Notes: The differential and total cross sections are evaluated for 1 1S–2 1S excitation of helium atom by electron impact in distorted wave approximation. The effect of the distortion of incident electron, contribution due to polarization of target and the exchange effect are appropriately taken in both the initial and final channels. Fourier decomposition of interaction potential between the projectile and target is taken and an accurate form factor has been used to calculate the transition matrix. The present results are compared with various distorted wave models as well as other theoretical and experimental results.

Notes: Explores the extent to which the construct service quality plays in an internal marketing setting. A conceptual model known as the "Internal Service Quality Model" was designed based on the original "GAP Model" developed by Parasuraman. The model evaluated the dimensions, and their relationships, that determine service quality among internal customers (front-line staff) and internal suppliers (support staff) within a large service organisation, namely, Singapore Airlines. The dependent variable in this study was internal service quality (ISQ), while the independent variables were tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The results suggest that the perceptions and expectations of internal customers and internal suppliers play a major role in recognising the level of internal service quality perceived. The acceptance of the postulated hypotheses has confirmed the importance of the internal service quality construct, thus acknowledging the usefulness of the INTSERVQUAL instrument and the conceptualised Internal Service Quality Model proposed in this research study.

Notes: Channel optical waveguides have been formed on both GaAs and InP substrates utilizing deuterium passivation of the surface to provide planar confinement and etching to provide lateral confinement. Design criteria were established for obtaining single mode channel waveguides for the present case of small index changes and thick surface layers associated with deuterium passivation. Planar and channel waveguide operations were demonstrated and channel waveguide propagation losses have been measured. For GaAs channel waveguides, optical loss was measured as a function of channel waveguide width, ranging from 3 to 9 μm, with a minimum loss found for a width of 6.0 μm. Channel waveguide losses as low as 12.7 dB/cm for GaAs and 6.0 dB/cm for InP have been measured at λ=1.3 μm. For InP this loss value is close to the limiting value imposed by free carrier absorption in the semiconductor region below the passivated region. Since the waveguide loss due to free carriers can be reduced by increasing waveguide confinement, we anticipate that lower loss optical channel waveguides could be formed by this technique. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Over the past decade, SERVQUAL has emerged as perhaps the most popular standardized questionnaire to measure service quality. In this study, a conceptual model, INTSERVQUAL, was designed based on the original "Gap Model", to explore the extent to which the construct service quality plays in an internal marketing setting. The research was conducted in a major international airline. The expectations and perceptions scales have emerged as measures with excellent internal consistency reliabilities. The two scales exhibited adequate validity as separate measures of front-line staff (customer-contact personnel) expectations of support services; and their perceptions of the support staff's performance. The results indicated that the scales can be successfully used to assess the magnitude of the gap between front-line staff perceptions and expectations.

Notes: Abstract Multiple residues of organochlorine insecticides were monitored in Ganga river water in the district of Farrukhabad in northern Indian for one year (1991–1992). Almost all the samples were found to be contaminated with residues of HCH and DDT. Residues of aldrin, endosulfan and heptachlor were also detected in a larger number of samples. Alpha-HCH, pp′-DDT and alpha-endosulfan were found to dominate over the other isomers of HCH, DDT and endosulfan, respectively. Enhanced percentage of beta-HCH suggests accumulation of this isomer in the aquatic environment. The average concentration of aldrin was more than that of dieldrin. Aldrin residues often exceeded the WHO guideline value for drinking water and the concentration of heptachlor occasionally exceeded the specified limits.

Notes: Abstract Residues of several organochlorine insecticides were monitored in the ground water from a rural area near Farrukhabad in the vicinity of the Ganga River in northern India for one year (1991–1992). Almost all the samples were found to be contaminated with residues of Hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and Dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT). Residues of Aldrin, endosulfan and heptachlor were also detected in a large number of samples. The concentrations of aldrin residues greatly exceeded the WHO guideline value for drinking water, concentrations of heptachlor and DDT residues also occasionally exceeded the specified limits. Migration of pollutants through ground water recharge with polluted Ganga River water and monsoon rains carrying undergraded residues downwards from the soil surface are throught to be important sources of insecticide contamination of ground water in the region.

Notes: Abstract Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) seed lectin, PNA is widely used to identify tumor specific antigen (T-antigen), Galβ1-3GalNAc on the eukaryotic cell surface. The functional amino acid coding region of a cDNA clone, pBSH-PN was PCR amplified and cloned downstream of the polyhedrin promoter in the Autographa californica nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcNPV) based transfer vector pVL1393. Co-transfection of Spodoptera frugiperda cells (Sf9) with the transfer vector, pAcPNA and AcRP6 (a recombinant AcNPV having B-gal downstream of the polyhedrin promoter) DNAs produced a recombinant virus, AcPNA which expresses PNA. Infection of suspension culture of Sf9 cells with plaque purified AcPNA produced as much as 9.8 mg PNA per liter (2.0 × 106 cells/ml) of serum-free medium. Intracellularly expressed protein (re-PNA) was purified to apparent homogeneity by affinity chromatography using ECD-Sepharose. Polyclonal antibodies against natural PNA (n-PNA) cross-reacted with re-PNA. The subunit molecular weight (30kDa), hemagglutination activity, and carbohydrate specificity of re-PNA were found to be identical to that of n-PNA, thus confirming the abundant production of a functionally active protein in the baculovirus expression system.

Notes: The elastic, inelastic, and total intensities for x-ray and high-energy electron scattering from the 10-electron systems Ne, HF, H2O, NH3, and CH4 have been calculated by using SCF-MO wave functions obtained with double-zeta quality bases of Gaussian contractd wave functions. The effect of molecular binding and various other trends and systematics in the intensities have been examined with the help of difference functions computed between the present scattering intensities and those for the indpendent atom model (IAM).

Notes: Photoacoustic (PA) spectra of Ho3+, Er3+, and Sm3+ doped PVA films were obtained in 350-800 nm range. PA spectra were also obtained for the respective dopant oxides: Ho2O3, Er2O3, and Sm2O3 for comparison. It was found that in PVA the PA sensitivity has increased considerably compared to pure rare earth oxides. The relative intensities of absorption bands at 540 and 637 nm of Ho3+: PVA have shown distinct enhancement, indicating the increase in nonradiative relaxation at these excitations. Furthermore, the PA signals at wavelengths for different PA absorption bands were monitored as a function of chopping frequency. These experiments have shown that PA signal varies w-1 both for oxides and PVA samples, suggesting that they behave as thermally thin samples. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
