    Notes: Two superstructures of the TTB type (tetragonal tungsten bronze) exist in the system Nb2O5/WO3. They are caused by an ordered arrangement of pentagonal tunnels filled with metal–oxygen strings. Besides the well known 4:9 phase (Nb8W9O47), which has a tripled b axis, evidence for a new orthorhombic structure, Nb6W8O39 (a = b = 27.3 Å), has been found. The oxidation products of Nb7W10O47 and Nb4W13O47 frequently comprise less-ordered arrangements of filled tunnels, causing diffuse scattering. In Nb7W10O47.5 the electron diffraction patterns (along [001]) of many crystal fragments show circular diffuse scattering, which appears around the main reflections of the TTB substructure with two distinct radii (r*). r* \simeq 0.33a* indicates the predominance of 4:9-type domains, whereas r* \simeq 0.41a* corresponds to Nb6W8O39. In Nb4W13O49 the diffuse scattering pattern is cross-shaped; this is due to the presence of long slabs of diamond-linked pentagonal columns. Structure models for these particular states of order have been derived from high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. Some general principles for the formation of the different arrangements are deduced. Apparently, two distinct types of link between the filled pentagonal tunnels are important features which lead to the stability of these structures.

    Notes: The intergrowth structure of a zirconium niobium tungsten oxide has been determined by transmission electron microscopy methods. Electron diffraction patterns reveal the parameters of the monoclinic lattice: a = 19.0, b = 3.9 and c = 13.8 Å; β = 93.5°. Additional reflections in higher-order Laue zones indicate the presence of a diagonal glide plane, leading to a larger unit cell. A structure model of composition ZrnNb8−2nW12+nO56 (0.5 〈 n 〈 1) has been derived from high-resolution lattice images. Alternating slabs of ReO3-type and of tetragonal tungsten bronze structure are intergrown coherently. Two five-membered rings of MO6 octahedra belonging to adjacent tetragonal tungsten bronze subcells are connected by having two octahedra in common. For the first time, this arrangement of double pentagons is observed in a regular structure.

    Description / Table of Contents: Preparation and Electronmicroscopical Investigation of Monoclinic (Zn,Nb)12O29 and (Mg,Nb)12O29Different chlorinating transport agents were tried for the chemical transport of Zn2/3Nb11 1/3O29 and Mg2/3Nb11 1/3O29. With NH4Cl we succeeded in getting solid solutions of M2/3Nb11 1/3O29 (M = Zn or Mg) and Nb12O29. Only Mg2/3Nb11 1/3O29 could be deposited as a pure phase using HgCl2 as transport agent. The investigation of the transport products with a transmission electron microscope confirmed the expected structure of edge sharing [3×4] blocks like Nb12O29. Nevertheless many different defective crystal areas were observed.
    Notes: Verschiedene chlorierende Transportmittel wurden für den chemischen Transport von Zn2/3Nb11 1/3O29 und Mg2/3Nb11 1/3O29 erprobt. Mit NH4Cl gelang es, Mischkristalle von M2/3Nb11 1/3O29 (mit M = Zn oder Mg) und Nb12O29 zu erhalten. Phasenrein ließ sich nur Mg2/3Nb11 1/3O29 mit dem Transportmittel HgCl2 abscheiden. Die Untersuchung der Transportprodukte mit dem Transmissionselektronenmikroskop bestätigte den Aufbau aus kantenverknüpften [3×4]-Blöcken wie bei Nb12O29. In vielen Kristallbereichen wurde allerdings eine unterschiedliche Fehlordnung beobachtet.

Preparation and Transmission Electronmicroscopical Investigation of (Cu, Nb)12O29 and (Cu, Nb)15O37With gaseous HgCl2 the compound CuNb2O6 decomposes and Nb2O5 is formed, if the reaction products CuCl and CuO can migrate in a gradient of temperature (1 000 → 900°C) to the colder end of a closed ampoule. By breaking off the decomposition (Cu, Nb)12O29 and (Cu, Nb)15O37 were isolated as metastable intermediate products. The results of the high resolution transmission electronmicroscopical investigations show that the new oxides are built of edgesharing [3 × 4] and [3 × 5] blocks, respectively, in a monoclinical arrangement and are members of the structure family M3nO8n-3 (n = 4 and 5, respectively). The real structures showed different defects; during the investigation of a crystal an unusual in-situ reaction caused by the electron beam had been observed.
    Notes: Unter Einwirkung von gasförmigen HgCl2 geht CuNb2O6 in Nb2O5 über wenn die Reaktionsprodukte CuCl und CuO im Temperaturgefälle (z. B. 1 000 → 900°C) an das kältere Ende einer geschlossenen Ampulle wandern können. Durch Abbrechen des Abbauvorganges ließen sich (Cu, Nb)12O29 und (Cu, Nb)15O37 als metastabile Zwischenprodukte erhalten. Nach dem Ergebnis der hochauflösenden Durchstrahlungs-Elektronenmikroskopie sind die neuen Oxide aus kantenverknüpften [3 × 4]- bzw. [3 × 5]-Blöcken in monokliner Anordnung aufgebaut und damit als Mitglieder der Strukturfamilie M3nO8n-3 (n = 4 bzw. 5) anzusehen. Die Realstrukturen zeigten eine unterschiedliche Fehlordnung; während der Untersuchung wurde bei einem Kristall eine ungewöhnliche in-situ-Reaktion durch Einwirkung des Elektronenstrahls beobachtet.

X-Ray Structure Analysis and Electronmicroscopical Investigation of MnxNb6(O, F)16The structure of MnxNb6(O, F)16, which is concerning the network of the Nb-X-Polyhedrons (X = O, F) isostructural with LiNb6O15F, was refined to give R = 7.2% and Rw = 2.96%. The resulting formula for the investigated crystal was Mn0.17Nb6O14.34F1.66. Only one of the two possible sites in the canals of the structure is occupied by Mn. The investigation with high resolution electron microscopy yielded pictures which indicate the pentagonal columns as dark contrasts.
    Notes: Die Strukturparameter des Mangannioboxidfluorids MnxNb6(O, F)16, das hinsichtlich des Nb-X-Polyedergerüstes (X = O, F) mit LiNb6O15F isotyp ist, wurden bis zu R = 7,2% bzw. Rw = 2,96% verfeinert. Die Zusammensetzung des untersuchten Kristalls ergab sich zu Mn0,17Nb14,34F1,66. Nur eine der beiden möglichen Lagen in den Kanälen der Struktur ist mit Mn besetzt. Die elektronenmikroskopische Untersuchung ergab hochaufgelöste Abbildungen, die die Nb-X-Polyeder als dunkle Kontraste in der Projektion längs [010] erkennen lassen.
