and the order of reaction with respect to the hydroxyl group is clearly determined and equal to 1. Gelation study was carried out under two conditions: isothermal and adiabatic. From isothermal study we obtained the values of functionality of the resins (approximately two) and the apparent activation energy of the process. The adiabatic study allowed us the determination of the pot-life taking into account the theoretical model used, with reasonable theoretical/experimental agreements. The importance of n-order path for this kind of resins (with high OH contents) is well demonstrated through kinetic and thermodynamic parameters. The thermodynamic functions showed themselves as very sensitive parameters for the following and evolution of the reaction. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Description: Abstract Mitigation of climate change depends on accurate estimation and mapping of terrestrial carbon stocks, particularly in carbon dense tropical forests. Allometric equations can be used to robustly estimate biomass of tropical trees, but often require tree height which is frequently unknown. Researchers and practitioners must, therefore, decide whether to directly measure a subset of tree heights to develop diameter:height (D:H) equations or rely on previously published generic equations. To date, studies comparing the the two approaches have been spatially restricted and/or not randomly allocated across the landscape of interest, making the implications of deciding whether or not to measure tree heights difficult to determine. To address this issue, we use inventory data from a systematic‐random forest inventory across Gabon (102 forest sites; 42,627 trees, including 7036 height‐measured trees). Using plot‐specific models of D:H as a benchmark, we compare the performance of a suite of locally‐fitted and commonly used generic models (parameterized national, georegional and pantropical equations) across a variety of scales, and assess which abiotic, anthropogenic and topographical covariates contribute the most to bias in height estimation. We reveal marked spatial structure in the magnitude and direction of bias in tree height estimation using all generic models, due at least in part to soil type, which compounded to substantial error in site‐level AGB estimates (of up to 38% or 150 Mg ha−1). However, two generic pantropical models (Chave 2014 and Feldpaush 2012) converged to within 2.5% of mean AGB at the landscape scale. Our results suggest that some (not all) pantropical equations can extrapolate AGB across large spatial scales with minimal bias in estimated mean AGB. However, extreme caution must be taken when interpreting the AGB estimates from generic models at the site‐level as they fail to capture substantial spatial variation in D:H relationships, which could lead to dramatic under or over‐estimation of site‐level carbon stocks. Validated allometric models derived at site‐ or soil type‐levels may be the best way to reduce such biases arising from landscape‐level heterogeneity in D:H model fit in the afrotropics.     Description: Extracellular signals often result in simultaneous activation of both the Raf-MEK-ERK and PI3K-Akt pathways (where ERK is extracellular-regulated kinase, MEK is mitogen-activated protein kinase or ERK kinase, and PI3K is phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase). However, these two signaling pathways were shown to exert opposing effects on muscle cell hypertrophy. Furthermore, the PI3K-Akt pathway was shown to inhibit the Raf-MEK-ERK pathway; this cross-regulation depended on the differentiation state of the cell: Akt activation inhibited the Raf-MEK-ERK pathway in differentiated myotubes, but not in their myoblast precursors.     Description: Skeletal muscle adapts to decreases in activity and load by undergoing atrophy. To identify candidate molecular mediators of muscle atrophy, we performed transcript profiling. Although many genes were up-regulated in a single rat model of atrophy, only a small subset was universal in all atrophy models. Two of these genes encode ubiquitin ligases: Muscle RING Finger 1 (MuRF1), and a gene we designate Muscle Atrophy F-box (MAFbx), the latter being a member of the SCF family of E3 ubiquitin ligases. Overexpression of MAFbx in myotubes produced atrophy, whereas mice deficient in either MAFbx or MuRF1 were found to be resistant to atrophy.     Description: Widespread evidence for human occupation of the Atacama Desert, 20 degrees to 25 degrees S in northern Chile, has been found from 13,000 calibrated 14C years before the present (cal yr B.P.) to 9500 cal yr B.P., and again after 4500 cal yr B.P. Initial human occupation coincided with a change from very dry environments to humid environments. More than 39 open early Archaic campsites at elevations above 3600 meters show that hunters lived around late glacial/early Holocene paleolakes on the Altiplano. Cessation of the use of the sites between 9500 and 4500 cal yr B.P. is associated with drying of the lakes. The mid-Holocene collapse of human occupation is also recorded in cave deposits. One cave contained Pleistocene fauna associated with human artifacts.     Description: Background: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between coaches’ interpersonal style and fear of failure in athletes. Methods: A sample of 340 athletes at the Federation Level with a mean age of 18.96 years (SD = 5.69 years.) comprised the sample. Athletes completed questionnaires related to fear of failure in sports as well as their perceptions of the extent to which their coaches provided support for athlete autonomy and control. Results: The results revealed a significant and positive relationship between coaches’ controlling style and athletes’ fear of failure whereas coach autonomy support was associated with reduced fear of failure. Through the use of cluster analysis, two athlete profiles emerged. One profile indicated moderate levels of fear of failure among those athletes who perceived a controlling coaching style. The second profile revealed a cluster of athletes with low levels of fear of failure and favorable perceptions of coach support for athlete autonomy. Conclusions: These findings provide further evidence for the role of coaches as social influences capable of contributing to both adaptive and maladaptive psychological outcomes for athletes in sports.
